I was just looking around and did a tail on my syslog and some strange entries came up:

I'm a Verizon customer in Maryland, USA running Linux at my home and I don't understand why named is looking at servers in France and Saudi Arabia. Am I just being paranoid?
CentOS 5.6 Server patched to latest, multiple name-based apache virtual hosts. SELinux OFF Everything was working fine until the other day. I've been making quite a lot of changes so it may well be something I've done, but I can't find out what! Last night I got the following in my logwatch : -
Requests with error response codes

/admin/pma/scripts/setup.php: 1 Time(s)

The problem is that NONE of my logs, secure, httpd, messages, NONE of them, show any trace of these hacking attempts. They used to show up in secure and apache error logs, but no longer.
/media has 2 similar entries for my external hard drive after I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. One reads "My Book" and the other "My Book_". "My Book" is owned by root and I can't access it. Unfortunately all my shortcuts and programs previously linked to this hard drive are complaining they don't have permission to access the drive (mediatomb and deluge, mostly).
How can I get rid of the extra "My Book_" and reclaim "My Book"?
I guess with major changes to syslog-ng, php-syslog going to licensing cost, and major overhaul to the syslog plugin with cacti - alot of documention was either disjointed, outdated or I just couldn't find it.this was performed on an 11.04 Ubuntu Server tall. I already had Cacti up and running and just needed to make it also a syslog collector. This guide assumes you already have mysql running, and cacti is already in place. If something looks wrong - please correct me. I am doing this from memory - trying to remember what all I had to do, and not a super admin.Required ubuntu install packages:libdbd-mysql syslog-ngcacti install packages:[URL]
Stop syslog-ng if you want. Changes should not take effect until you restart it.Should save the default syslog-ng configuration if you want to be safe. Below is the absolute minimum you need to get this working.Configuration on ubuntu is location in /etc/syslog/syslog-ng.conf Also make sure you fill in the proper username and password for mysql.
Code:
@version: 3.1
#Bare minimum syslog-ng configuration

I'm trying to setup my interfaces along side GNS3 for study purposes, and came across a ..... vid saying to try this (my current config)

I'm praying for some crappy syntax error, also in Network Connections... its now blank, the original auto eth0 setup is missing
I am looking for an open source syslog server which accumulate the each and every log of Windows, Solaris, Linux and network devices. Currently I am using Syslog-ng which is not fulfiling my requirement in Windows clients, as I need the logs of every action which user performed after logon.
View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to stream media securely over the internet from my desktop to my laptop.
I have a ton of movie and tv shows on my hard drive and instead of carrying around a backup of them on an external drive, I'd like to be able to type in a web address to view a list of files available to just stream.
trying to replace syslog with syslog-ng. When I:
yum erase syslog,
wants to remove everything else that (presumably) has syslog as a dependency. how do I replace the dependency on syslog with a dependency on syslog-ng?
I have been trying to find something that does this for some time now and discussions on IRC didn't turn up anything usefull - thats why this post for a prolonged discussion I have Ubuntu Server 10.4 installed (no X) and am trying to use it as an upnp media renderer. I would like to be able to playback their music on the servers soundcard from various devices. Thus it would be nice to have the ubuntu server expose an upnp media-renderer which one can use as an output device.
Is there a suggestion on which software to use? What I already have working is an upnp media-server (mediatomb) with ampache, but this isn't really what I'd like since I don't have as much disk-space on the server as I have on the various computers.
I noticed in my system that my root partition is getting full. I found a lot of old compacted syslogfiles. Had a look at etc/sysconfig editor eg cron but could not find a setting which allows to delete files older than a month. Where and how could I influence this ? I deleted manually all syslog files older than a month. Approx 6GB
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a temporary media center because the one I was using died. The computer I have to work with is a crappy old computer and its only purpose is going to be a middle man between a server I have for movie storage, and my TV. I don't want to spend any money right now because I'm working on building a MythTV system at home, so until then I'm trying to setup this temporary solution. The computer I have to work with is a Dell Optiplex GX150, everything stock.
I'm looking for a distro that is light enough to run on this machine without any problems (about a 1 gighz processor and a 1/2 a gig of ram), can display movies just fine, and must be able to support 1080 resolution. I've tried Mint 10, but that's way too top heavy, as is Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04. I also tried gOS which displayed the resolution just fine, but was WAY too resource intense for this machine... Just clicking on the menu took 5-10 seconds same as with Mint.
setup a media server in Linux which streams video over the internet? Is it easy to do this? I want a server that will actually encode video in real time to allow it to stream over sometimes slow or unreliable networks. Basically, I want a server that works on the internet. I have a directory with a bunch of video files, and want to make this accessible to myself remotely. For other situations, I found great and useful software (such as the PS3 media server). I'd like to find something equally as useful for streaming video over the internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on Red Hat Linux since last six months and learning it steps by steps. like configurating ftp server,NSF ,DNS and then email server. I want to learn squid server but technically before going into it what you suggest me that may I first learn to configure Linux as a router,Firewall machine or do IP masquerading on a server. Because all these things are directly or indirectly involve in squid. So guide me because going to start squid i may understand Linux IP table ,how to add entries in it,how to delete entries ,I think you understand my point which i want to ask for guidence.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.
Ubuntu10.10.i want a media player with all media codecs.it should able to play all formats of videos and audios so please suggest me a media player.(i used km player in windows i want a media player like that)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I was wondering if this can be done, or if these features have yet, if ever, to be implemented.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.
Is there a way to tail a log file and send each line as a syslog event to a remote server?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wrote a script which will run in ubuntu box and will display in tty1, without loading the gdm. The problem is when I plugged in a usb drive it will cause some messages to be printed into the current tty user logged in.
Like : [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
This is really disturbing when a user is running the script. Is there anyway that I can direct all the messages to some other tty which I don't use.
I don't know what I have done this time, but on my desktop I have the cube effect, which is working fine. But now when I minimize a page it goes to the opposite end of the taskbar instead of to the workspaces I have.Using Ubuntu 10.04. Not sure if I have explained this properly. Also when I flip the cube to a clean desktop and open a new browser, it doesn't open on that side of cube , but reverts to original workspace and opens in a new tab there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedDecided to try Meerkat. Looks great from the USB. With Lucid installed on Dell Optiplex with Windows XP - worked out ok.Installed Maverick Meerkat from USB and now no OS at all. I only get a prompt to re-try booting or to enter set-up.I installed Meerkat to the existing Lucid partitions, a / and /home partition, but I'm not even getting as far as grub-menu at boot.In the first attempt the installer installed grub to sda, (the hdd), and that didn't work, so I tried re-installing with a separate /boot, (sda7), partition, and still no love.
One of the problems is that on the Dell there is a /dell utility partition at the beginning of the disk, so I can't really move that to put a /boot partition at the beginning.Oddly, Lucid had no such problem. Lucid installed and recognised Windows XP, but when I try the same install procedure with Meerkat I draw a blank.
I was checking my syslog.conf file recently and it seems that it is an empty file >_> it shouldn't be correct?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 60GB partition with / and home on it. I logged on yesterday and it gave me a warning saying that I had only 1.9 GB of disk space left. I ignored it for a day and assumed that i had too many videos and pics. But the next day i had not added any files or downloaded any software but i had 0B left. I used the disk usage analyser and found that 33GBs came from /var/log. It was from two log files. syslog and daemon.log 16.5GB each!! I opened them up and i found that this line of text was repeated hnundreds of thousands of times.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThere was an useful discussion on "how to stop logging cron to syslog". The useful answer is to update the line targeting syslog in /etc/syslog.conf to say something like:
Code:
*.*;auth,authpriv.none,mail.none,cron.none -/var/log/syslog
the significant part being that cron.none means that cron will not log to syslog.
There was discussion about whether this was a good thing to do, but omitted to suggest that adding/ uncommenting the following line would mean that no information would be lost but that syslog would be less cluttered as a source of monitoring info:
Code:
cron.* -/var/log/cron.log
You've still got all your cron-related log items available in cron.log if and when you need them. To make the new /etc/syslog.conf lines effective you should also, with root privileges:
Code:
touch /var/log/cron.log
chown syslog:adm /var/log/cron.log
and restart syslog. In my case:
Code:
/etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
I have a postfix mailserver that works fine except for the logrotate.
syslog.conf
mail.* -/var/log/mail.log
logrotate.conf
/var/log/mail.log {
[Code]....
So when cron does the logrotate, there is a new logfile but its empty. After i restart the syslogd it gets back to its normal logging.
What am i missing? All this works with CentOS, why is Ubuntu such a pain...
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid lynx).
It was OK after some of kernel updates (I guess):
It doesn't auto mount CD/DVD when I insert them.
When I insert CD/DVD system writes this in "syslog":
Code:
And when I try to mount it manually it writes:
Code:
when I reboot system it works correctly again!
I made ISO images of some of DVDs in a windows box and transfered them in my ubuntu and tried to mount them and there were no problem with ISO images! the problem is with the physical CD/DVD !
