1/ I haven't catch the difference between dwdiff, diff or dircomp If one wants to only output files (JPEG, doc, etc.), which have been created, absent or modified The command:
diff -r -q
works well, any advantage for another command? Subtilities between commands for issues like:
* identical content, but renamed files
* identical names & date & weight, but different content (virus)
2/ Is there a way to tell diff to store in a specific directory all missmatched files?
Something as
diff - r -q oldBackup actualData /media/sda1/discrepant
Where diff would store in media/sda1/discrepant all files which are new or modified after comparison between oldBackup and actualData

I am not especially cli adept so could someone tell me the best way to use the diff command to get the difference between a string of text and the contents of a file instead of between the contents of two files?

i can run kde apps in gnome, and vice versa. So, it got me wondering, why does there need to be kde applications and gnome applications? if they both will run on the other, then whats the difference? does it have to do with how they're written? is one better than the other?

Login as root; "pkill mplay";hear nothing; "/etc/rc2.d/S99test"; more loveliness; press pause...silence! I know that i the former case, mplayer is assigned (for lack of a proper term) to a session, e.g. tty1. Not so in the latter. But why should a program like mplayer not receive (or ignore?) input from lircd, simply because it doesn't have a session? And how can I get mplayer (or any program run from boot scripts) to work with other programs (like lircd)?

so i have a few shell scripts that execute wonderfully when i type them at the command line but they fail when they are run from cron.
for example, if i run a script from command line that contains

shopt -s nullglob
to prevent problems with for f in *.mp4 type loops, it works fine from terminal command line but when called from cron, it gives an error->

/home/centralsqwall/Videos/videochecker.sh: 91: shopt: not found
a couple other random errors as well...
so there is some difference in the shell from cron and the terminal?
i'm running ubuntu 9.10, #!/bin/bash
what are the commands i should be using to echo my environment or simulate cron environment from the terminal?

I am trying to read a 5 1/4 in. floppy disk using an Intel D865 PERL motherboard, at 3 GHz. Bios was set to read this floppy. The system Lenny 2.6.31 i386 can't detect the 5.25 drive. Drive select seems not to be responding on the 5.25 drive. When connecting a 3 1/2 in. drive to the same motherboard connector (after changing the BIOS setting appropriately), r/w is ok under both linux and XP. I have tried three floppy 5.25 drives and different cables. All known to be ok on another box. I have tried XP and another linux, Etch. I have installed the latest available Bios upgrade from Intel. Upgraded from 0061 to 0089 bios versions. Is this a possible connector difference between 3.5 and 5.25 drives on the drive select line? The cable drive end connectors are different between the two drives.

so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.
After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black,white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?
Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point?If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?

I am a redhat admin and also use Ubuntu. Installed opensuse on my home machine to give it a whirl. I can't seem to figure out why i can't open gui application from the command line.
I receive a GTK error when trying to open with sudo. What am i doing wrong?
EDIT: NM solved my own question, had to add DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY to the sudoers file.

I'm testing a beta release of Lubuntu 10.04 on an old laptop and am very impressed. I'm able to autostart applications by adding icons to the ~/.config/autostart directory but have yet to discover where I can autostart command line applications such as xbindkeys and htop.
Which hidden file needs to be edited to autostart xbindkeys and htop? (In openbox I would have edited ~/.config/autostart.sh)

I recently upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 succesfully. I had to reinstall several applications and, some of them, can't be configured as default from the control panel (e.g. Opera as default browser, VLC as default media player). The problem is that droplists at the prefered applications don't show any other than the default ones, Firefox and TotemIs there a way I can change these settings via command line or a way to fix what applications are shown at the control panel?

I've been looking though different editors for one that has good printing support. Ideally it should be able to print C++ code with line numbers, syntax highlighting, multiple columns per page, customizable fonts and sizes and a print preview feature so that I can make sure it looks right before sending it to the printer. It appears that notepad++ had at least some of these features, but it is not available on linux. The best I could do so far is to copy/paste the output of 'cat -n foo.cpp' into oowriter and format it into two colums. I don't get synax highlighting though and I have to manually replace tabs with a few spaces as well as some excessive leading spaces before the line numbering.

I have centos 5.29 on one hard drive in a box and now someone wants to hook up his own XP Hard drive every now and then when I am not using centos.
Rather than have to disconnect everytime, is there a way I can have the 2 drives in the box and have the option at bootup which one to use?

I would like to compare the (screen) output of one bash script with the (screen) output of another bash script to ensure the output is exactly the same.The reason for this is that I am receiving a consolidated data feed from an IP address and have moved some of the data feed to a 'new' source IP address. I will turn off the feed from the original once satisfied that the new is receiving the same data. The format of the output from the scripts are exactly the same.
Tried so far

Where can i find such subj? I don't see that standart diff supports such feature. It will be used for backup big directory like /home. Because directory is too big so repositories like svn are unacceptable. Good case seems to be diff+tar.gz to save differences for last n-th monthes for example. /home could contain doth hard and symbolic links that are not resolvable on backup machine but could have sense at all (= be resolvable on other machines where /home is used too via nfs mounting).

I would like to make a one-liner, which diff's "ps aux" output before and after killing a process. So basically it should be a combination of fallowing commands:
1) diff -u
2) ps aux | awk '{print $2}'
3) kill `ps aux | grep [c]ron | awk '{print $2}'`
4) ps aux | awk '{print $2}'
How to achieve this? Something like this:

I have Fedora in dual boot with windows on a laptop. I have a weird clock problem. If I get the clock set correctly in Fedora, then it's 4 hours too fast in Windows. When I fix it in Windows and then restart into Fedora, it's 4 hours too slow in Fedora!Why are they competing with each other and how do I get them to both be correct?

I have a program that writes to stdout. Is there a way that I can redirect the output to the linux diff command or do I have to write the output to a file and then compare that. For example I have a bunch of test input files for a program and the corresponding expected output in another set of files. And I'd like to do something like ./program < t1.input | diff t1.expected.

i tried using diff --GTYPE-group-format= with <%, but not sure that right solution.Here's what im trying to do. I have two c source files, file1 and file2. file1 has a function in it that's been modified in file2. However, the functions begin at differnt line numbers in eachof the files. Is there a way to specify a range of file numbers on file1 and file2 to compare, using diff or any other combination of utilities? I can always output text from a range of lines from each file to two separate and new files and then compare those, but that's tedious. I could also write up a script to automate this type of solution, but I imagine there's an existing way of doing this.
