Ubuntu :: Locks On Shutdown When Via Terminal?
Dec 6, 2010When I try shutting down Ubuntu (10.04) via the terminal (sudo shutdown now) it locks on the splash screen. I doesn't doe that when I shutdown with the button.

Ubuntu :: Computer Locks Up On Shutdown Process?
Jun 15, 2010so i just bought a new Sony Vaio laptop and things are seeming to run great. However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters

Dec 10, 2010I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Apr 19, 2011Naturally i don't want to harm my system but I would like I shutdown via the terminal. I understand there are shutdown poweroff and halt commands. Which is the safe one (like as if I just did it using the GUI) at the moment I am just using shutdown now and that seems to work fine, I just want to check that it's not harming my system and that this command does everything it needs to ie closes all programs and shuts everything down in a safe way.

sudo shutdown -h -P 60
Of course this shuts down the computer in an hour. I was wondering if there was a way I could get the computer to beep a few times for the last 10 Minutes and then a few more times for the last 5 minutes?

May 4, 2010My home desktop computer upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 without any problems. However, after all was said and done, the boot up and shut down screens look like crap. They are all in terminal text, and without any graphics. I have attached pictures of what they look like. This can't be right. Is there a way I can set the system to use the proper graphics when booting up and shutting down? I like my computer to be pretty.
This is what it does for most of the boot process:

Nov 5, 2010Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

Feb 26, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and have spent several days trying to make a few simple alterations to my Myth 9.10 installation. My biggest task was to get the MCE "power" and "start" buttons working, which they now are - sort of.
The problem is with the shutdown command that the power button activates seems to be different to the shutdown command from the taskbar shutdown menu i.e. when I switch off the computer with the remote it restarts with the "recovery" menu as it wasn't shutdown properly. Same thing happens with the shutdown command from a terminal window. Shutting off from the desktop menu is fine.

sudo shutdown -h <time> or sudo reboot from the terminal I get a rather annoying beep sound. What's even more annoying is if I use the shutdown command to specify a time I get a beep every 10 minutes or so.
I've tried disabling the terminal beep in the terminal profile, disabling the beep in System/Preferences/Sound, adding "blacklist pcspkr" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, and running gconf-editor from the terminal and setting /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode to 'off' rather than 'on'.

Sep 7, 2010Ubuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

Aug 18, 2010I have to type this quick because Ubuntu will lock up on me.The screen goes black, the cursor does NOT move, and the only way to recover is to do a hard reboot. This happened when I had windows XP installed as well, only it would reboot the machine after 5 minutes.I barely have time to open one program and it locks up.Could this be a hardware issue?I tried taking out the video card I had bought, thinking it would solve the problem, but it does not.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Freezes/locks Up On First Boot Almost Every Day?
Jan 6, 2010It gets stuck on the boot screen with the status bar, or on the loggin screen. The only solution is to reset. After that it is usually fine for the day and will reboot fine, it's a dual boot and my boys use windos on it a couple times a day also, that's why it's getting rebooted so much.
Any possible reasons for this? Or, how can I kill the boot image and get a text based boot screen? I tried Startupmanager, but it doesn't seem to work on 9.10.

Feb 19, 2010whenever i try to burn mp3 from a disk in the cdrom, the system will freeze up solid, keyboard, screen, mouse, the whole shebang. ubuntu will see an audio disk in the cdrom, and i can play some tracks off it (sometimes), but trying to copy it to mp3s will crash everything after about 2-3 minutes. somewhere between tracks 2 - 4. anyone else have issues? i have tried a different cdrom, and cables... and i hate to say it but it works under windows.

May 13, 2010I've experienced this problem with a distribution upgrade and then subsequently with a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. Basically half the time that I boot up Ubuntu, it completely locks up with the following messages on screen (Sorry, I had to take a picture since it was locked up)However, when it does boot correctly, it pauses for just a moment after displaying the above text, and then displays a few additional lines, after which it goes on to boot 'normally'.
The next lines show 'plymouth' and 'ureadahead' processes being killed. If these lines show up the boot continues normally, otherwise the boot process hangs at the first picture.It is pretty frustrating to have to perform a hard restart during nearly every other boot, and the hangs seem almost completely random. Sometimes, it happens a couple times in a row, sometimes I can boot normally several times in a row. It also doesn't seem to be related to a cold start, versus a restart.

I am Very new to Ubuntu and the forums, So i wish to apologize if this is posted in wrong section. Now on to my problem, While using my computer the screen will go gray(all open windows), and my HDD light stays on. I never had this problem before on my other computer that has Ubuntu on it too. And as i said every window goes gray and the HDD light stays on and it happens randomly. It will come back to normal some times but others i have to Force Power down.

Feb 2, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my old Toshiba Satellite laptop. I'm dual booting with another Linux distro - ZenMini Everything works O.K. running Ubuntu but I can't restart the system with out it locking up. I have to power down completely from Ubuntu. I don't have any problem restarting with ZenMini so its obviously an Ubuntu problem.
