Software :: Remove Thunderbird's Faulty Addresses?
May 15, 2010I would like to remove from the Thunderbird every faulty email message that it keeps in his "memory". For example if accidentally I send an email to faulty@email.com every time i press f to the To: field the faulty@email.com entry appears.
Is it possible somehow to remove these email addresses?
Ubuntu Security :: Faster Aircrack Packet Collecting?
Jul 8, 2010I've just started learning how to use kismet and aircrack. I'm sniffing my own network to see how vulnerable it is. I'm using aireplay to inject packets, but the number of packets per second in airodump is only about 30 to 50. Is there something that can speed this up a little more? Shouldn't it be able to go faster than this? It's going to take forever to collect at least 300,000 IVs for a 64 WEP key let alone the amount needed for 128 WEP.
wireless card intel iwl3945. Everything works great except for the extremely slow speed of gathering IVs. Also, how can I monitor my network? If someone was using aircrack on me and sending packets, how could I observe that? What should I Google?
Hardware :: Collecting Information For Use In A Kernel Compile?
May 14, 2010I would like to gather as much system information I can for my box so I can get a better understanding of what needs to be enabled in the kernel. Other than the lspci, lshw output, and knowledge of certain devices connected, does anyone have any other tips they could present me with? Unfortunately, I don't have access to the machine in interests manuals, and I know next to nothing about hardware.

Nov 30, 2010I have a simple scripting question. I am trying to list all files that have been modified in the last day and then collect metadata on those files. This command is going to be run on a number of nodes via ssh so I would like to append the hostname to start of each line (the below example has blade1 as the hostname). As you can see the loop is splitting the ls command out onto a separate line for each value. What I need to do is keep the `ls -ld` output all on one line and have the hostname echoed in front of each line.

Aug 26, 2010Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.
Software :: Importing Thunderbird Settings From Portable Apps Thunderbird
Sep 13, 2010I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?
Ubuntu :: (GNOME) Thunderbird For Two Users - "Thunderbird Is Already Running But Is Not Responding"

My problem is (after substantial searching) that I need to have both users ('juliusz' and 'sarah') running Thunderbird but with the same profile (settings, email, accounts etc. preferably of 'juliusz'). The only results on the internet are share Thunderbird between Windows and Ubuntu.
I have two users juliusz and sarah. I need either of them to have the same profile, always in synch whenever they logon to own account. When I tried to edit sarah's /home/sarah/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.ini by inserting: Path=/home/juliusz/.mozilla-thunderbird/xxxxxxx.default after i run Thunderbird for 'sarah' I get message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." I checked with "ps aux" there is no Thunderbird running in sarah's session. There is no Thunderbird running in juliusz's session when I reloged to juliusz.

I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.

May 28, 2010I am having an issue on my server where I can't access certain ip's erratically. These addresses could previously connect to us.I think it may be related to getting rootkitted. I know the risks in not reinstalling but we are not able to install yet at this point. I cleaned out shv4 and shv5 from the os and setup tripwire. The client can't ping the server and likewise back.From my personal computer they both respond to pings.The server is running denyhosts but that is about it in-terms of security.I can't find anyhting anywhere... No ipchains present, nothing in host.deny, subnet is 255.255.255.0.I'm really at a loss so I'm looking for some direction
I know someone is going to tell me that I have to assume all my files are compromised and i should reinstall; I did md5 checks on alot of files and there is no data on here that shouldnt get out and I check for stuff running that shouldn't be daily.The server is 10.04 server. Ubuntu Networking :: Getting 2 Different MAC Addresses For Same Adapter
Jan 12, 2011I am running a dual boot PC, Ubuntu 10.10 & Win7. I do sticky static IPs on my local network, but it doesn't work cause the Ethernet adapter gets a different MAC address in Windows 7 (EF:9F:E9:F7:F7:F7) than it shows for Ubuntu 10.10 (00:13:74:00:5C:3. I am not sure if this is a Windows problem or something up with Ubuntu. The card is an on-board Atheros L2 fast Ethernet adapter. I have tried updating the drivers in Windows & nothing is working.

Jan 27, 2010I have run into a problem that I've tracked down to being a conflict between the "Upstart" init system, and how it handles multiple (alias) IP addresses per physical interface. The summary of the problem is that the interfaces are being configured in the background in parallel with the starting of daemons. One "feature" of this (apparently intended for pluggable devices that would add or remove an interface) is that the network daemons are restarted each time an interface is added (and presumably deleted). But this is a disaster when applied to alias IP addresses.
I first saw the effects of this when during booting Ubuntu Server, the screen showed a message about OpenSSH daemon being restarted ... several times a few seconds apart each. At the time I didn't know what was causing that, but didn't worry because it ultimately was running when I needed it.
But now that I am deploying these servers for specific duty with many IP addresses per system (per network interface), the symptoms are becoming serious, and I need a solution.
1. The IP addresses are coming online too slowly. Apparently the time it takes to restart each daemon is being added to each address being configured.
2. It appears to be disrupting some daemons sometimes. Occaisionally, some daemon just ends up being hung somewhere, or dies. Too many restarts.
3. Sometimes few or even no alias addresses get configured. This might be due to a daemon getting hung, and the whole sequence just not finishing.
4. The "nsd" name server as packaged by Ubuntu doesn't deal well with this at all. It needs all its IP addresses to be up when it starts, or else it won't start. The Ubuntu package of it doesn't including any if-up script at all, although I'm not sure that would do any good.
What I need is a way to configure all these alias IP addresses so they are all configured immediately when the point in time is reached to bring up network interfaces for the first time. These are all static, and all are aliases on ethernet NIC cards plugged into PCIe cards, or integrated in the mainboard. None of them are pluggables. I did run a manual test of "ifconfig" in a loop configuring 2540 alias IP address on eth0 and it only took 2 seconds (no if-up triggers or daemon restarts here). So I know it's fast if nothing else is done between these steps.
Even for pluggable physical interfaces, I see no reason to even try to step through every alias (if it has aliases) with a daemon restart. If an alias IP address is added on later, then I can understand doing it. But if you have a list of 100 aliases for a physical interface, they really should all be done ... or at least attempted ... at once, and do any triggers needed after that.
So, how can I configure or modify Ubuntu Server 9.10 to do that?
I have each alias listed in the "/etc/network/interfaces" file with a separate "auto" and "iface" section for each one, with sequential sub-interface numbers appended to the interface name. I tried it without those sections (e.g. just "address" and other items in sequence) and that prevents the system from even coming up (bootable CD to the rescue to undo that). At least cntrl-alt-del did reboot it.
I tried to attach the /etc/network/interfaces file, but I don't know if it worked because I see no confirmations about it. if it didn't attach and you need to see it, say so, and I'll just paste it in a followup.
Ubuntu :: Can Ping IP Addresses Of Sites But Cannot Browse
Feb 16, 2010I can ping IP addresses of sites, say 209.85.229.99 (google.com), but I cannot ping google.com, nor browse it. Same thing for every alphabetic address and hence in practice I have no internet on my laptop. In windows, I'd just flush DNS but I don't know what to do in Ubuntu. I am using WICD.

I have tended to use wicd to set static IP addresses because Network Manager didn't always perform as I thought it should. Now that I have installed 10.04 I cannot see how to set static addresses using Network Manager so I installed wicd, and disabled Network Manager. After setting the address with wicd it shows that the computer is connected to the internet however I cannot get internet access, though I can network with my other computers. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times just to check that I haven't been careless but the results are still the same.

Jan 28, 2011In order to get internet access at my school I have to log into a vpn. No other addresses can be accessed before login. With XP the login is authenticated through the browser (IE and Firefox supported) and run by a juniper network connect applet.
Now when I try to do this in firefox in Ubuntu it tells me that I'm not allowed to login. So I started doing a little research and found out that I should be able to authenticate with VPNC. Trouble is I can't get internet to install anything. Which means I have to download the packages in XP and reboot into Ubuntu. And every time I hit a snag I have to reboot into XP to look up what I need to do. So what I'm wondering is if there is some work around that will get me logged in (maybe through the browser authentication?) so that I can work through issues in one os instead of two?

Feb 10, 2010Is it possible to configure two IP addresses using one NIC? I'm implementing a VPN server on network 192.168.1.0, ultimately to be accessed over the Internet and through an ADSL router with port-forwarding to the server. Right now I'd like to test it on the LAN, but with the VPN client and server both on the 192.168.1.0 network, that test would not be be valid.
If I had a spare NIC I could put the server on both the 192.168.1.0 network and, say, a 10.0.0.0 network, configure the client on 10.0.0.0 and test. Not having a spare NIC, I'm wondering if it is possible to configure the server with two IP addressese NIC.Virtualising hosts are able to do something similar when running guests with NICs in bridged mode. Log files show they switch eth0 into promiscuouse.In case it matters the server OS is Slackware 13.0.
