Ubuntu :: Lilo Not Working To Restore Mbr

Jul 3, 2011

I have a Dell windows 7 laptop that suddenly is unable to boot: stops at a blinking cursor line after the Dell logo appears and is unresponsive (I can load the BIOS (F2) and the boot menu (F12) before the lock, but that's it). Unfortunately, I don't have access to the Win7 install disc, so can't use Microsoft's recovery tool.

Debian :: LILO / Chroot - "EBDA Is Big: Kernel Setup Stack Overlaps LILO Second Stage" Error After Reboot

Oct 16, 2010

I'm fairly new to linux, and a few days ago, as I was updating my system, I got the "EBDA is big ; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage" error after reboot. I use a 3- boot, ( Win XP / Debian / Debian) and Windows XP works fine, but I can't launch any of the Debian. I googled the message, and I found this link :
[URL]

The only problem problem is that when I try to chroot, I got another message, "chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory" I googled this message too, but found no relevant answers. I am now using a knoppix usb drive to try to repair the lilo, but I ran out of ideas ...

Ubuntu :: Restore Desktop - Common Fixes Not Working?

Jan 20, 2011

I am trying to restore my desktop to how it was, what I assume is default. Some background. I am not new to computers but not an advanced user by any means. While very comfortable in Windows, with Linux I feel like I am trying to learn a foreign language by reading a translation dictionary. Most times things go right but when things go wrong I have no idea why. I am running Xubuntu on an ASUS 701. I installed it based on these directions:[URL]

By the way under Sytem Monitor I am told I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) Kernel Linux 2.6.32-27-generic GNOME 2.30.2. I'm not sure what all that means or if it is relevant. I have been thrilled 70% of the time. Twice I have had to do a complete reinstall because so far that is the only way I have found to fix it when things go bad. I am hoping that this time I can avoid that. This morning I installed Wine from WineHQ and followed the directions on this page: [URL] That didn't work so well for me. Somehow it took up 2GB of disk space, scrambled my desktop and Thunderbird no longer worked. I reinstalled Thunderbird but that resulted in losing my inbox I uninstalled Wine but can't figgure out how to free up 1 GB of installed applications, I'll ask about that in a sepatate thread. I have searched and tried all kinds of tips and tricks on fixng the desktop. Deleting /.cache. Deleting /.config. Nothing. My final attempt was following the intructions here: [URL] Still not fixed. I tried all of the steps. Previously I had a tab labled "Apllications" in the upper left hand corner. Next to it was "Places" Then a button for Firefox. The Shutdown door button was in the upper right hand corner. My battery status, network status and clock were to the left of the door.

Ubuntu :: Minimize/Restore Button Not Working Properly?

Jun 29, 2010

I have just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop machine (Dell Dimension 4600) and am in the process of becoming familiar with it. So far, I like it. Especially the boot-up speed. I like the users manual also. I notice one thing, though, that doesn't seem to be working right the three buttons on the right side of the titlebar that close, minimize and maximize the window. The minimize button is supposed to remove the window from the desktop and indicate the minimized window on the bottom panel so that you can click it and restore it. It doesn't work that way in my install. In fact, I cannot minimize and restore the window at all. The three buttons, from left to right, close, reduce/enlarge, and close. I don't think that is normal, is it? And how can I get it to work correctly?

Software :: Computer Will Not Restore From Hibernate - Just Does A Normal Boot - But Suspend To Ram Is Working

Mar 8, 2011

I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it).

I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).

Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each suspend suspend block a resume suspend block, but hibernate hibernate' is not followed by resume hibernate` ( I assume that this is not correct. )

Update on what I have discovered: I have discovered that the uswsusp package is missing from debian squeeze. I could get it from testing or unstable repository, but have to be careful about not pulling in other dependencies. I would like to know if it will fix it. Is uswsusp needed for hibernate. Or should pm-utils be enough. (suspend it ram is working fine.)

Ubuntu :: Modify Lilo From Boot Cd?

May 28, 2011

Is there a way to run the lilo command from the ubuntu 10.10 boot cd? It doesn't get the directories right, as it has / mounted as the ramdisk memory file system, and / can't be demounted since it's busy. I can install lilo in the ram after booting from the cd with sudo apt-get install lilo. Mounting / to my sdb1 partition (where Ubuntu is installed) does not get the proper "maps" for the lilo command, since the cd ramdisk / takes priority. I prefer not to use grub, as I wish to use windows vista's bcd(edit) as the main boot selector and it won't boot grub from bcd to a partition; at least I couldn't get it to work in 11.04. I got lilo to work from the vista's bcd menu in 11.04, but had many glitches. Windows allows this type of proceedure from its recovery cds.

General :: Get LILO To Boot Ubuntu?

Sep 13, 2010

Old Setup: I HAD Ubuntu 10.04 (Fresh Install) and Vista. These were booted using GRUB as installed by Ubuntu.

New Setup: I have added Slackware. This has replaced Grub with LILO.

Problem: I have setup liloconfig so recognize each OS. Vista works great, so does Slackware. However, when I select Ubuntu: "Ubuntu is in Low Graphics Mode". Followed by a system crash.

Question: Ideally id like to simply stick with LILO. Is there a simple way to achieve this?

Note: some, on other sites, have suggested installing GRUB from Ubuntu LIVECD, however I am concerned, since I have no boot disk for my Vista that I might make it impossible to boot Vista if a GRUB problem is encountered. So ideally, id like to simply figure out how to work with LILO since it already works with Slackware, and Vista.

Slackware :: Can't Add Ubuntu Into Lilo.conf

Jan 10, 2011

I finally installed Slackware and now I have Windows, Slackware and Ubuntu in my laptop. I installed Ubuntu at the last order and at that time GRUB the default loader. But I feel that I'd like to use lilo more, so I booted into Slackware and run "lilo" and then lilo became the default loader.But then I cannot access Ubuntu anymore. Because in lilo there're no information about Ubuntu. So I added some information about Ubuntu according to that of Windows in lilo. But that failed. I still cannot access Ubuntu. I searched for the posts about this problem, and this is what they say:

Quote:

image=/ub/vmlinuz
label=ubuntu
read-only
root=/dev/sda7
initrd=/ub/initrd.img-2.6.28-13-generic

or something like this. But in my slack I cannot find the image or the initrd.

Slackware :: Add Lilo Entry For Ubuntu?

Jun 30, 2010

I'm currently dual-booting slack 13.0 and ubuntu 10.04 When slack was originally installed, I had an earlier version of ubuntu on it, and lilo did not pick up the ubuntu. At that time, I didn't care, because I had no use for the 'old' ubuntu. When I installed ubuntu 10.04, the boot config file (/boot/grub/grub.cfg) did include an entry for slackware. Great! I am looking forward to upgrading slack to 13.1, but I want to make sure this time that I can also boot ubuntu, should I need to use it.

1)Slack installation instructions that would enable me to include the other distro in the initial install

2)Instructions on how to edit andprocess lilo.conf after the slack What follows is a dump of df from the ubunutu 'side'..

Code:

tim@bart:~$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda6 52866604 6227476 43953640 13% /

Slackware :: Booting Ubuntu 10.04 With LILO?

Aug 31, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a spare partition, but didn't want to install Grub since I'm sure Ubuntu isn't going to be around for more than a little test drive. The problem I have is that lilo doesn't like the initrd.img file, complaining that it's too large. I'm assuming this file should be in the initrd line for the lilo entry. If someone is booting Ubuntu 10.04 with lilo it would be nice to see the lilo entry or any tips.

Slackware :: Can't Add Ubuntu Into Lilo.conf?

Jan 10, 2011

My thread "Can't add Ubuntu into lilo.conf" was merged with this one.That problem has been solved, As I solved that problem, I got several more questions: When applying the changes by run "lilo", there's a warning about "large-memory". How come and how to solve? When loading into lilo, there's a capital character "U" in front of "Ubuntu". At the same time, there's nothing in front of Slackware or Windows. I wonder why. And, now that lilo read the booting info from slackware, if sometimes slackware get collapsed, could I still be able to access lilo? If I can access lilo, can I still boot into the other OSes?

Slackware :: Lilo Can't Boot 13.1

Nov 8, 2010

i installed slackware 13.1, previously i had slackware 13, i made the following partitions:

[Code]...

everything went fine until i rebooted slackware after installation. lilo didnt boot at all, just a black screen. i booted with the DVD, and checked the lilo config file. the contents on lilo looks fine, just like any other lilo on google. for example i have this: boot = /dev/sda

i installed lilo on the MBR., i then changed this to boot = /dev/sda1 , on root and nothing same thing lilo always complains at the end: Partition entry not found , but how come , /etc/fstab shows all partitions are mounted ,( i am doing this in KDE environment). i reinstalled again , same thing. I also get a warning: video doesnt not support VESA mode, i changed to vga = normal again it complains that video doesnt support vesa even when i set it to normal, (note that i am running lilo after i made those changes, even rebooting , and same thing happens.

when i installed lilo, it let me choose video modes for the boot screen because lilo showed that my video card supports vesa mode, but then it doesnt boot at all. did slackware 13.1 changed so much that my laptop is no longer supported?? everything was fine with slackware 13 or is it because slackware needs a separate /boot partition, if so how come i just installed slackware 13 with just / and swap?

General :: Booting Fedora Dvd From Lilo?

Sep 7, 2010

I attempted to install slackware 13 on my laptop and was moderately successful. However in the process of attempting to configure it I appear to have messed something up. After reading about the problems I'm having I decided it would probably be easier to remove the current installation and start over.

I am now trying to install fedora from the dvd, but for some reason the computer will not boot the dvd. I have set the bios to boot from the drive first, and have tried burning the dvd twice, but every time the dvd spins up and shortly thereafter the computer loads lilo. Have I simply burned the dvd wrong twice? I used disk manager on mac os x and the disc reads just fine on the mac that burned it, but still no luck booting.

Software :: Lilo For Two ATA Hard Disks

Jan 23, 2011

I am booting Slackware 13.0 on an X86 from a (master) ATA hard drive. I have added a second (slave) hard drive that contains an installation of Slackware 13.1. This works in so far as I can boot 13.0 from the master drive, then mount the slave drive and read and write files to it. So the hardware is basically working.What I want to do is configure lilo so I can choose to boot either 13.0 or 13.1. So far I have not gotten this to work.

Under 13.0 the slave disk appears as /dev/hdb. The root-partion for 13.1 on the slave is the first primary partion on the slave, and appears as /dev/hdb1 when viewed under 13.0. What stanza should I add to lilo.conf to make the slave 13.1 bootable?
