CentOS 5 :: 12GB Of RAM On 32bit XEN Kernel - MemInfo Versus XMTop

Feb 10, 2010

I have a server with 12 Gig or ram in it (has per bios detection). Free and meminfo agree.
[root@virtualHost ~]# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 7726080 794136 6931944 0 50036 391236
-/+ buffers/cache: 352864 7373216
Swap: 8385888 0 8385888

xm top does not :
xentop - 13:36:07 Xen 3.1.2-164.11.1.el5
5 domains: 2 running, 3 blocked, 0 paused, 0 crashed, 0 dying, 0 shutdown
Mem: 12577024k total, 12575312k used, 1712k free CPUs: 4 @ 2833MHz

In my /proc/cpuinfo I can see pae in the flags. None of my domUs are going to need more than 3 GB of ram but I was wondering what is the REAL ammount of RAM accessible to the system. If I run 4 domU at the same time. Around 7 GB or 12 GB?

CentOS 5 :: How To Tell Difference Between 32bit And 64bit When Kernel Is Missing

Jul 14, 2010

I have a system with a missing or damaged kernel and I need to reinstall some software to fix it (see this thread for reference removed xen and kernel is gone). I feel fairly certain I can fix my system with the info in that thread however I don't know if this was a 32bit or 64bit system. How can I tell after using the dvd and linux rescue or does it even matter?

I placed Ubuntu on the same drive as my windows XP is, and there were no problems, everything was fine, all drivers were working...I need to use kernel 2.6.29 and i read about "how to install a new kernel" on this forum. I downloaded 3 files, I installed them in a good sequence. After reboot I can choose between 3 kernels, and if I choose this, then there is a mounting problem:

mounting none on /dev failed

Afterthat there is written something else, what I cant read. Some seconds later ubuntu boots, but my (non-USB) mouse isnt working.

What does that mean?Does that refer to the hardware or the CentOS OS? An 32bit CentOS can be installed on a 64bit hardware!I am interested in the OS capability not of the hardware!

Fedora :: Moving From 32bit To 64bit Kernel

Aug 12, 2011

I have been running F14 as a 32-bit system (original m/b was 32-bit). Now the system is on a 64-bit dual-core processor board and I'd like to change from the 32-bit kernel to 64-bit. I downloaded a 64-bit kernel (kernel-2.6.35.6-45.fc14.86_64.rpm) and attempted to install it. It won't install and Package Installer returns a message of the sort that says this file "has incompatible architecture.

Valid architectures are ['athlon', 'i686', 'i586', 'i486'....]". My processor is an Athlon 64 x2. Is it possible to do what I want to do (I only want the kernel at the moment)? Is there some Fedora file I need to modify to allow the system to install the 64-bit kernel for this m/b? Do I need another file (or files) installed before I install the kernel?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Ping -I On 5.2 Versus 4.7

Feb 12, 2009

I have two CentOS servers on the same LAN. One is CentOS 4.7 the other 5.2 They both also have a WAN interface to the same remote network. On CentOS 4.7 I can ping the remote network through the CentOS 5.2 server. i.e. ping -I eth0 remotehost On CentOS 5.2 I can NOT force the ping to go out the CentOS 4.7 server without over riding my routing tables to make eth0 a more direct route than the eth1 route.

On 5.2 If I do the ping -I eth0 remotehost, and a tcpdump on eth0, the outbound ping will not be going out eth0, he overrides it and sends it out eth1. In fact, on CentOS 4.7 if I do not have a route to the remote network through the other server (turn proxy arp off on the 5.2 machine), I will get "Destination Host Unreachable". I would ideally like to get the 5.2 machine to behave the way the 4.7 machine does.

My real life application for this is that I have a CentOS server in a location that controls access to the Internet. There is another router on the netowrk that handles traffic back to our corporate office. the CentOS server also has the ability to get to the corporate office. I ping the corporate office through eth0 to find out if the link through the other router is indeed up and active. I want to make this a CentOS 5.2 server but alas, I can not tell if the other route is up or not.

CentOS 5 :: YUM - Install Versus Upgrade

Feb 18, 2011

How does yum determine to "upgrade" an rpm verses "install" (and possibly delete) a package when performing a yum update? I have read documentation that yum uses the "Obsolete" and "Conflicts" tags within the rpm to determine whether to upgrade or install a new rpm. Is this correct and complete? I recall from somewhere kernel rpms should always be installed and never upgraded. How does yum determine that kernel rpms need to be installed using rpm -i as opposed to rpm -U? I have scanned a kernel spec file looking for clues without any luck.

Slackware :: Software RAID 1 Versus LILO / Kernel-generic - ERROR: No /sbin/init Found On Rootdev

Jul 1, 2011

I'm currently trying to setup Slackware 13.7 on a server, using software RAID 1. I'm using the README_RAID.TXT document at the root of the Slackware disc as a reference. Anyway, here's what I have so far.

/dev/md1 -> /boot partition
/dev/md2 -> swap partition
/dev/md3 -> / partition

Code:

[root@raymonde:~] # fdisk -l /dev/sd{a,b}
Disk /dev/sda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders, total 80293248 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

[code]....

I created an initrd image using mkinitrd -F, added an according stanza to /etc/lilo.conf and ran 'lilo' after that. Now I can boot on the vanilla huge kernel all right. But I can't seem to boot on the generic kernel. Whenever I try to do this, the boot process stops short on the following error message:

Code:

mount: mounting /dev/md3 on /mnt failed: Device or resource busy
ERROR: no /sbin/init found on rootdev

(Second Try) I installed CentOS 5.5 from CDs 32 bit, everything works fine. I then re-install, but this time 64 bit, everything else is the same, I use all of the same options. This time though it sees the network card, and allows me to configure it and activate it. It will not connect outside of it's self, IE it can ping it's self, but nothing else. Go back to 32 bit, and zero problems, try 64 again, no network. Each time I do full installs with partition formatting etc. In case it makes hill-o-beans difference, Intel P4, 2.66 Ghz. 2.0 GB RAM MSi Motherboard.

The first server I installed installed fine. The second server, installed with the same config, went to "kernel panic not syncing no init found try passing init= option in kernel" error. I tried reinstalling but it keeps going to that error after install reboot. The storage is ISCSI connected via Intel Server Adapter, which allows it to boot from ISCSI. Not sure if that's the cause for the problem, but the first server is connected to the same ISCSI and installed just fine.

Is there a way that I can make sure ISCSI module installs during installation? Although I think it is installed since it's able to copy the files and setup /dev/sda. I just wana make sure that it installs during setup.

CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5 Home Server Power Consumtion? (features, Kernel Versions Etc.)?

Feb 28, 2010

I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..

So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?

2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?

Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).
