I have 2 zombies that persist across reboots. How can I get rid of them and are they really a problem? They are: zeitgeist-datah under zeitgeist-daemon and killall underunity/sh. Both are waiting channel do_exit.

For instance, I see docky helpers for Zeitgeist. What do they do? How do I take advantage of them? Is there integration with nautilus elementary? If so how to take advantage of this?

Zeitgeist is sooo cool, but no documentation and links for providers at all . Searches retutn bug reports only.
Since installation (Christmas Day, I believe; had to reinstall, but that's irrelevant) I've been using Zeitgeist to log used applications/websites (via the Chrome extension)/songs (via the Rhythmbox extension) and Synapse to launch applications. However, recently Zeitgeist has seemingly stopped logging things. Nothing launched from Synapse or otherwise is saved to the activity journal. After two re-installations of both Synapse and Zeitgeist (including using the complete removal feature in Synaptic to erase all Zeitgeist related actions and applications) (as well as removing the ppa and reinstalling via Terminal), it is still no dice. I don't know what's causing the problem and am at a loss for what to do now.
When I launch Activity Journal it shows at the bottom bars when it was still working, which looks to take up the majority of the area above the word January, but when I roll back to look at what was launched the bars reset and there's nothing there. Also, it seems that it only logs things when I have activity journal open. When I close and open activity journal again it deletes whatever it saved.
I want to install the Zeitgeist Activity Journal on Fedora 12, there is a package zeitgeist-0.3.2-1.fc12 (noarch) in the repos and the description says its just the daemon without user interface/gui.
How can I use it on F12, there are many Screenshots on the Internet like this one:

Basically I Ran
killall -9 nautilus
in a (successful) attempt to get Banshee to properly locate my ipod but now i can't figure out how to properly reinstate nautilus.
I ran
nautilus
and
nautilus&
and these got nautilus working until I close the terminal.
My question is: is there a way to get nautilus to work properly again without having to either restart my computer or keep terminal open?
I'm attempting to use 'killall' to kill all mysql processes, however after using the command mysql processes are still alive. 'killall mysql' says no processes were killed, and while 'killall mysql_safe' gives no message there are still mysql processes alive afterwards.

Whenever I log in, restart, etc... There are no panels shown, I have to alt+F2, open terminal and run killall gnome-panels in order to have panels shown again. Is there a way to fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRegarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
Today I run OpenOffice.org extensions update and it freezed fter showing me that everything was successful.When i xkilled it it refused tolaunch without any problem indication.killall soffice.bin didn't report "No process found" after 1,2,3...20 times.So I tried killall soffice.bin -i

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed ActiveMQ, set up an init.d script and was able to start | stop | restart ActiveMQ from the init.d script. However, when I tried to use:
>sudo chkconfig --add activemq
upstart seemed not to like it. Having NO documentation on how to create a daemon that works with Upstart on the Ubuntu forums, I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why my init.d script doesn't convert.I'm using Ubuntu 10.x.x but this happens on 9.x.x also.

I'm trying to connect the Deluge GTK UI to the daemon running on the same system. This worked just fine previously, but for no apparent reason I can't connect now. I have Deluge set to autoconnect on startup, but it doesn't. If I open the connection manager, it says the daemon isn't running (which isn't true; I checked), and trying to start or connect to the daemon from there does nothing.I get the following errors from deluge:

View 2 Replies View Relatedi am trying to daemonize my (java) program on ubuntu. For that end i created a script based on /etc/init.d/skeleton script which obviously uses start-stop-daemon.
But I cannot make the process (java program) run on the background. it keeps running in the same terminal i start my daemon script. Trying --background option for start-stop-daemon does not help.
I set up MRTG on my ubuntu 10.10 using this link:[URL]...Now, i am trying to set it up so it refreshes every 5 minutes... I tried program scheduled task be entering /etc/init.d/mrtg start but it does not work... I also added the RunAsDaemon: Yes line to mrtg.cfg file but still nothing. It works fine from the terminal but not from the program...
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm creating a script that I want to run every time any user logs in (not only on the GUI, but also via SSH or via text terminal). The script will check if a daemon program is running (one per user or per session, haven't decided yet) and, if it isn't, will start it. I want this to be system-wide, not per-user. I thought about using /etc/profile (or creating a file in /etc/profile.d/) for CLI logins and /etc/X11/Xsession (same remark, Xsession.d) for GUI logins. My problem is that if the user uses a non-Bourne shell (e.g. TCSH) this won't work. Is there any initialization script that is run no matter what shell the user has?

I am trying to use my Apple Remote Controller that came with my iMac 4.1. I did some research and on the Ubuntu site it said that its possible with a application called Infrared Remote Controller. It detected from the hardrive which version I had etc but than a error message appeared on the bottom saying:
Warning: Remote control daemon not running.
How can I activate this? I included a screenshot!
I'm running an up-to-date installation of Lucid, and have come upon a little problem. It seems that applications are having trouble communicating with gnome-keyring-daemon.
When I connect to wireless networks -- even ones that are in the network manager -- it always asks me for a password.
Gwibber is crashing because it can't connect to the gnome keyring daemon.
And when I open the Passwords and Encryption Keys utility (on the Accessories menu), I get the error: "Couldn't communicate with key ring daemon."
I have verified that the daemon is starting up when I log in, that all of the appropriate keyring-related login items (certificate and key storage, secret service, & SSH key agent) are in place, and that the keyring works in other accounts on my machine. I have tried deleting my extant keyrings, but that has produced any success. And when I kill and restart the keyring daemon once I'm already logged in, the problem seems to abate.
I don't know if it matters, but for OS X compatibility purposes, I'm running as a UID under 1000.
I've just upgraded to 10.04. I love it. I've been running dark themes for a long time and this upgrade merged seamlessly with my setup.There is a nasty problem that I've noticed on only my desktop box (laptop is fine, also upgraded to 10.04). The dbus-daemon is hogging approximately 50% of my cpu cycles. Is there a way to limit this? I'm watching this via the System Monitor and the % CPU. My laptop registers its dbus-daemon % CPU as 0.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a test server on which I'd like to run up to 30 separate instances of a program as daemons, each running on a different IP address bound to the server. I've created a init script that takes an additional command line parameter - the last octet of the IP address. For example:

This would run instances of the program on IP addresses 192.168.1.40 and 192.168.1.41 respectively. But it's looking like this approach isn't doable if I wish to have any or all of these run at startup, as the links in the rcN.d directories can only link to the init script, not pass a parameter.
After upgrading from scratch to Ubuntu server 10.04 (previously 9.10), I noticed that my server was cast out of the Cheers bar , i.e., nobody knows its name anymore! (I have several Linux boxes on my home network).
Is there a new direction on how local networks are supposed to be configured? a new protocol? I know my problem is solved by simply installing avahi-daemon, but I wonder how other people are dealing with this issue.
I have installed transmission on a headless server. I am using transmission-daemon and connects to the webclient on the LAN. However from WAN I can't connect. I have forwarded port 9091 in my router and it connects with the server, but I get 403: Forbidden.

i have a lan:
m0n0wall router
ubuntu server (headless/no mouse/kbd/speakers, etc in attic)
4 desktop pc's
1 dlink dsm 520
my server is exactly that it has mysql/apache/mediatomb/php/cacti/phpmyadmin/samba/nfs/mpd) ignore all other service running on server & focus on MPD. all 4 desktop pc can connect to mpd and they can see the library. BUT they cannot play any track as it states there was an error with the audio device!i have tried all the examples on the web and none work what do i do? how do i configure it to use the LOCAL soundcard NOT the one that is not present in my server? all the examples are set to use the LOCAL(one on machine running MPD) sound card which does not work until i connect a speaker to my server which again is located in my attic and only has a pc speaker so this is NOT what i want. all 4 desktops do not have mpd installed as they do not need it. all media is stored on my server the gui's that connect to mpd do not have any configuration for a sound card
I have a 60GB partition with / and home on it. I logged on yesterday and it gave me a warning saying that I had only 1.9 GB of disk space left. I ignored it for a day and assumed that i had too many videos and pics.But the next day i had not added any files or downloaded any software but i had 0B left. I used the disk usage analyser and found that 33GBs came from /var/log. It was from two log files. syslog and daemon.log 16.5GB each!! I opened them up and i found that this line of text was repeated hnundreds of thousands of times.

I have installed Tomcat on one machine and MySQL on another. When I run tomcat on the same machine as Mysql and use 'localhost' in the jdbc url, I have no problem accessing mysql through jdbc. So my problem is accessing a remote mysql instance. I have no idea whether this is a problem at the operating system level i.e. allowing networked hosts, or whether it is something to do with MySQL. I have commented out bindaddress and, on this version, there is no 'skip-networking' line to comment out.
