CentOS 5 Networking :: Dell Studio XPS 435 MT - "network" Doesn't Appear Anywhere In The Dmesg Output
Jun 9, 2009
I just installed CentOS 5.2 on a Dell Studio XPS 435 MT, which is a fairly new machine (Intel Core i7) and I'm having trouble getting networking working. The word "network" doesn't appear anywhere in the dmesg output, so I can't even tell what hardware my machine has, or what drivers are missing. How do I tackle this?

Occaisonally I use 'dmesg' to see what's happening with my system. Lately I've noticed something that I've never seen before: the output from dmesg is polluted with logs of network packets. At the moment, the output of 'dmesg' looks like this:
Code:
[312682.369635] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:1e:8c:25:b8:a2:00:14:7f:ff:5d:00:08:00 SRC=58.28.25.10 DST=192.168.1.71 LEN=40 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=60 ID=0 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=80
[Code]...
How can I make dmesg useful to me again?

I have a Dell Inspiron E4300 provided to me by my employer. I have installed CentOS 5 without much of a problem. The only issue is the wifi isn't working (doh!). I've had much experience with this kind of thing in the past (FreeBSD/ndiswrapper) with successes.
Here are some details:

The device does not appear in dmesg :(I have installed ndiswrapper (dkms-ndiswrapper and ndisgtk from RPMForge) and provided it with the correct Windows XP driver. It has installed the driver and ndisgtk tells me that the hardware is present.

ISSUE SOLVED: FOUND SOLUTION ON LINUX MINT COMMUNITY[URL]... The solution is for debian, but it worked for me on Kubuntu 11.04. I just installed Kubuntu, and my wireless is not getting detected. I tried a variety of solutions I found online, but none worked. It worked perfectly for Ubuntu Gnome.
When I tried installing the Broadcom drivers in the "Additional Drivers", I got an error that the driver could not be installed.

I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with Centos 5.4 installed. I am having an issue where there is no network activity on any of the NIC's.(Broadcom and Intel).
I have read that this might be somewhat common but have not found any solutions. I am unable to ping anything internal or external. Has anyone encountered this problem and have a potential fix?

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640. The wireless card is a Broadcom Corporation Device 4353, and I'm using the Broadcom STA driver suggested in System>Administration>Hardware Drivers. Every couple of minutes, it disconnects from my network and then it spends several minutes reconnecting and gives me the "Authentication required by wireless network" prompt several times. The problem only exists in Lucid: it goes away when I use a Karmic live CD, and a similar XPS computer with perfect wireless performance in Karmic has the same problem when I run Lucid on that one. Aside from downgrading to Karmic, how can I fix this?

I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

I have enabled usb storage debug prints for the debugging of my driver in kernel 2.6.24.4 of Fedora 8. When I type dmesg and press enter I see many prints on the screen. There are however lot many prints and I want all those prints from the beginning. However it seems that the older prints are overwritten with newer prints. SO if just redirect the dmesg output to some file, I get only newest prints but older are lost.
Surprisingly /var/log/messages doesn't contain those prints! Also I see there is a file named /var/log/dmesg , but that files never gets updated with the prints I see on the screen. So, my question is can I get all those dmesg prints right from the beginning in a file somewhere?

OpenSuSE 11.3/KDE4 32-bit
Kernel 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop
It's been a while but I just hit a brick wall. Well, this has been building for a week or so, I can't figure out what's causing it. I thought there was a sudden conflich with the bluetooth dongle, since that one piece of hardware is not listed right from boot (sometimes has a dmesg error related to loading the module), but I find now this is not the case. Today I ran the full update to the current kernel hoping to fix the problem, but to no avail (caused some interesting issued with the video (intel 945) which I ironed out). Symptom: With the exception of the bluetooth, all devices hooked up to the USB ports at boot are recognized and usable. No device that I plug in after booting is recognized, period. lsusb output does not change. Plugging in a USB flash drive produces no output for dmesg.

have a Dell Studio 540 and am currently running Fedora 14 x64 KDE version. All seems to work well except I have no sound. Support.dell.com tells me my sound card needs a RealTek driver as well as ALC888 HD driver. Now I don't use the HD integrated sound (back), so I am assuming it's the Analog sound hardware (that I plug my headphones in on the front of the machine). Not sure if that is clear or not, or maybe will have no relation whatsoever how ever I have no sound. I have installed other distros and sound works, but I would really like to use Fedora.

I have not used Linux in some time (I used to use it back when suse 8 was still out and mandrake linux was still around).
Recently I decided to give it another go and downloaded both the LiveCD and the DVD (both 64-bit versions AND 32-bit versions).
I have a Dell Studio 1747 Laptop (with the 17.3 screen). It has an Intel i7 1.6GB processor, 4GB ram and an ATI Radeon 4650.
My problem is that the LiveCD just will not work. It gets to its boot menu, but when I press enter on the boot KDE live CD option, it will either try to boot and then freeze, or it will boot, you will hear that startup music, but the display will go blank. Could it be that it cannot handle my display or the graphics card on the laptop?
Unfortunately I have Windows 7, which doesn't seem to be supported by the windows installer on the DVD, so I can't test if it would work that way.
I must admit that ubuntu has given me the same grief, and so I wonder if maybe the laptop isn't yet supported properly by linux yet?
how I could use a live system or something, to at least try linux for a few things (I would need to retain windows for games and stuff). I'm not into resizing partitions and things, so I would prefer something else that could work.

I recently bought Dell Studio 1747 with i7 processor. My fan keeps running fast and does not slow even when the load on processor is low or idle. In pre-installed Windows 7, fan works perfectly increasing and decreasing speed based on work load. The noise made by the fan is irritating.

h/w config :
GPU-ati4570 512 mb
WiFi-intel5100 half mini card.
The ethernet card manufacturer is Broadcom, dunno the exact number but its same in all the new laptops as the chipset is Intel's GM45.
I tried the drivers supplied by Dell but they all gave dependency errors. Since Internet is not working I can't resolve any.
The distro is RHEL 5.

how to enable bluetooth on Dell Studio 1535.
From the Fedora 10 to the beginning of the Fedora 11, I was successfully enabling bluetooth device on my Dell laptop by putting hid2hci command as a system startup module:
Code:
# echo "/usr/sbin/hid2hci" > /etc/sysconfig/modules/bluetooth.modules
But the latest hid2hci command in bluez package now displays help information instead of turning on the (default?) bluetooth device:
[Code]...
Now your bluetooth device should be enabled during startup. Only one problem still exists, the state of the bluetooth device will be reset if you will turn it off using the hardware turnoff button. If you will turn it on again, you will be required to enter hid2hci command manually.

I just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.
[You can see the keyboard shape here]
On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.
I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.
