Ubuntu :: Slow To Load In Nautilus - Speeding Up?

Folders with large collections of photos are incredibly slow to load in Nautilus. Sometimes Nautilus goes grey and never recovers. I've tried increasing the size of the thumbs cache but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Ubuntu's Nautilus is also several times slower than Fedora on the same computer and same folders (Multiple OS). I've gotten so that I mainly use Thunar, which loads the same folders in a fraction of a second, though Thunar comes with its own limitations. Is there a way, yet, to make Nautilus behave like Thunar.

I have an Acer Aspire One A110 netbook. Presently, it runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8. The A110 is an early model with a slow SSD (solid state drive). Firefox was slow and often paused (froze for a moment). I tried several hacks in the Ubuntu forums and elsewhere to speed up Firefox. Some were not effective at all, some were very technical and at least one produced instability. I tried Google Chrome, which started out fast but turned slow. Emptying browser caches did not fix my problems.
I thought the slow disk must be the problem and moved the browser cache to a dedicated SDHC card. I've since been running with a dedicated cache for a month or two now, have never emptied the cache and Firefox still runs fast. I mean fast enough that it doesn't slow down my browsing (I'm not trying to set world speed records).
The A110 has two SD slots. I have a 16 GB SDHC card in the 'Storage Expansion', which is my data disk. The second is a card reader slot. I didn't want to mess with my data disk. I bought a fast (Transcend, Class 6)
4 GB SDHC, put that in the card reader slot and set up my Firefox cache there:
1. Type about:config in the Firefox address bar.
2. Tell Firefox where your new cache is. For me:browser.cache.disk.enable true.
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory /media/BD2C-8BD5/firefox (I created a directory /firefox on the card)
3. Tell Firefox to increase the size of the cache: browser.cache.disk.capacity 512000 (formerly 51200)
4. Check the cache is enabled, type about:cache in the Firefox address bar. For me it returns: /media/BD2C-8BD5/firefox/Cache
To get the name of the cache directory easily and accurately, open this directory with the File Browser, toggle to a text-based location bar and there it is. Cheap SD cards can be purchased on feebay. Select carefully, they're not all fakes. SDHC Class 6 is fine for a browser cache, handling small blocks of data. Cards only slow down when you do a massive file transfer. 2GB or 1GB should be adequate but fast and small cards are rare. Other memory cards can be used of course, but speeds vary between different technologies.

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! The GUI on nautilus is painfully slow to work with. Every time I drag and drop a file I have to wait for the nautilus to slowly shade the whole file window . . . . . . . before it stops and lets me drop the file. I searched for a way to turn off this "animation", but found nothing.
I've tried pcman, but it wouldn't open my files. Thunar insists on copying files instead of just moving them.

I use sftp in nautilus to transfert file to my server but it's very slow. For example for tthe same file to the same IP with nautilus i upload at 1.8Mb/s adn with Filezilla I upload at 8.0mb/s.

With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.

I have been using ubuntu for a while and i like it a lot, im a web developer and i have windows xp installed in virtual box, i moved completely to linux and just use windows to test in ie, it had been a while since i didnt use windows and i had to use in the last few days and noticed how much faster it is, the thing that bothered me the most is when opening folders in the desktop or the recycle bin, in windows its instant, in ubuntu opening a folder takes a long time to open nautilus, is this normal or is my installation bad, any comments are appreciated, i dont want to abandon ubuntu, i really like it but it really bothers me that nautilus is so slow to open.

HiI still have a issue where nautilus occasionally wont show my home folder's contents.
(it has no images or videos or music in the home folder directly (only in sub-folders), only other folders and text files, incl dot files for settings)
I have to reboot to get it to work.
Sometimes it does it right after a reboot, a 2nd reboot then allows nautilus to see contents of the home folder.

I have been using Karmic as a tool to extract important data from Windows Operating Systems where say viruses have necessitated a complete reinstall. I run the Karmic install disk and use the 'try before installing'option. It works well and I am able to 'rescue' anything I want by saving to a USB drive.Problem is that Karmic does take a relatively long time to load on a 'slow' PC.Does anyone have any suggestions on a 'slimmed down' Ubuntu that could be used in the same way which will load up quickly ?In most circumstances all I want to do is mount the C Drive of the stuffed PC and copy files to an external USB drive.

Since I upgraded to Maverick, every now and then (maybe once an hour) my system becomes very slow for about half a minute. The mouse cursor reacts only very slowly and also applications freeze for for some time.
This happens without the CPU being on full load or the hard disk being active.
I made a clean ubuntu installation on a new hard drive a week ago, but the problem persists.
I have a Thinkpad R400 with an Intel GMA 4500 graphics card an an Intel T5670 Core 2 Duo processor. I'm running the most up to date stable version of ubuntu. Kernel 2.6.35-22.
I know the description of the problem is very vague, but it's hard to describe it more accurately. I couldn't find anything helpful on google or the forum. If you have any ideas what might cause the problem or which log files might provide useful information, please let me know. Most importantly, the problem did not occur before I upgraded to Maverick.

I was browsing my folder with lots of images, after finished i close nautilus and i notice that my computer became slow, so i'll check it with system monitor and had found that nautilus are using almost 100mb of ram (opening 4 tabs). I'm not sure if this was normal or not because i try to reopen the same folder with pcmanfm and it only consumes less than 20mb of ram (opening 4 tabs).

I have debian lenny, when I run an application is slow to load (example: iceweacel open and it takes, I can hold him iceweacel work normally), I tried to change from gnome to another and the same thing, went down some services (samba, squid) and nothing. I open a terminal and it takes, I want to duplicate it and do it fast. I tried Ubuntu Network version on a USB stick on my Netbook Samsung NF210 with 2GB RAM but this does not seem to be a viable way forward to me. Ubuntu on USB stick seems very slow to load. When resuming seemed to throw up errors. Resuming from Windows takes 3 seconds. I am reluctant to dual boot my netbook with Ubuntu after my experiences with my spare laptop. Is there a safe way to install Ubuntu on a netbook to dual boot with Windows Starter? how I get Ubuntu to work with a 'Three' Mobile dongle?

I recently bought Dell Studio 1747 with i7 processor. My fan keeps running fast and does not slow even when the load on processor is low or idle. In pre-installed Windows 7, fan works perfectly increasing and decreasing speed based on work load. The noise made by the fan is irritating.

We have a networked Kyocera cs-3050 printer. When I print something to it, the Print window hangs for about a minute while the printer process queries the printer. This would be acceptable if it did happen EVERY TIME I printed a document.
Is there some way to have the printer driver cache the information instead of asking for it every time?

Laptop: HP 6910p Wireless Card: BCM4312 NO issues with wireless in 8.10 (intrepid) - fwcutter driver. Performed clean install of 10.04 (lucid) onto a brand new hard drive (July 2010) - fwcutter driver. NO issues with wireless in 10.04 (lucid) until a few days ago, when. my laptop shutdown because the battery died and I safe-upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic. Currently I have chronic wireless connectivity issues - slow to non-existent. Ping tests (ping -c6 google.com or ping -c6 4.2.2.1) sometimes reveal 0% loss, sometimes 100% loss, sometimes "unknown host" - within 5 minutes of each other. Regardless of ping results, web pages are consistently slow to load. Skype will also cut out from time to time as the wireless connection vacillates. I have a MacBook Pro which I am using as my (wireless and consistently well-connected) control - and from which I am currently forced to draft this note.

I experienced what i perceive as the craziest thing during 2 years of using ubuntu. About some months ago, I have two ubuntu installed on my HP-mini netbook: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit (CAElinux) and kubuntu 10.04, and run without problem.
One day, the netbook's battery run out of charge and I forgot to plug it in. The ubuntu, as usual, went to hibernate, but without harddisk noise, so I forced it to shutdown by pressing power button (as i think it is not normal). What happened later was the partition of 10.04 was broken, it could not boot, it even affected another partition as the netbook couldn't boot kubuntu 10.04.
I try to run liveUSB and CD of both distro and the liveCD/USB boot stopped on loading screen. So I try another linux distro: PCLinuxOS, which was able to boot but took very long time. The partition of ubuntu 10.04 could not be accessed.
After installing PClinuxOS in replace of kubuntu, I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition and the partition was fixed, I could access the partition and could load to ubuntu 10.04, but it took very long time. Here how it loaded: first: blank screen with blinking cursor, then ubuntu load screen, then back to blank screen with blinking cursor, then it showed numbers and sentences, like some scanning works. It took long time before login screen appeared (about 10-15 minute, while the prevously normal boot time in my netbook was less than 1 minute), but once its done, the ubuntu worked normally. This also the case in the PClinuxOS and the reason it load very slowly.
After this, I try to boot the liveUSB of various linux distro, and found some could boot while the others not:

The liveUSB boot could take 1 hour. I also try the latest Puppy, Gentoo and OpenSuse liveUSB but it couldn't boot, and it likely the liveUSB problem. I made the all the liveUSB with unetbootin. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint could not boot even after I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition. There was no problem with the liveUSB as it would load normally on another computer. I think it is just the variant of ubuntu 10 that is not being able to boot.
I was not content on this slow boot, so I try to format the two partition of ubuntu and PClinuxOS (there are another partitions though), and installed ubuntu 8. But it also happened to boot slowly as the previous ubuntu. Then I replaced it with linuxmint 8, and the same occurred. So I try to install windows on another partition, and it boot normally.
The question is, what is happening. Why do the forced-shutdown-of-ubuntu-10.04 affect another partition, to the boot of another distro? If my HD was broken, the Windows would load very slowly too right? Yes, in SMART Data (from disk utility) it showed "few bad sector", but i think this is not related to the slow boot. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint cannot boot until this moment. I am thinking there are some informations planted on my computer, that twist it to load some distro slowly, and prevent it to load some others. But where and what? (I almost arrived to the thought that this is supernatural!)
Because of my long story up there (as I think it must be reported), the conclusion is:
1. Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook was forced shutdown (by me)
2. It caused the partition broken
3. After fixing the partition (by scan, but I forgot the command), it took very long time to boot, but the ubuntu itself run normally
4. It also affected the boot of another distro (slow down the boot time), but Ms.Windows boot time is normal
5. It also caused ubuntu 10 (and its variant) to not be able to boot from liveCD/USB
6. It also caused me going crazy
Now im gonna format the whole HD in hope of ubuntu 10.04 (and later) could boot again, but shall it fix the problem? (as formatting the previously ubuntu 10.04 partition did not solve the problem). Or should I buy another HD (or even computer) to install natty!

I am having problems with website load speeds. I have fendora 15 and windows loaded on my machine. When I am in windows the internet connection is fine but when I am in fedora everything is slow. I am connecting wirelessly to a netgear router using a D-Link DWA-552 XtremeN Desktop Adapter
I have not installed anything for the wireless card.
I have tested my speeds from here [url] and I know that I am getting around 7000kb down.
I have gone into firefox to about:config and set network.dns.disableIPv6 to true... but everything is slow.

I've enabled LDAP authentication on my 2.2.15 Apache server, but now pages load very slowly. As in, 1.515s with it enabled, and 187.4ms without (just the base page, numbers collected via Firebug). Here's my LDAP config (other directives snipped) -

I have a script which takes a file as input and reads it in while loop cuts the name of table and stores in a variable opens DB connection and queries for rowcount in that table closes the connection reads another file and then follows step 1 through 4 till EOF is reached. Now this script is taking longer to execute maybe because the DB connection is opened and closed each time.

I've setup Squid3 running on Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit server, and configured it to act as a transparent proxy and setup my router following these instructions: [URL]
Everything works great as far as browsing, but my main goal was to cache large downloads (usually executables) that I download frequently. So I set the minimum to 300KB and the max to 100MB. The problem, though, is the cache is not being used. I can download a file at regular speed on one computer, and then try and download it again and it downloads from the internet again, rather than the cache, so the speed is no faster.

I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.1. I notice that when my server gets slow and the load goes up, there is a bunch of processes call mi_dmonq running. Does anyone know what this process does? I tried to find it online but didn't find anything. Also, I tried to find the binary on the server but find doesn't return anything. Does anyone know what it is?

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.
