General :: Can't Install .Deb File Or (package) / Dpkg: Command Not Found?

I'm using a new Distro and after installing it and randomly searching for help on websites on how to install a .Deb file using dpkg at the konsole/terminal it says Bash : dpkg: Command not found . how is this possible ? Do I have to know about all the packages in the package manager to install this. slight difference for me ... knowing what I have and knowing if I need Apr93-323? (whatever) installed first or not ? The only thing I know is that I have the Iso image installed ... which is my linux distro . Where to go from here? because I usually go to a website site to find Software to install ...if I need it .back to the basics

I want to install gcc on my Pyramid linux which is debian based. I downloaded gcc.deb. When I want to install this file, it gives me "dpkg command not found" error! I also get this error when I want to install other .deb files using dpkg command " dpkg -i finename.deb. I did some research and it seams that I should install package on my system, but package file is .deb file and I can't install .deb file! What should I do to solve the problem??? Should I install any thing on my system to install .deb files??

When i try installing anything i get errors, for example when i try to install somthing from ubuntu software center i get this.

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 and was happy because I finally got the screen resolution to be a good size, but now I can't update anything or even upgrade ubuntu.The message I get is

Runing 10.10 on USB.All was fine until a week ago then when trying to update I get that error.
Ive followed instructions in many threads to no avail. Heres what ive done and the result.

I want to rescue my system. After a faulty installation of linux-firmware_1.38_all.deb (subprocess /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1))
the system does not boot, even in recovery mode. Using a live cd, I downloaded the linux-firmware version I had previously, and try to install it with dpkg but I can't direct it to the directories I need:
dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.26_all.deb
Segmentation fault
dpkg -i --instdir=/mnt/sdb1 linux-firmware_1.26_all.deb
dpkg: unrecognized option '--instdir=/mnt/sdb1
I cannot get the correct parameters even by reading the man page. What am I missing?

find /var/spool/mqueue -group abc -exec rm -rf {} ;Using above command , I delete all the files belong to group abc.Now the problem i face is that the this command gives error that some files are missing . And this error occur because after creating list of files, it pass that list to rm -rf but till that time sendmail process queue and some of files disapper from /var/spool/mqueue.

I had edited the bashsr file wrongly in my ubuntu while trying to put a "export" command in bashsr for javac. Next when i am writing sudo , its saying :
Command 'sudo' is available in '/usr/bin/sudo'
The command could not be located because '/usr/bin' is not included in the PATH environment variable. sudo: command not found

I am trying to run a script called install.sh as follows: I get a jar file, and extract it using the command: unzip filename.jar -D path/to/files then I navigate to that directory where I extracted the files, and run the command: sh install.sh (where install.sh is one of the files that has been extracted in that directory using the above unzip command.) running this command gives me an error:'nstall.sh: command not found.' among other errors in the script ( from that portion of the script that should not even be executed, which is really weird). However, instead of unzipping the jar file, if I just copied the same install.sh file to that folder, and ran the 'sh install.sh' command, the script runs fine.

When I try to rpm --resign a package I get file not found error. Its not misstyping its not doing any gpg stuff and it does not ask for passphrase.I then rpmbuild -ba --sign X.specIt makes all the files and dies right where it signs the filesWhy i know its the .rpmmacros it never asks for a passphrase!If I build without --sign it builds 100% and exits normally.

I've been trying to install the gmagick extension for days now without success. I always end up with the same error message:
checking GraphicsMagick configuration program... configure: error: not found. Please provide a path to GraphicsMagick-config program.
ERROR: '/tmp/pear/temp/gmagick/configure --with-gmagick' failed
It's no wonder why I get this message as the location simply does not exists, its being unpacked to 'gmagick-1.0.3b2' and not 'gmagick'. I've tried to copy/paste the configuration file (config.m4?) to my manually created 'gmagick' directory within the temp folder but that didn't solve anything.

I have a script: `cd $FILEPATH && patch -i $TMPFILEA2$FILETMPPATH` Variable $FILESPATH is = /tmp/ardiff.AvUUGfOKa2/a/hello/ and Variable $TMPFILEA2$FILETMPPATH is = /tmp/ardiff.AvUUGfOKa2/b/hello/hello.c.patch. I don't know, why is it no working from script file, it write me message to terminal: ./ardiff.sh: line 242: patching: command not found.
But I have no PATCHING command there!!!! The paradox is, when I want to patch it from terminal (I write it to terminal by keyboard, it works).

I have just compiled a linux build of tests in my VirtualBox VM. When I run it, I get:

I did some research, and found it could permissions, missing libraries or different architecture. So I checked those:

I am trying to install the build-essential package on my new Jaunty install, but I seem to get 404 Not Found for all the repositories. I have tried main repositories, US ones and the ones recommended in Software Sources as being the best choice, but I get the same response. I can't install any packages because of this. Ubuntu Server Edition, 32bit, fresh install today (2011.07.07). Usually the first thing thing I do after a server install, I update, upgrade... then install Emacs to configure services. I can get to it from my other servers and PC's, have an internet connections from that server // so I know things should be okay...
I'm thinking maybe it's a repo problem in my source list... and I'm not sure what repo Emacs is from. I'd like to check this, before doing a reinstall on this. I had just added in the mounts & fstabs on my data RAID arays... Would be more work, but still not too far into it.
