Jan 17, 2011I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. Ubuntu :: NTFS External Drive - Disappearing Folders
Jul 12, 2010I'm using an external hard drive formatted to NTFS to keep my projects on. I edit projects from both Ubuntu and Windows XP.
After editing some files in a couple of folders on the drive I have now noticed that any Ubuntu machine I plug the drive into can see the entire contents of the drive, but now, I have 4 folders that do not appear in Windows XP. I have plugged the drive backwards and forwards between three machines now (one of them dual boot) and Ubuntu definitely finds the folders and Windows definitely doesn't. This has only happened one Ubuntu has edited files, though some of the files and folders that have been edited are still visible in XP.
I presume something went wrong whilst writing file tables or whatever they are called these days. Does anybody know how I can get the folders visible in XP again? Do I need to run something in Ubuntu or in XP to 'rescan' the drive?
Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?
Jun 19, 2011I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
Ubuntu :: Seeing Folders - Plug In The External Drive And Get Error "format The Drive"
May 30, 2010I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

Ubuntu :: Cannot See Any Backup Hard Drive Contents Except Folders ?
Jun 5, 2010Recently, Ubuntu was doing a standard update. It got stuck in some kind of strange loop. So i put the boot disk in cleared the master drive and reinstalled ububtu 10.4. I have a backup 500gb drive that use to keep the contents of my important information for my fileserver. After the completed install and found the backup drive STILL named "FILESERVER" and still has my folders aka: our pictures, our music, and our video. I opened them up and they're all empty. Am I missing some informaton? I swear i didn't format the drive. I couldn't have since the folders are still there. Where are all my files at?

My current installation has a layout like this.
The rest is in '/' integrated.
Does it make sense to give more folders a own partition? And if so, how much should you apply to each folder?
There are 2 users on the computer and there is nothing special or big installed.
I have currently 2 more harddrives which host music/picture & movie data's.
The reason for my question is just that i want to save my data in case of one folder failing.
Hardware :: USB Hard Drive Not Reading / All Files And Folders In Partition Disappeared?
Jun 23, 2011I have been backing up onto a 60G ext2/3/4 partition on a 1TB external USB hard disk for a year or so now and have built up a few folders of .thunderbird, .mozilla, and other assorted files - using this as my standard "backup system" - but suddenly all the files and folders in this partition seem to have disappeared.
In Gparted and KParted the partition shows up as the correct size with the correct amount of "used space" (= yellow coloured portion), as it does when running offof any CD/standalone OS. And the small bars under the volume names in Dolphin show about the right amount having been "used" too.But however I try to access this partition (or, to be correct LVM I spose:-)) it still always comes up as empty - ie 0 files in it. After months of working just fine.The NTFS partition on the same external USB sdd reads and writes quite OK/normally and also shows the correct amount of "used space" - but even from root I can't see any of the old files in, or read/write to the linux one. It comes up with "Denied"/"Can't Write to.." errors when trying to write anything to it.
I ran a freeware utility called DiskInternals Linux-Recovery from winDoze which, after half an hour, came up with a list showing all the folders and files in the partition. It said that they would be written back onto the hard drive that they were "retrieved" from - but no change happened - still no contents showing when booting up in any linux.

Jan 18, 2010I am having problems mounting an iso on my external hard drive. I do not want to move it onto my linux partition because it is 3.6 GB. I have a directory made (/media/iso) that I would like to mount it in, but if that doesn't work then I don't care where it goes. After I mount it I want to be able to run it using Wine, but that will come later. For now I just need to get it mounted. And, of course, I am fairly new to linux/ubuntu.

Feb 1, 2010I have a 250GB external hard drive that I want to format to ext4. It will be used to store back ups of my documents, music and pictures. I tried booting the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD (amd64) and using gparted to delete the partitions that where on the hard drive leaving only unallocated space, then creating one new partition that was ext4. I clicked apply and after a short time it said all operations completed successfully.
Now the problem is it won't let me transfer any documents onto the hard drive, or even create a folder or file. If I go into the properties of the hard drive, under the permissions tab it says I am not the owner...?

Ubuntu :: Can't Unmount External Hard Drive
Jun 17, 2010I have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime,nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help

Aug 2, 2010I want to backup my documents, using Fwbackups, on an external hard drive (a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini). But I can't seem to access that drive from FWbackups. As a first test, I tried a One-time backup (to backup some of my personal folders).Using Nautilus file manager, I access the external hard drive simply by going to Network, then to "Edmini FTP" or to "EDmini SMB". But when I need to pick a destination folder in Fwbackups, I can't seem to find the external hard drive. I tried "local folder", then Browse, but Network doesn't appear.
(Can I find it somewhere else?)I tried "local folder", then copy pasted the location from Nautilus [URL] but that didn't work - I get the red button, and when I do try the backup, I get "ERROR : The destination folder [URL] could not be created: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: [URL] So how do I choose my external hard drive as destination ?
Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive Device Name?
Aug 11, 2010I am setting up a Linux laptop for my parents, and want to also create some backup scripts to allow them to easily back up to an external hard drive. [And for them to be able to use it, it has to be super simple.]
For security purposes (should the external drive ever get lost or stolen), I want to encrypt the entire device using TrueCrypt. That means my scripts will have to use TrueCrypt to mount the backup volume using the device name. [Right?]
Now to the actual question(s): 1) Is there a way to ensure that an external hard drive will ALWAYS be assigned the same device name when plugged in? [That would be the simplest solution for me.]
2) Alternatively, is there a way (using bash scripting) to "find" the device name of a particular external hard drive, even if it might not be known in advance.
Ubuntu :: Two Users One External Hard Drive?
Oct 18, 2010Just got a WD Elements 2TB External Hard Drive for my home computer (Ubuntu Lucid)in which I will load all the media files (pics, music, video), it mounted automatically to my user, no problem, but I have two questions:1.) I can see that it has some stuff on root level, an autorun folder, a System Volume Information folder, and an autorun.inf file. Do I leave them there? Or do I delete them?2.) The marriage saver question. My wife cannot access the drive, even though it does appear as a folder with an "x mark" inside her media folder of the filesystem, but she gets something like she does not have sufficient user privileges or something like that.So how do I make it so that she can also access the drive, or certain folders of the drive, which would be an even better option as the backup stuff would be inaccessible to her
