CentOS 5 :: Cups Delay Between Jobs?

Nov 16, 2009

Since my last server upgrade, last Thursday, cups is having a strange behavior: I have 3 text-only printers, and an application that prints to them. The application, to print 5 lines, it sends 5 jobs to the printer. Before the upgrade, all the jobs where printed sequentially, without any delay. After the upgrade, cups makes a small delay (5s or more) between every one...Its very annoying for the users...

Ubuntu Servers :: CUPS Very Long Delay Between Sending Jobs And Printing?

Feb 17, 2011

I've set up a cups printing server using ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. The printer's a HP Laser Jet 1018 I can connect to it over vpn using openvpn from my netbook which is also running ubuntu 10.04.1. I can connect to the printer all right and test page prints without a problem. But if I try to print anything else, it take at least 5 minutes before the job is successfully send and printed out.

Also, on the client side, for example, the file size would like 500k, and when it finally prints out, the file size on the server side is less than 10k. The file is a black and white document, and from what I can tell, the printed page is not missing any information.

Software :: Cups Dropping Print Jobs

Apr 30, 2011

I have a problem with cups dropping print jobs. The machine fedora 13 installation using cups 1.4.4-10

The dropped jobs happen only rarely happen and therefore is difficult to debug the problem since it doesn't happen 99% of the time. This morning (while in the shower) I wondered if the lost jobs are lost because they are timing out, perhaps because of slow input from a user. I can test this more later in the week..

The print jobs are initiated from within a COBOL program. COBOL opens the print file as output and at this stage a job appears in the print queue with a status in the print queue of "held".

The user types in various bits of information and when complete the program executes the final write to the output print file. The job is somehow released and then is physically printed by CUPS. I suspect that if the user is slow the "held" job times out and then the job is lost.

There are a number of timeout directives in cups.conf but I am unsure which might be appropriate in this case. Or perhaps there is some other timeout thing happening.

Ubuntu Installation :: Purge CUPS Jobs Older Than 1 Hour?

May 12, 2011

I've setup two printers through a system running Ubuntu server that are shared with 30-40 users on our school network.

If the printers run out of ink or paper, they stop printing. The lazier members of staff don't proceed to recharge the ink or paper so when somebody does, hours later, the old jobs start printing again which the teachers no longer need or want.

I'd like to automatically have my system purge print jobs older than 1 hour. I'm running CUPS and sharing the printers through SAMBA. How do I do this?

Fedora :: 5 Second Delay Printing From Cups?

Aug 26, 2010

Not sure if this is hardware or software so I am raising the question here. I have an Ithaca 280 printer that worked great on fedora 8 with cups 1.3.3. When I upgraded my server and installed Fedora 12 with cups 1.4.2 i noticed a 5 second delay between sending a print job to the printer and it actually printing. This issue doesnt happen with laser printers, just the ithaca thermal printer. I have tested this with 10 other ithaca 280 printers and all of them have the same result. I am using a raw driver, and it is an IP based printer setup for Jetdirect in cups. The setup is identical on a Fedora 8 server as it is on this Fedora 12 server. I have even taken the steps to upgrade to cups 1.4.4 just to see if it was corrected in a newer version, but the issue is still there. I have a utility that writes the raw text directly to the printer which i used to test that it wasnt an issue with the printer or its internal print server. That utility allows the document to print immediately.

what is causing this delay and how to correct it? If not, does anyone know how to print directly to the printer using cups instead of letting it go to the queue first like cups normally does for print jobs?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Cups Loses Jobs - Doesn't Show Up At The Server

Feb 7, 2011

I have a 11.3 machine as a print server sharing out a printer Then I have two clients using that printer. One 11.3 and one 11.4 6 of 6. When I print from LibreOffice on either machines every other print job disappears. I'm a bit puzzled ! It's not random it's exactly every other that doesn't show up at the server. It's not in the server job log.

Software :: CUPS - Print Jobs Shows Completed, But Page Doesn't Print?

Dec 6, 2008

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.

Code:

Software :: CUPS Jobs Stay In "processing" After A Paper Jam?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a home Linux box with Mandriva 2007.1 and installed a Samsung ML-1210 I use it as a network printer. Sometimes the printer jams the paper and it won't print after it.

The situation is as follows: The paper gets jammed. I clear it and everything looks fine. When I want to print the print job stays in "processing" and the printer doesn't do anything. It doesn't matter if I send the job locally via VNC or from a remote machine with IPP or from a windows client with samba. The job is received, gets to the processing phase but nothing happens after that. It seems like if the printer wasn't connected. The only way I was able to solve this is to completely restart my Linux Box.

- Switching off/on the printer doesn't work.

- Plugging the USB cable in a different slot doesn't work either (I even replaced the USB cable)

- Restarting the CUPS and SAMBA server won't help

- Switching the printer offline/online in CUPS does nothing

- I tried to change "reprint after paper jam" and other settings, still doesn't work.

It looks like nothing helps, but after I restart the box, everything works again.

There's a line in the cups error log that is suspicious, but I don't know what to do with it:

SLPReg of "SAMSUNML1210" failed with status -20!

Slackware :: CUPS Print Jobs Print 1st Page OK, But All Others Are Overwritten?

Feb 26, 2011

Not sure when CUPS started acting up. I have the latest 13.1 current software installed. The first page to print is always OK, but all succeeding pages are overwritten. The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.

Ubuntu Installation :: Post-GRUB 2 Delay - Troubleshoot This And Determine What Is Causing The Delay

May 11, 2011

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

Basically when I boot the machine I first see the terminal login, then after a moment I get what looks like some graphical corruption followed by GDM appearing.

I've already attempted reinstalling GNOME and X, then manually reinstalling GDM, but none have solved the problem. I'm currently in the process of enabling boot logging as described in the thread, so I'll post that soon.

Server :: Using CentOS 5 For Squid - Delay Pools Settings

Apr 24, 2011

I am using centos 5 for squid. I have enabled delay pools in it. The scenario is I have two clients machines have IP address 192.168.1.200 (The Manager) and 192.168.1.201 (Manager Assistant). The issue is I assign 512kbps to the Manager IP address and 128 to his assistant. When either of them download it start from 60 KB/Sec they finally get 11 KB/Sec which is wrong. If I disable the assistant delay pools settings then the Manager get 60KB/Sec continuously. By enabling both squid does not show any error.

Following is my line of code taken from squid.conf
Code:

I have install squid 2.6 in my cent os 5 system. The proxy server is working perfect using the following method.
Code:
[root@localhost squid-2.6.STATBLE22]# ./configure@--prefix=/usr/local/squid

I want to enable delay pools feature in it.For that purpose I do as following
Code:
[root@localhost squid-2.6.STATBLE22]# ./configure --enable-delay-pools && "configuration successful"

The question is should I configure it as I do it for squid
./configure --enable-delay-pools--prefix=/usr/local/squid
To enable delay pools may I need the correction in the steps which I have taken.
[root@localhost squid-2.6.STATBLE22]#make
[root@localhost squid-2.6.STATBLE22]# make install

In short to enable delay pools may I just use
# ./configure --enable-delay-pools
then
#make
#make install

Ubuntu Security :: 631/tcp CUPS / Close Port / Stop This Service / Tell Update Manager To Shove Cups?

Running: Ubuntu 10.10

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:

- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

Debian :: Cups Not Starting With The Server / Getting Error Unable To Read Configuration File '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - Exiting?

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message

cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!

The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.

My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

Ubuntu Servers :: CUPS Not Forwarding To Other Polled CUPS' In 10.04?

Mar 22, 2011

I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.

If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:

172.16.10.52 - - [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] "POST /printers/103_hp4250 HTTP/1.1" 200 306 Create-Job client-error-not-authorized

and error_log shows:
E [22/Mar/2011:11:11:40 -0500] Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/103_hp4250) from 172.16.10.52

We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.

cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:

ServerName sysadmin
ServerAlias *
ServerAdmin webmaster
FileDevice Yes
SystemGroup staff
LogLevel info
code....

Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.

I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.

I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:

- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
