I made a backup copy of my system before encountering a problem. Now I want to install Ubuntu 11.04 and use the system backup, but I can't copy it to disc because it is just over 10 Gb.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI back up all my digital photos to a couple of places. I've been using the cp command, but--given the personal value--have started to wonder if there's a more reliable way. I'm no stranger to Linux, Bash, Perl, etc., so I could write something to copy and compare md5 hashes, but I was wondering if something already exists (reinvention, wheels and what-not).
Most of my googling for copy and (verify|valid|check|hash|confirm) turns up rsync. However, as far as I can tell, rsync only uses hashes to see if a file needs to be updated. It doesn't perform a hash comparison afterward. For this use, specifically, the files are binary and typically 8-10MB.
Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a usb stick in persistent install mode. So I could boot the laptop or my desktop computer with the stick, at boot time. Once I needed the 8GB stick for another purposes so I thought about coyping it to my desktop doing from mac os x: dd if=/dev/disks3s of=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy
Now I am trying to do the opposite, after having used the stick, which was formatted to NTFS, just doing
dd if=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy of=/dev/disks3s
but although I can see that almost of the files are there, I can not boot again. IT is also strange the the file permissions are kind of strange, something like _user
I just got a 2TB drive with the intention of backing up multiple Ubuntu machines to it. What would be the best way to do this, keeping ease of restoration in mind? Should I just copy each drive image to the BU drive, or use a utility like Back in Time?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to backup my server that godaddy is hosting and install it on my linux system at home. In other words I want to have a clone of my server at home, like what timemachine does on mac (carries files and programs from one mac to another to make a clone).
How do I do that? I create an image file an iso file? or what? How?

Using redhat linux el5, when I had booted I had pbm repairing filesystem. So I run following commands

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.

Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.

can i just copy/backup postfix mail queues in /var/spool/postfix and paste that folder back in after i done migrating all users and mails to a new mailserver?

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:

It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump
I've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?

I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:
file: including.txt:
This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:
# delete backups older than 7 days
find /mnt/backup/* -mtime +7 -exec rm -Rf {} ;
The problem is, every morning I get an email with an error message something like this:
find: `/mnt/backup/subfolder': No such file or directory

The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:

I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP.
