View 1 RepliesBoth Banshee and Rhythmbox crash, leaving a segmentation fault in the terminal, after playing a song for less than a second. I do manage to get some sound before they crash. This problem seems to have begun only a couple of days ago after doing an update. Unfortunately I was playing playing around with moving my music collection to an NFS share around the same time as the update so I can't be sure which action it was that broke music playback.
Because both Banshee and Rhythymbox are affected and showing identical behaviour I think the problem is gstreamer. Reinstalling everything I could find in synaptic related to gstreamer had no effect.
Some general information:
- My music collection is in FLAC but other formats seem to cause the same behaviour.
- Music from an NFS share or my external USB drive causes the same behaviour
- VLC plays music from my NFS share without any problems
- Removing ubuntu-one (as suggested in some posts) did not help
- I'm using Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 x86
I've had no luck searching the interwebs for help thus far. Does anyone have any ideas?

A while ago, when I was using Maverick, Firefox started to crash randomly and led to kernel panics.
So I upgraded to Natty (clean install) and Firefox there too crashed.
Then I was getting graphics and make problems.
Today I tried to install Fedora 15. It first boots to a Live desktop that warned me that my hard drive had 65000+ bad sectors. Sixty-five thousand.
So I got a new one. A WD Scorpio Black, 750GB 7200RPM with Advanced Format.
Again I boot into Fedora 15. OK, no bad sectors. I tried to run Disk Utility Self Tests but it constantly crashed. Fedora warns you about this.
In the Live session, I opened Firefox. It also crashed just like back in Ubuntu. Then the screen flashes black and got warnings after warnings that a kernel module has crashed.
So I took out my old Maverick installation CD and first tried a Live session. However, Disk Utility told me that SMART is not supported while on Fedora, it was.
So I tried to install. But soon after that, I got a warning that the installer has crashed because a file copied to the disk did not match the file on CD. Right now I am in the Maverick Live session.
just installed Fedora 13 on a pentium 4 laptop by Dell, with 1 Gb RAM.
As I opt for Compiz, it cannot start, there is a black pop up saying Crash, and some numbers follow. How can this be fixed?
Should I install KDE?
Is there an update of software?
I can opt for Compiz but worry that it will be faulty. That is the second attempt also produced the crash warning pop up but gave me the option of keeping it or going back after about twenty seconds, with the figures on the screen. I played it safe. Also can I try it, and manually go back?
Error report shows Compiz killed by Signal 11 SIGSEGV, this was added after post 9.
Every time I have Compiz activated and I try to watch a video full screen using VLC Player, or even Movie player, the player crashes. When I turn Compiz off, all is fine. How can I fix this?

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
Today (13.1.2010) On my fedora 12 I've gotan popup, tah secutity updates are available for downloading etc... I've agreed and clicket install. After installation the computer had to be rebooted and after the reboot ... compiz stopped work! (this happens on my desktop computer and my laptop too! )

This issue have to be connected with these updates (I've got the same issue on my laptop and desktop computer)
When I launch the program it starts and then almost immediately trashes itself. I am not a power user so I don't know where to look to solve this problem. The account has been working since October so it's unlikely a provider problem.

I have a new UEC (Ubuntu 9.10) server up and running. I'm running a self contained solution so the cluster and node are on the same machine. I know this isn't ideal but I only have one server. I followed https:[url]... and https:[url].... When I try to run a VM (Ubuntu 9.10 amd64) image it will go from pending to shut-down to terminated. I know others have had this problem but I haven't see any solutions. I'm hoping there might be one out there that I've missed. I'm running on an AMD 64-bit quad core with 8GB DDR3 RAM.I am not seeing any errors in the logs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot setup with two hard drives. Windows 7 is running on my primary drive with Ubuntu 10.04 on the secondary drive. I installed GRUB 2 to the secondary hard drive, and I'm booting from that. Everything seems to be working well with one problem. Every time I shut down from Ubuntu and tell it to load Windows (it doesn't matter if it's a reboot or power off/on), Windows locks up during its boot. If I power the laptop off and back on, I can select and load into Windows just fine. It just takes two attempts EVERY time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedUnder 8.04 lts moving a file to Trash under Gnome/Nautilus resulted in the file being moved to the Trash directory, from where I could then delete it. It was an extra layer of protection against mistakes.
Now when I right click on a file and choose move to Trash, it deletes immediately without the protection.
I see no way to turn it back on. Is this a change in the way Nautilus is meant to work, or is there a switch someplace to put it back?
On a fresh install of the Meerkat release candidate, I've installed the latest VirtualBox (3.2.8-64453, not open source version). When I run it, I get a user-agreement notice box as expected.
But, (1) sometimes immediately thereafter, or if not, then (2) as soon as I move the mouse pointer or (3) after I use the PageDown key to get to the bottom of the agreement text and use a key combination for "I agree," my Ubuntu user session crashes and I have to log in again.
The only other weird symptom I'm having is that I cannot set visual effects to anything but "None" (if I attempt to, I get an alert "The Composite extension is not available").
Perhaps there's a video-related problem underlying both issues, i.e., the X server is failing in both cases?
I really can't say what I did that may have triggered this problem. I've been trying to setup remote access through SSH but that's about it. Haven't changed any settings in a bit though. I downloaded Konsole and it closes immediately as well.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
Whenever I access F-Spot, it appears and the, almost immediately, disappears.

When I choose to hibernate, the computer starts to do so, and powers off, and almost immediately it wakes up and comes back to the locked screen. I am using 32 bit version. Hibernate used to work properly on Hardy. I checked that my swap space is more than twice my RAM size.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx but now getting irritated by a bug or problem (I'm not sure whether it's a bug) in Gnome-panels. The problem is whenever I add a new panel in Gnome Desktop, the new panel doesn't appears on screen and needs to be re-logon to appear. It seems a known issue when I checked for the same at Launchpad, but it existed in betas.
I found this trouble since I have made a clean install of Lucid but thought it'll be fixed in any of the updates, but it didn't solved even after the most recent update I made this morning. I wanted to report this bug but didn't knew how to file bug for gnome-panels as there's no option like 'Report a problem' for gnome panels.
I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64-bit) server edition on a box here (a few times now), and each time I attempt to boot post-install, I get RAID errors. The box has 4 hard drives in it, and I've disabled the hardware RAID in BIOS because I couldn't seem to get that to work.During the installation, I opted to handle partitioning manually. One set of hard drives has two partitions: one for swap, and one for /. When all is said and done, I end up with three RAID 1 mirrors: one for swap (/dev/md0), one mounted at / (/dev/md1), and one mounted at /srv (/dev/md1).

I run into a new kind of problem with Ubuntu 10.4 LTS. The unlock screen dialog that asks for your password when resuming from the screensaver does not show up immediately. Moving the mouse, typing stuff. It does not seem to be a pure display problem, since typing the password does not seem to do the trick. After a while (about 15 seconds), it shows up, though.

This is an extremely weird issue that I can't find any help with on Google. It is minor but extremely annoying.
When I type in a linux command in the terminal, (e.g. "ls -la"), and then press enter, the cursor goes to the next line and just sits there, as if its processing some long command.
If I press enter again, I see the ls output as well as my prompt twice. It's like the terminal window isn't auto-scrolling, but I've also seen this happen when there wasnt even enough text in the console screen to warrant a scrollbar. Has anyone seen this before and know what I need to do? I hope what I'm asking about makes sense.

I am looking for a way to permanently delete files immediately - no trash, no taking up space but a command to make a file immediately gone. I have a USB flash drive and it has a hidden .trash file on it that builds-up until I have no more room on the flash drive - all space taken up by deleted files. I need a command that bypasses the trash and immediately deletes a file for good making space available.
