CentOS 5 :: Package Manager Hangs During RPM Install?
Sep 6, 2010I just installed 32-bit CentOS 5.5 in a Vmware virtual machine. I'm unable to install RPMs from either the graphical U/I (Pirut) or CLI (Yum). Pirut stops responding (no screen repainting) after displaying the "Updating software" dialog; Yum gets to the display of "Running Transaction" where it hangs. The initial installation (from the net-install ISO) obviously succeeded, and the after-install update of about 50 packages also worked fine.
yum.log contains nothing past the entries made during the initial install. Because I had a problem with corrupted files from a mirror during installation I tried using the baseurl setting in CentOS-Base.repo instead of mirrorlist, but that had no effect.

May 27, 2009i'm trying to install virt-manager , to run a couple of virtual machines, i created a virtual nic vnet0 and bridged it to my eth0, i have configured the /etc/network/interfaces file with proper static ip, but i beleive the network manager is renaming my nic to eth1 and causing all kinds of problems. I uninstalled network manager and now i can ping anywhere in the network, but not outside it. ie google.com

May 7, 2010I installed debian with minimal packages (without an any X components). Later I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel , xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd ... and other X components through apt-get. Created a Xorg.conf file.
On execution of X, I see black screen without cursor. What are the other minimal packages that I need to install in order to run any window-manager like openbox.. ?

Feb 10, 2011I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files�47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.
Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

Feb 14, 2011I have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.

I have been updating my system and making a few changes and now I have a serious problem with GNOME (as far a I understand). In the Desktop if I try to start some applications such as the text editor gedit it crashes and won't start. Some applictions start from the menu some don't (e.g. services) and others start and then crash if I try to example manipulate them (e.g. open a file in openoffice).
In the case of gedit if I try to run it from the command line as root I get the following

Do I get exactly the same information (as GUI) as when I use "yum" (as cmdline)? Do both tools show essentially always the same info about installed software? Or is it possible that yum does not something about software which is installed by GUI Package manager or vice versa? Do they share the same software repository database?

I'm guessing it's a permission problem. But I don't know the internal structure of NetworkManager and what files to look at. I was also expecting that after stopping the network service "Syetem->Admin->Network" would be inactive, but it isn't. Shouldn't the old network manager be uninstalled as well?

Jan 7, 2010I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.
Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?

Having just got Revelation 0.4.11 working on the laptop, I notice that the panel applet, 'Revelation Account Search' is not available, whereas it is still listed on the DT.
Firstly, why would this be and secondly, is it possible to copy this across because I find it really useful?
