Okay, so I'm on Lucid Lynx, 64 bit. I installed libgvfscommon0 via synaptic manager, restarted, and it just sat on the Ubuntu screen loading. For a long time. I did a hard restart, and it said it was having an error with graphics, or somethig, and couldn't start into graphics mode. It asked if I wanted to try low graphics mode. I said yes.
Now I'm logged in but it's all text. (As you can tell, I don't have much experience with this stuff.) Would removing libgvfscommon0 unbreak my system?
Background: I was trying to get my Ipod touch to work, so I was following the directions at [URL]
On the third step, it gave me an error to the effect of:
"Unmet dependencies: gvfs: conflicts: libgvfscommon0 but 1.6.1-0ubuntu1build1 is to be installed E: broken packages"
That's when I went and installed it manually via synaptic manager, and then restarted and-kaput.
Should I try to use the command line to remove that package? How would one do that?
I downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.
Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.
And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?
If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.
I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.
I did a clean install of 10.10 on my Asus A6R laptop today. Previously i had 10.04 on it.
After installation and the first reboot my GNOME won't start in normal session. If I select Ubuntu Desktop Edition (safe mode) everything works fine, but on the normal Ubuntu Desktop Edition session, GNOME just won't start. I have a mouse cursor that i can move around and a normal background. Also i can hear the usual startup sound.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and I did some Update Manager system updates yesterday evening without paying to much attention at the process. This morning when I started my computer, it froze during boot and my Ubuntu is not working anymore. I managed to start it in "Safe Mode" and checked the kernel version which is 2.6.35-24-generic . In System > About Ubuntu it says that I am using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011 and supported until October 2012 even though I am sure I didn't do any dist. upgrade.
trying to get Firefox working properly. I have the tarball installed from Firefox�s site and am using Fedora 12 with KDE as the desktop environment. The problem is if I start Firefox normally, say, by just clicking on the firefox script, then the graphics will be rather crude; but when Firefox starts as soon as I log in (because I�ve configured it to auto-start) then the graphics will be nice and smooth. I�m having a hard time trying to find answers for this because I�m not exactly sure what�s happening? I think when it auto-starts as I log in, it�ll use... well, this is the bit I haven�t got a clue how to explain? I�d guess one time it uses QT, and the other time it�ll use GTK.
I don�t know why it�s doing this, and when it�s started normally and I go to shutdown most of the time it�ll come up with a crash report. There isn�t any difference in the way Firefox is being opened, the auto-start calls upon the same script that my shortcut uses, which is the same as clicking on the firefox script in the firefox folder. I have a few images attached to elucidate the problem. I understand I may not have made myself very clear, but I�m having a great deal of trouble understanding what precisely is going on.
Firefox can seem a bit glitchy when the crude graphics are in use. Like the mouse-overs which leave traces of the box behind when you move the mouse away. So I�m having to logout then back in if I�ve happened to close Firefox and want to reopen it...
Firefox is set to launch automatically at startup. It regularly starts up in offline mode. Then, once wireless connection is established, I have to restart FF in order to get it to browse the net.
This has been amply discussed and fixes have been suggested. I've tried at least three modifications using FF's 'about:config', but to no avail.
I don't have any connection issues, but Firefox always starts in offline mode. I can uncheck it and everything works fine. If I close and reopen it Firefox switches back to offline mode.
Finally solved a problem of wireless not working on my laptop. Now I have a problem where Firefox (3.6.4) starts up in off-line mode on each instance. I have to go to files menu and uncheck the work offline button before trying to go to any site. When I close firefox and later open it again, the work offline button is still checked.
Why is the unchecking of work offline saved between instances? Other settings and preferences are saved correctly. I don't have this problem in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 (same version of FF).

During startup (suse linux old distro) LILO immediately after stratup procedure I can see login for about 1 sec and then Xserver starts. I'm unable to kill it with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or Ctrl+F1..So the question is: is there any way I can force linux to boot into console mode before it starts xserver? (I'm unable to modify any files since I cannot reach the consol mode)?Is there any shortcut ky I need to press during boot in order to prevent GUI from starting?
use Fedora 15. I had installed driver for my ATI graphic card, as it was written in Fedora guide, then when I rebooted the system the bars and icons appeared with strange, changed colours (purple, green, etc). I've read that this happened because of the bad drivers, so I tried to fix it. Unfortunatelly because I'm Linux newbie and I'm also very nervous I deleted (using Fedora software manager) everything connectedtalyst from my system.Now when I try to start my computer, grub starts in text mode.My question is:What can I do? Do I have to reinstall my system or maybe someone knows how to fix it?I'm quite scared because now I can't launch not only Fedora but also Windows.(I'm writing from another computer
i did an update after a LONG time on my machine (there were like 77 updates) and when i restarted the computer, as reccomended, it booted up saying that ubuntu is gunna run in low graphics mode... apparently i am not able to use a window manager either, as became evident when i clicked on the "show desktop" button...
also there are no tabs for any of the open windows on my "start bar" (the lower bar across the screen... also i cant switch to different desktops anymore and i cant maximize/minize or drag windows like my web browser around (probably cause there isnt a window manager running)....
I have (not so recently) installed 10.04. It seems to randomly go into low graphics mode completely randomly i.e. using firefox, gimp, terminal.... not just with high graphics programs. A dialog will pop up and say that my devices are not detected/ configured properly. I then have to force shutdown..
In these days I install ubuntu 9.10 64bit on several notebook (Intel + AMD Switchable Graphics, NVIDIA Optimus Hybrid graphics), but the same problem is it can't boot ubuntu with graphic mode. I only can install it with text mode, and after installation, it still boot with text mode. I tried to execute startx, but failed to switch to graphics mode. I didn't see this issue with some notebooks with ATI/NVIDIA graphics, so I think this issue may relate with VBIOS VBE mode settings.
When I try to execute "startx" under the text mode, some error information appears as below. (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found
I have Ubuntu 10.10 and when I boot my PC I can see the following message: Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and Ubuntu stops booting. I can-t boot in it I can only use command line. I think I accidentally uninstalled some packages clicking at completelly removal at some ipod utillities in synaptic. How can I fix this?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I tried a solution for a wifi problem (wasn't always connecting) and now when I reboot I get "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" along with a bunch of EE messages. When I click OK it gives me "Run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session." Which gets me back to the desktop.

Cancel and OK buttons. I choose OK and the system seems to boot ok.
I'm not sure what is wrong or how to go about solving this one.
This started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.
I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.
(Consider yourselves forewarned: I'm completely new and will be incredibly stupid. Give me slack. )
So I'm trying to run my S-Video cord from my HP Desktop to my television screen. Everything was set up, then I looked up how to get it to start playing on forums here. I went to my NVIDIA, and when I went to change what apparently had to be changed, it was already set up in the format I was supposed to set it up as. I hit "save", and then restarted my computer, as the step-by-step instructions said. Upon restarting, I got an interesting message saying that Ubuntu had to be run in low graphics mode. I don't know the logistics of my computer, or really anything (it was given to me, and I don't know how to check ) I've been reading some things here, and a few things sounded like what was wrong with me, but when I followed the directions, it got me no where. I'm coming to you to prevent me from chucking this thing out my window .
So, what I'm asking from you:
1)How do I get out of Low Graphic Mode 2)How do I set up my NVIDIA to play to my TV?
Have a reasonably old HP D510 running onboard Intel 845G graphics, which has worked fine to date using Suse 10/11.x x86 and also have tried various Ubuntu breeds on it before, as well. Have just installed Kubuntu 10.04, and am having issues that irregularly, and apparently randomly, screen goes black and I get a message saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode".
I OK this and get a messages asking me what I would like to do: 1 Run in low graphic for this session 2 Reconfigure graphic 3 Troubleshoot 4 Exit to console 5 Restart x
Basically, none of these work. If I click 2, there are a number of choices which don't work, can only cancel. Basically the only fix is a reboot, and it will again work for a 'random period of time'. Have never had this issue previously, so it is obviously something that has been introduced with 10.04? Briefly installed Ubuntu 10.04 prior to Kubuntu, and think I had the same prob.
For some reason after updating, somewhere my system is messed up where my 3d acceleration doesn't work. I found a workaround though, I can get it to work when I reboot, and manually select my OS at the grub2 menu by pressing enter. It doesn't work all the time this way, but most the time it does allow 3d acceleration to work almost normal. If I let the grub2 timer count down to auto select it will never be 3d accelerated, and prompts me it's going to run in low-graphics mode and I'm given an option to Restart X. Ok that's one part of it...
Now with my workaround say I got 3d acceleration to work, when I go to System > Preferences > Appearance : and for Visual Effects I select "Normal" (was on none). It will apply fine, until I reboot it gets set back to none. So I'm having to manually put everything back (graphics) every time I boot, this is a horrible bug. Then onto another aspect of this wonderful update. All my letters and numbers on the keyboard are normal, except when I use control and ALT, they don't seem to be mapped correctly because I can't use any of my Keyboard Shortcuts.
Installed ubuntu successfully on the hard disk through live CD. My machine is a ASUS K40IN, with Graphics card GEForce G102M. Can't get ubuntu to run normally so I have to access through terminal in recovery mode. I need to install the drivers for the graphics card so I can run ubuntu in some form of gdm, otherwise I'm pretty much blind since I'm not too good with code.
/etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist, so I can't use the exploit to get me to low graphics mode.
If there's a command I can enter into grub to run me in low graphics mode, anyone? I'm keeping [URL] and [URL] threads in view, since it's very possible I'm running into the same problems. I have the nvidia driver loaded on my ntfs usb stick ready to transfer and install but I can't seem to mount it proper. FailsafeX graphics mode does not work. I get a blank black screen.
I'm facing a peculiar problem with my Ubuntu 10.04. In the normal graphics mode, while connecting to the internet, it is showing "Resolving host" in the browser and never gets connected. However, when I boot the m/c in to FailsafeX Graphics Mode (under repair option), I can surf the internet. I think there might be some problems with the graphics.
Running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell PC. I recently installed a theme called Faezna and now Ubuntu always runs in low graphics mode
I have -Uninstalled and deleted theme files -Changed theme back to default theme -Rebooted several times -Restored graphics settings in low graphics mode (pre-boot menu thing)
The thing that makes it worse is that the theme never even worked in the first place and T never got to see it!
First off, I am still using 10.04. This hasn't happened to me until now. I was in Vista (I have vista on another partition) doing some things in Photoshop, and I saved it, and done. I restarted to go back into ubuntu and when it was booting it gave me a message saying: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

I had been using Ubuntu 10.04.1 in a Macbook pro (triple boot: Mac, Win7 and Ubuntu). Now I am not able to boot in to Ubuntu in graphics mode. It just freezes after the Ubuntu logo appears. It happened once before and I re-installed the OS. Now I have the same issue. I can boot in recovery mode and get into my account.
When I tried startx command I get the error below:
(there is more stuff splashed on the screen, but the above two are the only errors I see)
I thought of reinstalling the OS. But this may happen again and re-installing the OS every month wipes out all my configurations and files in my account.
I recently uninstalled some unnecessary libs thinking that I could work around without them. It turned out I couldn't. So I installed every single one, and it seemed like everything was working fine. But then I tried to boot, and was thrown into a low-graphics. Well I tried to boot in a low-graphics environment temporarily but it turned out X just restarted. Then I tried to reconfigure the settings, but choosing any option it threw me back into the last menu without any action being taken.
So I googled up some lines it was vomiting at me and it indeed might be my xorg not configured properly. but every time I try to reconfigure it and I look into the .conf file it turns out it is completely blank. maybe I should also note I am sporting a 64 bit bubuntu, not an NVidia though, Intel Series 4 express chipset family thing. I think it is a GMA4500MHD but not sure, what shall I do so that I don't have to reinstall my beautiful pimped out system?
