Ubuntu :: Cyrillic Fonts Support - Can't Extract Files
Jul 1, 2011my problem is that I can't extract some files because of a problem with cyrillic fonts (at least, this is what I suspect). The point is that I download some kind of files, which are fully functional to extract and open in windows but in Ubuntu trying the same thing, ends with an error. Files are downloaded from a russian web, so I think the fonts are cyrillic, which is the root of the problem. In windows they are shown as some kind of rare ASCII string but it's OK to open them.
The problem when trying in Ubuntu is that the file is shown as a large string with question marks '?' replacing all non-latin characters and it may cause problem, as it is the wildcard shell character in Linux. Renaming the file seems as an impossible task too. I have to process many of these files. Does Anyone know how can I avoid windows to do this? I tried to install many packages for cyrillic/russian support through synaptic nut it didn't seem to work.
Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Wrong After Installing Truetype Fonts / Why Is So?
Jan 15, 2010I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

Jul 3, 2011I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?
Feb 23, 2010I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

Feb 23, 2011I have a pdf file (nasm documentation) that used to be displayed perfectly with xpdf, but now all code example lines remain blank. On the terminal I get repeated lines such as:

I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.

May 14, 2010...I have found that in MS word/excel that the fonts don't look right, even though it states they are installed. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this also. I have installed the MS fonts after following the guidance. Usually the fonts look thinner than they should. I have recently installed (wubi) 10.04 & haven't installed any office apps to see if it also happens now....I will note: This isn't limited to MS software. I see it happen with other software that requires WINE to use. So, I think it is a WINE issue. Has anyone found a resolution to this?

I have already copied them onto a flash drive, I just don't know how (or if it's even possible) to install them. I have already tried the Synaptic Package Manager thing, which helped get a few more, but I'd still like some of my old ones.

May 27, 2010I finally performed my upgrade from Karmic today, everything went smooth and looked great. I decided to check out how KDE looked so I logged out, went into KDE and poked around for a bit then went back to GNOME. All my fonts are now that horrible tiny KDE font and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to return the fonts to their previous glory.
Can anyone, please, point me in the right direction? I've totally removed KDE from my system, I took all the files out of ~.fontconfig and set antialiasing to false in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-antialias.conf but still no joy. I haven't found the settings to get back to default but I've installed the MS font pack which looks better than the KDE stuff

Jun 11, 2010i have installed Ubuntu LTS 10.04. I have some type1 hindi fonts like Avanti, Mitra etc which i am using on my windows computers very well. Now i am start trying to install these fonts on Ubuntu by copying the .pfb files to /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/. Now when i check in any text editor fonts are showing but when i open any existing file containing matter of this fonts its not in proper hindi and i am also not able to write with these fonts. Whereas when i am trying to install some ttf hindi fonts these working fine.

Jul 26, 2010Everything looked great until I installed and then uninstalled Kubuntu desktop. Now the fonts in Chrome and Firefox look, imho, "bad". I installed the msttcorefonts but there is no difference. I've attached a screenshot, which illustrates the problem. It looks to me like the bold is too bold and the normal type is too thin and not spaced correctly.

Ubuntu :: Find What .pdf Fonts Are Being Used
Aug 8, 2011How do you find what font a .pdf document is using, because some font formats I can past into Writer, but other's I can't. It tells me the font name in the dropdown, but it's not available. I will like to know the actual font file name if possible.
For example; I have one .pdf uses a combo of HCNXFY+TimesNewRomanPSMT and KFRPVS+TimesNewRomanPSMT, but when I intall TimesNewRomanPS.otf, TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT.otf, TimesNewRomanPS-ItalicMT.otf and TimesNewRomanPSMT.otf, I'm still not able to get the same format.
This means I'm missing a/or font(s). So, is there a app I can use to find what font(s) a .pdf is using?

Jan 22, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on a Compaq Presario 2100 and I found some weird stuff.The thing is, when I run the Live CD and install it to the hard drive I got a netbook_launcher interface with black fonts for icons and menus instead of white as it is intended to be. But the weirdest thing is that when I run that same CD on other computers the fonts are standard white, so there's nothing wrong with the CD.
I wouldn't care much about this, but since the laptop screen is not too bright it's quite hard to read the icons and menu labels, and I have to stick to very light backgrounds for best contrast. I have tried Gnome Color Chooser, but it doesn't seem to work on netbook_launcher. So, any ideas on why is this happening or how to change the font color in netbook_launcher? I've been looking on the internet for a couple of days but I'm not able to find anything useful.

Jan 29, 2010I'm coming from windows and now I've switched to ubuntu. I find firefox 3.5 (and now 3.6) very hard to read. I'd like to have the same font rendering on my ubuntu than on my windows xp, using internet explorer with cleartype enabled. I've searched A LOT on Internet, tested like 20 different .fonts.conf. However I still can't get what I want. Take a look at my screenshots :[URL]
On the left : ubuntu (Firefox 3.6) - on the right : XP (Internet Explorer I'd like to have the same fonts than on the right.
Picture "enabled.png" is the closest display I can get. But it's still not perfect.

My fonts config in firefox is the same than on windows (Times new roman, arial, courrier new). And of course I've installed the ttf mscorefonts package.
I don't say that IE is the best thing in the world It's only because I've used it a lot and now it's hard to browse sites with different fonts.

Mar 23, 2010I installed Wine on my machine just a few minutes ago and as part of the installation the following packages are also installed: ttf-liberation,
ttf-mscorefonts-installer, ttf-symbol-replacement, ttf-tahoma-replacement. These add extra fonts to the system which I'm assuming are required by windows programs running inside Wine. The problem is though that Firefox also seems to be using these fonts because the fonts now look different inside Firefox. Not a huge difference, but you can tell they are different and they just don't look "right" to the eye. They are no longer as pleasing as they were when Firefox was using the default Ubuntu fonts.
Is there a way to keep these fonts for use by Wine, but not allow any other program on Ubuntu to use them?

May 4, 2010I have PClinuxOS 2010 with KDE 4.4.2 and i want to smooth GTK applications.I have installed QtCurve theme and edited gtkrc in home dir and i also set up subpixel rendering to RGB and hinting to full.I know those fonts are smoothed but there is slight difference as you can see in screenshot,and for example Floola isn't smoothed at all(is this GTK app?).My question is,can i make GTK fonts more smooth and how do i do it?
