Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Files From One Server To Another

Mar 10, 2011

I'm moving my site to a new VPS and need to learn how to move the files from my current server to the new one. I'd rather not download everything to my computer and then re-upload everything... seems like a lot of wasted time. There has to be a way to copy between the two servers, but how? I have heard someone mention rsync... is that a program I could use? If so, how?

Ubuntu :: Moving Files In Terminal \ Moving Files That Have Root Permissions?

Mar 4, 2010

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

Server :: After Moving PHP Files To /var/www They No Longer Are Seen As Hosted Php Files

Feb 25, 2010

I am setting up a Demo website that I am hosting in a Debian Lenny VM, I have installed Apache, mySQL, and PHP5 I know the php server is working because if I place an info php file I can see it in the browser. However, I downloaded phpfusion, as well as phpmyadmin and they are on my desktop, I open a superuser file browser (also added write access to /var/www to everybody and copied the files over as me) and copied over the files. Once in the www folder they are no longer seen as "valid" php files, if I try to access them with iceweasel, IE, Konquerer it asks me if I want to download the file. If I look at the files on my desktop they have different icons. I have attached a screenshot. I can't tell what the difference is, but obviously there is one otherwise the icons wouldn't be different. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here or a way to rectify it?

Ubuntu :: Moving Files To A Pendrive Renders 0 Bytes Files And Files Gets Deleted

Jun 10, 2011

I get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.

Ubuntu :: Lost Files During Moving Files With Nautlis?

Oct 16, 2010

I was moving a folder using Nautilus from an internal drive to a USB drive when suddenly, the power failed and the system rebooted before the UPS could go into backup. After I booted the PC again, half the files are are in neither of the drives. Do they go into a temporary folder first? There's nothing in /tmp and there's no Lost+Found folder. Is there anyway to get back those files? I'll always copy and delete from now on instead of moving.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Var/www And MySQL Databases

Aug 12, 2010

Quick searches did not bring forth any standard solution.

I have installed Ubuntu Server 10 (x64) using LVM with two disks (this is a Virtual Machine on VMWare ESXi4)

During install I selected only disk 1, and LVM guided Installation Added LAMP and SSH

Server gives only a text mode configuration, great if you are a linux guru, but I am not so it took a bit to find a stripped down GUI. None could be found but I did the following:

apt-get install xorg gdm gnome-core (minimal Gnome install)
apt-get install gnome-system-tools (users and *****s, time)
apt-get install gnome-network-admin (network config)
apt-get install update-notifier (updates)

[Code].....

I have created a similar system with Ubuntu, now I wish to move the var/www directory to sda1, and the databases from MySQL.

Ubuntu :: Lockup When Moving Files?

After updating to 10.10, I started getting hard freezes on a regular (read: every 10 min.during use) basis. A bit of diagnosis showed me that it was only a problem during periods of intensive I/O activity (moving files, downloading, etc.).A bug report started with:BUG: soft lockup - CUP#0 stuck for 61s! [kswapd0:26]I reinstalled 9.04, and was able to successfully copy 15gb from one drive to another. I upgraded to 9.10, and copied it back.Upgraded to 10.04 and copied it again. 10.10, it copied a few mb and froze.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access To Web Server Files ?

Jul 24, 2011

I'm new to Linux and have taken over at a company where the linux admin walked out. he has several older linux based servers running version 8.1 i tried running the command sudo apt-get install swat xinetd to setup swat but i get an error that it can't find the package. in addition, this directory xinetd is no where to be found under the etc directory. i've verified that samba is in fact installed on these servers but for some reason the xinetd and inetd directories are not on these servers.

Could it be possible that this older version of linux does not support Swat? i'm considering upgrading very soon to the latest but my main problem right now is i need to copy all web server html files that he had on the web Server i know there are different ways to copy files from linux systems but need the best way to copy all the files so none of the website links get broke off this linux server over to my windows server.

Since i don't have access to anything of the directories nor files on the web server, what is the best way to copy these files and folders off this server?

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Raid System To A New Host?

Aug 3, 2011

A while back I successfully set up a software raid (mdadm) install of ubuntu server on a cheap Compaq machine. I'm pretty sure it's running an nForce 430 chipset. Anyway, I put 3 2TB drives in it and set up two arrays: a small raid1 array for /boot and a raid5 array occupying the rest of the drives.

One point of note here is that the raid1 array never seemed to "take hold": the partition is empty, and the system has been booting entirely from the raid5 array. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not: just throwing it in there in case it is.

Anyway, I recently upgraded my desktop PC, and planned to hand down the Q6600 and DG33TL motherboard from it to the server. I did the hardware upgrade, but now the system will not boot. My question is: why.

Boot fails with the following error message:

"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

This to me suggests that it's not even getting to the point of running grub2: the mobo itself just isn't finding anything it considers to be bootable.

I've tried all combinations I can think of of configuring the SATA support in the BIOS (modes include IDE, ACHI and RAID, all in combination with UEFI boot enabled and disabled). The system does detect the three drives: it lists them in the BIOS config screen.

I've booted from an ubuntu rescue USB drive and I'm able to see the drives and even assemble the array. I can mount the LVM partitions therein and do what I'd normally be able to do with them.

Everything *seems* fine: it just can't boot.

Grub2 is something of a mystery to me, so I'm not exactly sure what I need to do to get it booting again, if indeed it is a problem with grub.

now i have a fresh install of 8.04 (i had to uninstall it because i move partitions ad grub wents down, i tried EVERYTHING and nothing but reinstalling it)i used puppy linux to extract my files (home folder) and save it int a new ext3 partition, then when this ubuntu8.04 was OK, i tried to move my files back. i tried to doit from ubuntu, and i saw a little padlock on the folder, i tryed to move it, and i cant, then i restart to tryit form puppy, i was able to doit from puppy, then i restart again back to ubuntu, now with the folder in ubuntu partition i now have to put each file/folder where it was supposed to be, but again i saw some older with the padlock icon and with the same problem, that i can't move it because i have no permission. i tryed to find some help before opening this thread but all i want was to open a gksudo nautilus on terminal, but that doesnt fix anything, because that open a wibdows and i only can move "locked" files withing that folder, and those are my files i need to move it all the time, i can't open a gksudo nautilus every time i want to move one of my files.

Ubuntu :: SVN Errors While Moving Files Into New Directory

taylor@ubuntu:~/Projects/Slicer4/Applications/CLI/Multiply/Data$ mkdir Baseline

svn: 'Baseline' is not a working copy

I am simply trying to move a file (MultiplyTest.nrrd) into a new directory (Baseline) in order to make the program (Slicer4) more organized. I googled my error and found a few like it but they all involved installing SVN so none of the solutions apply to me. And I have tried deleting Baseline and remaking it.

Ubuntu :: Moving Tmp Partition - GDM Special Files

Aug 14, 2011

I'm in the process of moving /tmp out of the root filesystem to it's own (larger) partition. From a LiveCD I've:

1. Created the new part (ext4 format and is /dev/sda4)
2. Mounted the installed OS root filesystem (/dev/sda1) as /slash
3. Mounted /dev/sda4 as /newtmp
4. Using gksudo nautilus I'm trying to copy the contents of /slash/tmp to /newtmp

I have 4 files that won't copy - returning the error "Can't copy special files". These are related to ORBit it seems:

[code]...

Questions are: a. Will GDM or ORBit fail if I start up without these? b. Or will they just be recreated on the fly if found to be missing? c. What's the best way to proceed?

Server :: Rsync Files Between Web Servers?

May 20, 2010

I've 15 web servers (in private network) running RHEL, Apache. Needs to sync web files between them. each server is accessible to each other via public key (with passphares).

1) Main server is web1 (where dev upload files initially). So I can make all other servers accessible by web1 without password/passphares and run rsync periodically to update files between them. But security is an issue here as all servers will become easily accessible.

2) Run rsync daemon in all other servers (except web1) on designated port and run rsync command from web1 to sync files. This will do the work but running daemon in all servers might increase overhead and making sure that daemon is running all the time etc. are my concern for this implementation.

Ubuntu Servers :: Moving Websites From Shared Host To Xen Based VPS

Nov 12, 2010

I am moving some websites from a shared host to a newly configured Xen based VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. A steep learning curve but I am getting there! I have a couple of sites installed on the new server and want to test them out, from what I understand I should be able to edit /etc/hosts on my desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) which should automatically redirect my browser to the new server. But it doesn't seem to work.

This is what I appended to the /etc/hosts file:
12.34.56.78 www.xxxx.com

I thought that this should send any requests for www.xxxx.com to 12.34.56.78? Some googling indicated that the browsers I am using may be using DNS caching, ignoring the hosts file. I've tried clearing the cache with Chromium 7.0.517.44 (64615) and Firefox 3.6.12, and even installed a plugin in Firefox to block DNS caching.

* it freezes now and then when moving lots of files.

* Slow to navigate while large amounts of data are moving or displaying.

* Slow presenting of files where there are a lot of them (it should only render whatever is in screen and maybe render a properly sized navigation bar. Anything else shouldnt freeze the client. Render at its once pace if at all. I dont move the scroll bar it shouldnt freeze

* It doesnt queue (meaning it moves everything at the same time instead of queueing stuff, what makes moving stuff take longer) .

Ubuntu :: Inexplicably Long Pauses When Moving Files?

Mar 31, 2011

I'm wondering what might be causing some VERY long delays when I move groups of files from one directory to another on the same drive. In the GUI, I simply multi(shift)select a few dozen items at once (a set of JPEGs previously downloaded from my camera) and drag them together from the source directory window (where I downloaded all the images from the memory card) into a new/empty folder/window specific to that group of images. Just routine sorting of files basically... Once I 'let go' ('dropping' the items into their destination) there's often a SURPRISINGLY long delay before I can do something else within the GUI... open another file, or rename an item, etc... This delay can take a few seconds to more than a minute (if moving a couple hundred files at once)... this 'wait' during such a routine 'housekeeping' task seems surprising to me. During these delays, I CAN open/use other programs such as System Monitor or a browser... it just seems that additional GUI/filesystem tasks must wait out the delay before proceeding. If I go ahead and try to do another filesystem task during the delay anyway, it gets buffered... the file won't open/next files don't get moved/etc... UNTIL the delay from the first operation is complete (updated item counts resulting from file moves aren't reflected in List View until the delay is finished too).

According to System Monitor (see image attachment for screen cap during one of these delays...) one CPU is pegged (the "gvfsd-metadata" process, which I guess corresponds to the file/move) and the other 3 cores are relatively idle, and there's plenty of free RAM/no swap. I'd have thought such a delay wouldn't be an issue with Ubuntu/my PC... maybe I have something set up incorrectly? Other clues: intermittently, during these delays/file operations, the GUI shuts down all open windows (folders)... as if the delays/buffered tasks caused some sort of reset. The hard drive is internal SATA formatted regular Ext4 and the Ubuntu on my PC is the 32-bit version since I figured my Dell is too old (about 4-5 years) to justify the 64-bit version. Like most folks, there are LOTS of files/folders on my drives, but I only have 3 file windows open at once most of the time, and am only displaying the item names and 'sizes'... no other columns. Nothing other than the 'move' itself is running at the time which could help explain the delay.
