Ubuntu :: Mirror For X86 Jaunty Floating Around - Getting Prompt Invalid Version
Jan 12, 2010
I'm running Koala in x86 now and ran into a few kernel problems. When I tried to report them I got a prompt telling me I didn't have a valid version of Ubuntu. I'm wondering if theres still a mirror for x86 Jaunty floating around? This is also prompted by the fact that I couldn't set my graphics right thanks to a lack of drivers

[URL]... I want to change the image in the floating ubuntu screensaver in 10.04 back to what was used in 9.10. I used the guide above but overwrote the old file instead of creating a new one. When I click on it, it shows the image I specified, but in the screensaver manager under system>preferences it still plays the new logo, not the old one. I've restarted my computer and such but no luck. Is there something else that needs to be changed?

Been using since summer 2009 the xserver no backfill from PPA: [URL] and it was working fine with my ATI video card. No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again!So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!

I installed Debian 5.03 Lenny successfully on my machine. I got this error during boot: ACPI : invalid PBLK length [5]. After that the Operating System boots properly and starts normally. What does this error statement mean? Is it safe to work with this installation despite this error?

Trying simply to insert into table. Have succeeded in doing this but now want to correct user use of invalid characters. If I'm understanding correctly, Real-escape-string seems to correct these, so I've been trying to figure out how to use it. A short, test code version gives me a syntax error at INSERT VALUES, which--because it still has the single quotes in the text--tells me the real-escape-string didn't work. The code below gives me a parseing error with invalid $END at </body>.
Insert Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' VALUES (UTC_TIMESTAMP,'What's happen' bra?')' at line 1 Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/powere15/public_html/DB/exercises_insert_record.php on line 94

I'm using f12. My university has recently become a mirror for fedora packages. But i'm facing a trivial problem. I have set proxy for yum so that the packages that are not available on local mirror can be downloaded from other mirrors. But then i don't know how to set no proxy for my local server. Consequently it is not using my local mirror at all. Tell me how to set no proxy for the local mirror. I want my local mirror because it's damn fast. My proxy settings are like this (they go in /etc/yum.conf):

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

pidgin started crashing today for no apparent reason. It just shutdowns. No freezing or anything, it just goes away, disappears. From what I can say, there's no specific trigger for this, it can happen after 2 or 10 min after I started it. Once it even shutdown right 10seconds. I tried to run it from the terminal. When I do that, the only thing that appears before closing is
Code:
Floating point exception Anyone has an idea of what it can be? I made no upgrade to pidgin or libpurple recently. I made however an upgrade today of the following packages

After seeing this conky profile I decided to try my hand at making something similar, as my conky profile looked pretty unappetising.All my conkyrc file does at the moment, is display an image and I seem to be falling at the first hurdle. I would like the image to be flush to the bottom of the screen however it floats about 100px above the bottom of the screen.Screenshot attached and conkyrc file below. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This is the first time I post a question on these forums My problem is as follows: I can't start gnome-terminal from the Applications->Accesories menu or from the Alt+F2 application launcher. I get a "Starting Terminal" in the task-bar that disappears after a few seconds and no terminal. I'm pretty sure there is something I did, but I can't really figure out what it is.
The things I've tried so far:
1. I used synaptic to remove and reinstall gnome-terminal. That didn't work
2. Started Xterm and tried to run "gnome-terminal". This is where it gets weird for me:
a. running the command as normal user I get a "Floating point exception" error and obviosly no terminal
b. when I do "sudo gnome-terminal" and enter the root password I get, as expected, a root terminal. I could live with that, but it's not ideal.

I have been trying to convert a DVD9 to DVD5 using the following steps
1)Rip the DVD title(s) to harddisk with DVD:RIP in a project folder. This created VOB files of the the movie and the soundtrack you picked.
2)Concatenate (merge) the VOB files into one by running in a console: cat *.vob > movie.vob
3)demutliplex movie.vob and get the M2V and AC3 files out of there. tcextract -i movie.vob -t vob -x mpeg2 > movie.m2v
4)tcextract -i movie.vob -a 0 -x ac3 -t vob > movie.ac3
5)I then shrank the movie.m2v tcrequant -i movie.m2v -o shrinked.m2v -f 1.5

I tried to install the 2.6.31.12 kernel (as suggested for security reasons) twice, and each time, I got a *BIG* mess up of the installation. Here is the story (I'll try to keep it short): The installation of the kernel was not a problem, it went fine both time (I just had to reorganize Grub entries a bit). At first, all was running normal. Suddenly, after having left the computer idle for a moment, I was faced with a black screen (blanker probably) and I could not wake up the system: no mouse, no keyboard, all seemed to be frozen and I had to press the reset button.
After the reboot, and as soon as the desktop was loaded, I got an error message saying that /var has 0 bytes left ! The nightmare began... The first time that happened, I tried to find what was wrong in /var and /var/log , but found nothing abnormal. The info given by the Diskinfo tool were strange, sometimes showing /var as 100% full, sometimes it was /home that was 100% full and some other times it was /. I tried to fall back to kernel 2.6.31.8 using Yast, but it failed at the middle of the process. At this point I realized that the system was very unstable.
I then booted the Install HD and run the repair mode. Some errors were found and corrected, but in the end, the system was not repaired; and worst, Grub lost all entries except the floppy one. (Hopefully, I knew how to boot the Install HD from Grub's command line). I tweaked again and again, and finally got my system up again with kernel 2.6.31.8 (don't remind all the steps). Recently, as the kernel update was still suggested, as there were other updates in the meantime (like mkinitrd), and as haven read anyone else complaining about 2.6.31.12, I decided to give a try again.
And again, a couple of days later, same symptoms: black frozen screen, no space left in /var. As I knew the system was unstable, I immediately booted the Install HD. Tried the repair mode and it failed (just mess Grub again). Tried to (update) install kernel 2.6.31.8 from there and it also failed. I then started the rescue mode and tried to delete some big files in /var (again I did not found any monstrous thing in there), then tried again the repair and update process with no better results.
From rescue mode, I finally deleted everything in /var (that was not a good idea as I also deleted some NEEDED files)... Got the system to boot, but only to the text login: nscd failed because of missing files in /var, starx failed because no X server found, ... Fed up, I lastly decided to "update" all system base RPM, the Gnome and KDE desktop environment from the 11.2 install HD, then update everything again with Yast Online Update.

I know it is wrong to use the "==" operator to compare the equality of two floating point numbers. Logically it would seem that if the "==" operator is not usable for floating point comparison, then the "<=" operator would also not be usable. Is this true? The lack of google search results on this topic made me think that it must be true. If that is true, then is it true that the only way to compare floats with <= or >= is with something like the code below? Code: bool smaller_than_or_equal(float a, float b) {
if ( fabs(a-b) < EPSILON){return true;}
else if (a < b) {return true;}
else {return false;}
} I think this is a general question, but if specifics are necessary, I am using the C++ language to code at the moment.

I am using a gateway server, 1st NIC eth0 which is acting as WAN (DHCP)and 2nd NIC acting LAN(static). I am using DHCP to assign IP to eth0 from a Wimax modem. I am also use it as a MAIL server (openmail), and as a DHCP server. My server is of RHEL and kernel version is 2.4.8.18-14 and DHCP client & server version - 30pl1-9. The prolem is whenever I run the command..
ifup eth0
getting the error...
Determining IP information for eth0.../ifup: line277: 23328 Floating point exception/sbin/dhclient ${DHCLIENTARGS} ${DEVICE}
so what should I do?? if I update the DHCP, would it be ok?

I'm reading a book on assembly, and it talks a bit about the IEEE floating point format.
Quote:
To summarize, the following steps are used to convert a decimal number to IEEE single format: 1. The leading bit of the floating point format is 0 for a positive number and 1 for a negative number. 2. Write the unsigned number in binary. 3. Write the binary number in binary scientific notation f23.f22 ... f0 2^e, where f23 = 1. There are 24 fraction bits, but it is not necessary to write trailing 0's. 4. Add a bias of 127 to the exponent e. This sum, in binary form, is the next 8 bits of the answer, following the sign bit. (Adding a bias is an alternative to storing the exponent as a signed number.) 5. The fraction bits f22f21 ... f0 form the last 23 bits of the floating point number. The leading bit f23 (which is always 1) is dropped.

On Karmic, every once in a while this error pops up near the notification area at the top right (also see attachment):
Timezone Errors See Error Console: Unknown timezones are treated as the 'floating' local timezone.
But the 'date' command shows the correct date/time and timezone. /etc/timezone is also set correctly. The machine is running ntpd and is connected to the net 24/7 via ethernet. I also don't see any 'timezone' errors in /var/log/* Which software is complaining? What is the "Error Console" it is referring to?

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition
(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)

Brand new to Linux. Just installed Debian 5.0.6 (64-bit). Upon booting up, the screen is all black with a gray floating screen that says "Input Not Supported". My guess is that the video card is not supported by Debian, but maybe somebody knows a way around this problem... (I know for a fact that both video card and LCD work fine in Windows XP.)
My hardware:
* Video card: ATI Radeo HD 4850
* LCD: Acer V193W
