I recently switched from windows xp to ubuntu and have been very impressed so far. However, I've run into a bit of a problem. My laptop has a switch on the side that enables or disables the wireless card and every now and again its inevitable that someone accidentally switches it off. When I had windows xp all you had to do to re-enable it was to go to the device manager and turn it back on however ubuntu apparently doesn't have a device manager. so I need help. my wireless card info is05:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)
let's say I've got one .avi video with a film with its original audio language (e.g. english) and another one .avi video with the same film but with a second audio language (e.g. re-dubbed in italian). Is it possible to get only one .avi video with the film and the two audio languages selectable?
I just installed lubuntu.I don't see the possibility to share resources in my lan: there isn't the contextual menu item "share files or folders": why? is this normal on lubuntu? I have already installed samba
I used to have the date and time in the upper right hand corner and then yesterday morning it was just gone. I can't figure out how to get it back up there. I've looked everywhere I thought it would be to put it back on there and I've had no such luck.
I have assigned ip address to laptop by editing /etc/network.interfaces. From next reboot the Network Manager Applet which was present on right hand upper corner, disappeared. I wonder why? This has happened with 9.04, 9.10 and now in 10.04. Another question is, are Network Manager settings (ip) and /etc/network/interfaces do correspond to same thing or not? As I have narrated above, since network manager applet is no more visible how to see the physical network cable connectivity status (as we do in windows xp)? (is there any other app of such kind or what?)
My nice language bar (the switcher / indicator En->Ru) on the task bar got disappered for an unknown reason and I seem to have no idea how to get it back. I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 and KDE.
All the installed languages are listed in the pull-down but, except for English. they are all grayed out. I can't switch to anything. I even tried uninstalling the English, leaving only Korean, and rebooted, but it still rebooted to English (and still listed Korean as the only language available). It said the system was incomplete and I needed to download some software, so I did, but that just resulted in English returning to the menu, which was selected and everything else still grayed out.
I have installed LXDE recently and I'm very happy with it,but there's one problem, which is that i can't switch the keyboard layout to another language, which in my case is Arabic, how do i solve this problem?
I have a primary language, Italian, and I want also use a secondary language, English. I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.
1)is this a bug or I forgot something? 2)which is the differences switching languages by yast and by kde system settings? 3)Is it possible to switch language and don't restart or logout the system?
I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).
I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?
One computer .... three users .... three languages. How do you make that happen? User A speaks English and is happy with English. No problem. User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?
While installing Ubuntu 10.10 I chose the wrong language for my keyboard. I tried to fix this in keyboard preferences and it seemed to work. The correct one I need is USA (and don't know exactly the difference between USA and USA alternative international). But every time I boot my laptop I get the old language back (Dutch) while USA is above the others in my preferences.
In the /var/log/messages log I have the following fail:Dec 13 13:24:50 mailserver kernel: ipmi_si(SI_CHECK_BMC): Failed to get Global Enables 0xc6.What does this mean?It is a HP server...Linux debian etch, kernel 2.6
i recently got a french msi wind U100x running on linux suse enterprise 10 sp1. (i am french and wanted a light netbook with french keyboard)i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping.because i am more used to english for settings, i set the main language to english, but it seems that it automatically reconfigures my keyboard mapping to english as well, so that azerty becomes qwerty.i reset it back to french, so now my keyboard is french, but so is the system.is there a way to differentiate keyboard from main user setting language?
I wanted to know if there was a firewall program out there that can open specific ports when a program/process is run and disable the ports again when the program is closed.
I recently got VMC and cant get it to work on my OS, tried searching everywhere but only can find help with I386 OS which I believe is for 32bit machines because I got this message "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: ozerocdoff" when I tried to install software. One site had links to some sort of drivers, but the pages are invalid and wont load. Is there any software/drivers that can enable me to use VMC on my 64bit machine or must I continue having to revert back to windows? If so could someone please add links?
enables a full screen mode in Gnome. I was previously able to do this via the KDE menu. The main purpose for this, was to get mplayer working in full screen mode when watching my media links. I am now unable to do this since switching to gnome.
I refrained from posting this in the Kernel Vulns thread earlier, due to its zero-day status. But now that the issue has been Slashdotted, there's no use in keeping us from publicly discussing this vulnerability. The link to the article (from which I quote below) is here. Brad Spengler's original announcement on the Dailydave mailing list is here.Quote:A researcher has published exploit code for a new vulnerability he discovered in the Linux kernel. The vulnerability is an especially interesting one in that the researcher who discovered it, Brad Spengler, has demonstrated that he can use the weakness to defeat many of the add-on security protections offered by SELinux and AppArmor.
