I'm trying to put her hard drive into my functioning laptop to save her pictures. I downloaded the universal usb installer and am going to try and make a virtual drive from one of my flash drives. I need to know what a good iso would be for network support that is pre-loaded so I don't have to mess around with getting the usb set up before transferring the files.
View 5 RepliesI have an XD card with lots of pictures in it which suddenly stopped working, it gives me "card error" messages in my camera (and any other one) and it refuses to mount on my laptop's card reader (which does work in F11 for XD cards, I've tried other ones).So I'm trying to use some program to make an image of what's in the card, like ddrescue or dd_rhelp. But they all need me to mount the disk, which I just can't. I have tried to mount it manually, but I'm not even sure what device I should point to.
So my question is, how can I mount a faulty drive in such a way that any of these programs can make an image? Or maybe there is a smarter way to try to get my pictures back? (There are some non-free programs in Windows which may seemingly help, but I'd like to figure out how to do this in Linux).
I'm trying to help out a Windows Vista user by rescuing their data from a failing hard disk. When their laptop stopped booting, I immediately pulled the disk to get as much as I could off of it using another Windows box, but the process took days and ultimately choked on multiple bad sectors and stopped responding. I then hooked it up to my Ubuntu box via a USB disk dock and ran a ddrescue on the Windows partition. The operation took a week, then seemed to get stuck for another week on the "splitting failed blocks" phase. So I have an dd image and a log to go back to, but when I resume that process it still seems to use the disk and I don't see much progress.
I then tried a plain `dd` on the disk with `conv=noerror,sync` options, and that has been running for a few days now, but with input/ouput error messages every few seconds and seemingly no records going in or out. I think that's a bad sign.What's the best, and fastest, way to get the most data off the disk as possible and into an image file, and then perform any necessary operations on the image file so that the disk is no longer needed (since it seems to be just about dead)? Er, just realized I'd put "Windows 7" in the post title, but this is a Vista partition, and I can't change the title. They're pretty similar, with one OS being much less useful than the other, but I thought I'd better acknowledge my mistake.
I have a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 which appears to be completely wrecked. Even in recovery mode I can't get any GUI. The only access I can get is via command line, which with my limited knowledge of cd and ls commands shows me that the home directory is OK and all the data files present.
How can I get the data files off this machine, eg by copying them to a usb stick, or maybe by copying them to the Windows partition (which still works OK)?
I had installed ubuntu, then windows xp, surprise surprise I lost the boot loader for ubuntu. I have 2 different live boot cd's one for 9.10 and another for 10.04. My PC would be running 10.04, if I could install grub. When I go to help on the live boot disk menu, it tells me that rescuing a broken system is not enabled on either disk, though I downloaded a full copy of the disk when I downloaded it. What can I do to get grub back onto my computer? I deleted the XP partition hoping that would help. It didn't now the pc will only boot when I have the live boot cd.

During the installation of some updates of Windows vista I powered off the system and since then my Windows Vista gives blue death screen error. I think it as some MBR corruption issue for which I have searched these corrective steps:
Step 1:1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
7. Restart the computer.
Step 2: use bootrec.exe to fix MRB and BOOT
1. Put the Windows Server 2008 installation disc in the disc drive(you can use Windows Vista installation disc too), and then start the computer.

3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer, and then click Next.

My DVD-ROM does not detect any media I insert into it. So I have created a Windows Vista's USB installation media.My Problem: At present Fedora boots normally. But when I will fix MBR, what will happen to fedora ? If it removes the grub, I will not be able to boot in fedora. Please suggest something. I think there must be a way to install grub through USB, but I don't know the 'howtos' of that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to transfer a lot of data from my laptop to my computer. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04 and both have Samba installed, and folders are setup for sharing. The laptop has a 56Mbps Wireless G built in module, and the computer has a Airlink AWLL6075 Wireless N USB Adapter 300Mbps. (I got the USB adapter working with the internet, since there was an issue with it just working out the box)
I have a wireless network, since wired is out of the question. The router is a Belkin Play N600 HD if that makes any difference. When i try to transfer the files across the speed of the transfer maxes out at about 785 Kbps (My Internet speed is 7Mbps=875 KB/s). It seems that the file is being sent to the router and then the internet and back to the router and then my computer.
I figure that bottleneck is my Laptop at 56Mbps, but that still gives a theoretical max of 7MB/s even at a low connection/link counting it at 24Mbps would still be 3MB/s. I even tried making a wireless Ad-Hoc network to transfer the files but when i went to Network it wouldn't show any shares.
I'm missing something to make it go faster and i really can't figure out what it is, maybe because I am too close to it.
I can share my phone's 3G data with my 10.10 running laptop using usb tether; the phone has no wireless or bluetooth capability. Is it possible to set up my tethered laptop to share the 3G data with another device via the laptop's wireless?NKS!

The graphical chip of this laptop is damaged in such a way that during boot I can see texts but once the GUI starts it is over. No more picture. This happens with Vista, but also when I boot a live-cd from Ubuntu.The owner of this laptop, not me, wants to buy a new one but would like all data to be saved.I have downloaded the server version of Ubuntu 10.04 (so I stay in text mode) and with the CD I can boot into restore mode. There it is possible to mount the internal hard-disk, after which I can see the data.
But... how do I get it from the disc? How do I setup the network, which I believe is running already, to make the laptop a part of my home network? Now from other computers I can't see this laptop, and I have no idea how to see my computers from this laptop.Or is it possible to burn a CD/DVD in Restore mode. If so how do I do that?
I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I did a dist-upgrade to 9.10, figured my sound and video problem of the live CD may have been fixed as i last tried on the last Beta.It has been working (mostly) for the last few days, i say mostly as it likes to disable my wifi quite frequently and only editing a blacklist file fixes it.Today i have booted and got to my Grub menu, then i get a black screen for a while before getting a message about the /dev/disk/by-uuid/f49b68fd-a095-402c-a068-82a6b40f2aed does not exist. Then it dumps me to a Busybox shell and leaves me with a (initramfs) prompt.Can anyone tell me what on earth is going on, the disks have not been changed by me (via fdisk or anything) and it has already fired up into 9.10 a couple of times in the last few days.

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.
Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.

Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.
When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

About 7 years ago I setup a Redhat system with 8 serial terminals and 8 serial printers, this is still running but I need to get another system running so the original can be taken down for maintenance. The printers are ancient Newbury data dot matrix wide carriage with 7 data bits receive 8 data bits transmit Xon/Xoff flow control. Now I remember setting the transmit and receive data bits as above but after 7 years can't remember where.
