Ubuntu :: Which Version Of Debian Was Used For 10.04
May 25, 2010
I just want to know which version of Debian was used for Ubuntu 10.04. I tried to find some sort of chart which displayed versioning between the two distributions, but I didn't have any luck.
I installed debian squeeze on an old computer that I found. (Pentium 4 3.2GHz HT) I installed from the i386 version, but now the uname command shows that its an i686. I don't find many packages that I need using apt-get. Do I need to compile each package I need from source or use dpkg to install the deb of an i386 version?
Can I use the i386 version on this computer rather than the i686 version? Will it cause a signifncant performance decreaes? (I use this computer to mostly do some reading and writing and file storage, no gaming etc.) How do I force the installer to use the i386 version?
Sometimes a kernel image seems to have the same version as the backported kernel image, for example: linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64
I've just install debian squeeze version, or the testing one, but I am not really happy with it. Is not listening me all the time. If I install the debian stable I don't have internet connection. Is it possible to update the kernel somehow using the testing version?
When I installed Debian 6.0.1 (Squeeze) I decided not to install GRUB as I already had a GRUB2 set up from Ubuntu working fine. Now I find my self using Debian more and more and would like to be able to update Debian (in GRUB) without having to go into Ubuntu to update GRUB.
My question is what version of GRUB does Debian come pre-set with? Do I need to go into the synaptic and download GRUB2?
Ever since i found out that there was something called cinepaint i've tried to install it. On their website it says that the debian version currently isn't stable, and therefore not released. I've tried their own CVS file, and costum files. Nothing so far works.
I want to run Debian as a live version from my USB flash drive. Does this provide the same amount of security from hackers as installing Debian as the only OS on my netbook. Windows ce would still be on my netbook?
I did an "aptitude update && aptitude upgrade" in the terminal, and I get the following packages which want to update:
The following NEW packages will be installed:
liblzma2{a} xz-utils{a} The following packages will be upgraded: dpkg libsgutils2-2 libvlc2 libvlccore2 libvte-common libvte9 mozilla-plugin-vlc vlc vlc-data vlc-nox vlc-plugin-pulse
[code]...
I usually just break out of this with Ctrl+c, and now every time I try to update my system, I run into this. What should I do?
how to get the newest Java Version. My Debian has got Java 1.50.3 as Default. I am running Debian Kernel vers:2.6.26-2-686 on a GA-D510UD Mainboard. I tried to install it with apt-get but it just says that it could not find java. I found a packet at Linux & ebian wiki, but i dont know how to extract it into the root Filesystem /. If i just copy it there Debian tells me thati havent got the permission.
I've been having several serious problems with the ancient version of glade included in squeeze. Now it is entirely unusable. I'm convinced the only way to fix this rediculous mess is to install a newer version. Guess what? testing and unstable have the exact same version as squeeze. The experimental one can't be installed because out of the 20 or so packages it needs installed to run 18 are missing. Is there a half-decent repository where I can get a new-ish version of glade? Try compiling from source and tada: My "intltool" is too old whatever that is.
I need to install a old version of PHP... the old stable version PHP 5.2.17.Is it possible? When I use the command line "apt-get install php5", it installs the current stable version PHP 5.3.6. how to install a old version of PHP?
After new installation i can not get USB to work properly, if i insert a usb stick it will not show only if i change ports several times it will show, and will be invisible in dev/tty
I got last night debian 5 stable, but it has an older version of kernel, I think 2.6.26, which doesn't have my network card drivers. I tried to install myself the kernel, but I a newbie in linux, so something failed and I give up until next time. Is this version: [URL] a safer one for a desktop computer, daily usage? How to I know it has the latest kernel?
I have been searching the forum regarding info about the debian testing going into freeze, but cannot find specific info regarding some of the facts. I understand that after some time the testing version (squeeze currently) goes into "freeze" before it becomes the new stable. Now, what does freeze actually mean? Currently I'm running Squeeze, and updating as the update software suggests, and since first install, I got a new kernel image, some updates to applications I use etc etc. So, when testing goes into freeze, all updates are stopped and only bugfixes are released, am I right? But I'm curious about one thing, for example I have gnome DE with let's say network manager applet 0.8.
So when testing is done with freeze and becomes the new stable - does it include current versions of kernel and programs that were actual during freeze? Will I have network manager applet 0.8 after freeze is gone to stable, or will it revert to... dunnno 0.7.6 version? At this time I have kernel version 2.6.32-5-686 , when I first installed it was 2.6.32-3-686 , so when going into freeze then stable kernel won't be downgraded, right? Btw I'm not using Sid's repositories. Well I least I think I'm not, the sources.list doesn't include sid's repos... Well sid non-free is there.
I'm on gentoo trying to emerge a kernel 2.4, i have the sources already compiled butt i have problems with init. So, i guess is better to download an old version of debian, one with the kernel 2.4. I nee to load an old module, compiled for a 2.2 kernel, and i don't have the sources. So, maybe with a 2.4 kernel i can. Where i can find a precompiled system with a 2.4 kernel, and from the i go on.
I want to use Remastersys Backup, but their webpage [url] says that it only works with Grub-legacy, not with Grub-2 (Grub-pc).
What I currently have is Grub-2, and the question is can I safely switch from that to legacy, i.e., with a simple synaptic remove and install?
The Remastersys package actually wants to install, also in synaptic, the dummy package "grub"; so should I allow it to take care of the switch, or do I do it myself as above?
I've read quite a few threads on how to change the GCC version to 4.3 from 4.4 but when i do it tries to tell me that it cannot even compile the gcc version check or something similar. Also the kernel-source is 196.x.x even though the latest driver is 256.x.x so will compiling it make a difference since it's using an older version of the kernel source, i've checked in sid and apparently it's using the same package which is surprising. The main reason why i'm going to try to upgrade from 196.x.x is because that release has frequently and does frequently stay in the higher gpu clock for no reason and also runs ~10-20*C hotter than 256 does and for me that's the difference between 65*C max and 85*C max which is a very noticeable difference.

I'm currently trying to make my version of the LMDE 2 (based on Debian), but unfortunately, a lot of HOW-TO on this topic, is based on the remastersys, and the main site (and repository) is not available any more. The only one I could find is ubuntu build and they won't work on LMDE because it's Debian based. I also have tried tools like "systemback" - made a 4GB iso image file, and had few options to customize, and "bootcd" package, who had even less options (received a 2GB iso).
So, what I want:
Base system: LMDE 2 + official updates + some new software (like pinta, openshot, deluge etc.) + some removed software + fresh kernel -> compress it all and make an iso image file with option to load in LiveCD/USB mode and also install on HDD. I have made all the chain except "last iso part".
My wireless works without issue with network manager. However I notice that it seems to be a gui only app. That is, when I stop the display manager my laptop loses internet connectivity. The NetworkManager service is still running. Is there a commandline method of using the NetworkManager settings to start the wireless connetion?
I have installed Openshot Video editor, then it did not work (due to some python bindings I guess) so I uninstalled it. After that everything seems to start failing including, running aptitude and apt-get. Here is a message when I try to run apt-get from command line (sudo apt-get install -f)
