I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ).
It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.

I have a litle problem. I have change the gnome trash icon and when the trash is full it doesn`t change the icon. I am using the Mist icons. I went to /usr/share/icons/Mist but i didn`t find any trash icon there. I was thinking to change all the trash icons from there with my custom icons (empty trash icon and full trash icon).

Does anyone know how to add a fully working (icon changes) Trashcan to the Desktop Folder View?I don't want the plasmoid/widget on the Desktop or on the Task Manager Panel.I can right click -> Create New -> Link to Location(URL), but the icon doesn't change.If the Desktop Folder View is a plasmoid, I guess I'm asking can a plasmoid (trash can) run inside another plasmoid (desktop view) %-)

I have to delete a certain line of text from the a textfile via ubuntu's shell scripting.I have done research, and it seems that most people advocate the usage of sed /d option. sed makes does not edit the text file. Hence, most options I discovered involved the use of a temporary variable/textfile and then overwriting the old file with the temporary new file. Is there anyway whereby I can bypass the use of temporary storage containers? I hope there is any magical combination of commands to edit the file directly.

I'm running Lucid Lynx 10.04 x64 here and the following issues:
1. How do I change the icon text for applications?
2. I can't seem to burn DVDs successfully (CDs burn ok though). I've tried burning with K3b, Nero and Brasero - all fail to produce a readable DVD. My burner seems to produce readable DVDs when running WinXP with Nero though.

I am working on a script to convert a comma seperated text file into html code line by line. The text file is like so:
Code:
link url, image url, description and I want it to output this:
Code:
<td><a href=link url><img src="image url" alt=description" /></a></td>
Here is what I have so far:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
var1='<td><a href=
var2='><img src="'
var3='" alt=thumbnail image" /></a></td>'
[code].....
It puts the entire line into the html so its no good. I'll probably need to use awk (I think).

I have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?

I just can't stand knowing that there's a slight problem with my PC.I have roughly 12.5 Gigs of files, mostly movies that are multiple clones of a particular movie (which was an entirely different problem altogether) and I CANNOT DELETE THESE THINGS! There has to be a simple way to do it from terminal, problem is, I can't seem to find the trash directory in terminal.

Through various Windows reinstalls and switches within Linux distros, I have a massive amount of duplication within my music archive (on the order of 7+ dupes of each file). Now, I found a lovely program called "fdupes" and was able to build a list of all the duplicate files, and I'm trying to use "xargs" to remove then. However, when I try and run the command "xargs -0 --arg-file="dupes.txt" rm" or "xargs -0 rm < "dupes.txt"" it give me the following error: "xargs: argument line too long".
how perhaps a different way of accomplishing the same thing?

I need to chop of the top 30ish lines of several log files until a line starting with "Initialization completed."The trouble is that it's not always the same amount of lines that need to be deleted, and they don't always contain the same information, which is why I would need to delete everything priorhe line starting with "Initialization completed."Right now I have a little script I wrote based on looping each file through several "grep -v" commands with each known pattern of lines I want to ignore, but it is tedious and I have to inspect each file afterwards to make sure nothing is left from above "Initialization completed

I recently tried to delete some files off of my USB drive and it was being glitchy and really slow so I pulled the drive out and put it back in so it would read normally again. I now have an "untitled folder" in my trash that can't be deleted, and the error says "no such file or directory". Unlike a lot of the other problems I've read with not being able to delete the trash files, I don't think this is a permissions problem.
I probably made a stupid mistake and went into the .Trash-1000 folder for the USB drive itself and tried to delete the files, but each time I did that it just duplicated the original folder and renamed it, and now I can't delete those files either!

I have a few folders I need to remove and when I right click delete or move to trash not available. I guess I don't have permission. I am the sole user of this machine and the Admin. How do I remove these folders. The folders were part of ClamAV which has been removed. They show up as a virus in my Avast Anti Virus.

I use Markdown to store all of my source documents. Unfortunately, the .md extension maps to application/x-genesis-rom under Ubuntu. I'm not sure why that would be a system default MIME type, but I'd like to change it.
I've tried using:
Code:
gksu assogiate
to modify my file type cache. Unfortunately, even as the SU, I can't modify the entry for this file type. The "Remove" button is inactivated for the entry. (See attachment.)
How can I get rid of this (obsolete?) file association? Alternatively, how can I make my new one (text/x-markdown) take precedence?

Straight to the problem on my [Ubuntu 9.10].I cannot delete or empty my .Trash-1000 folder on my flash drive. I tried changing permission with chmod but no way, I cannot empty the folder via the Ubuntu main trash option 'Empty Trash'. I read a bunch of threads but no way.Do you know a solution that works to this problem?Even further. Do you know a way to tell nautilus to avoid using that folder in my USB devices and use instead the normal trash folder on my system?

I am looking for a way to permanently delete files immediately - no trash, no taking up space but a command to make a file immediately gone. I have a USB flash drive and it has a hidden .trash file on it that builds-up until I have no more room on the flash drive - all space taken up by deleted files. I need a command that bypasses the trash and immediately deletes a file for good making space available.

A long time ago I was trying to find a way to have the computer icon, the home icon, and the trash icon on my desktop in Ubuntu (like in windows), I got them on fine. When I put them on I used some program that was already on Ubuntu, the guide I used told me it was the equivalent of the registry editor in windows. Now I want to get on this program again to see what I can do?

Well I'll start off with the recent changes I've made. I have three hard drives in my PC, two of which are formated NTFS. I recently installed Storage Device Manager and changed a few options around so they auto-mount of start up. Well when I did this, and wanted to delete files off those drives, I suddenly was being promoted that I must delete them permanently or not all at (wouldn't go into the trash)
I added the lines to FSTAB: uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1
So for example my secondary drive is:
nls=iso8859-1,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000,0,1
And also added .Trash-1000 folders in each of the two NTFS drives.
When I delete items off one of the two NTFS disks they go to the trash... I don't get the "delete forever" prompt and I can actually see them in the trash bin.
But when I empty the trash the icon remains that of the "full" trash, despite when I open it there being no trash in it.

From what I gather, there's no way to remove the Trash icon from the Unity launcher, or to hide it; is this true? I noticed that if I delete ~/.local/share/Trash, the file re-appears if I click on the Trash icon in the launcher.
