Ubuntu :: IPhone No Longer Mounts - No SSH Option

Sep 25, 2010

I have been able to plug my iPhone in, and Ubuntu (10.04) has been able to see it immediatly. I was able to browse any pics etc. AND, I had the ability to SSH into it (Places>Connect To Server). In the connect to server dialoge, I clicked on the drop box and had several options including SSH. Now, there's nothing in the dialogue except "Custom Location". So, what happened? My iPhone no longer mounts and I have no SSH option! And I have not updated anything and made changes. I have tried 2 different cables and different USB ports.

Ubuntu Installation :: After 11.04 Upgrade Hard Disk No Longer Mounts

May 11, 2011

I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. I did a clean install of 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to the 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive.

When mounting from file browser:
Code:
Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

The end of dmesg said the following:
Code:
dmesg | tail
[49.853308] wlan0: associated
[50.084874] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
[52.859533] Intel AES-NI instructions are not detected.
[52.890955] padlock_aes: VIA PadLock not detected.
[60.710006] wlan0: no IPv6 routers present
[82.130904] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks) .....
[96.010858] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks)
[107.791812] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks)
[322.758948] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks)
[516.932403] EXT4-fs (sda): bad geometry: block count 122096646 exceeds size of device (122096381 blocks)

For some reason my hard disk has a block count greater than the size of my device. I've done my background searching on this and tried a command line utility I've never heard of before:
Code:
# sudo e2fsck /dev/sda
e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 122096646 blocks
The physical size of the device is 122096381 blocks
Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!
Abort<y>? yes

And this is as far as I've got. I'm really hesitant to start fiddling around and experimenting with possible fixes because the backup data on this drive holds a decade's worth of work for me and is extremely valuable (hence why I have a spare drive for backups). I really didn't think that the Ubuntu upgrade process would mess with this drive, seeing as the Ubuntu install was contained on an entirely different drive. Any safest way for me to recover this data? Data preservation is the #1 priority for me here. I need to copy all of this data over to my primary drive where Ubuntu is installed. After that, I can reformat this "broken" backup drive.

Ubuntu :: /etc/mtab And /proc/mounts Do Not Show Tune2fs Mount Option

May 23, 2011

I just discovered that you can automount an ext4 filesystem with acl enabled by running "tune2fs -o acl". (I knew about tune2fs but did not dare to use it until now). However, the acl mount option does not show up in /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts. Can I ignore this, or is there a way of telling the system about the actual mount options?

Edit: I can do "tune2fs -l <device> | grep acl | awk '{print $4}'" and if that isn't empty I can update /etc/mtab with "mount -f -o remount, acl <device>", but like the udev rule I previously messed with this seems lumberingly unelegant to me.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Iphone 4.3.3 Will No Longer Work With Banshee / Clementine Or Rhythmbox

Jul 3, 2011

When my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.

well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..

Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Mounts Cause A Hang On Reboot Of The Mounts Are Lost

Nov 24, 2010

I have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.

Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.

These are the lines in my fstab

I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.

Ubuntu :: Startup-Manager No Longer Shows No Of Kernels Option?

Dec 5, 2010

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

OpenSUSE :: Ark "Extract Here" Option No Longer On Context Menu

Jun 5, 2010

Up until an hour ago, my openSUSE 11.0 KDE 3.x Konqueror had the usual Ark archive extraction options on the context menu. An hour ago, during an extraction operation, Ark and/or KWin crashed and I had to log back in.

Now the Ark extraction options are no longer on the menu. All I have is the Ark "Extract To..." option.

What happened and how can I fix it? And yes, I have all the required integration plugins, etc., the thing was working fine for the last two years. Now it's broken. Where is the config file or lock file or whatever that I need to find to fix this.

Fedora Networking :: Samba Broken / Error 6291, The "force User" Option Is No Longer Working?

Jun 15, 2009

I ran "yum update" on 03-06-2009 and it updated my samba version from

3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64
to
3.2.11-0.30.fc10.x86_64

My network shares then became read only! After some digging it turns out my system is not working because of Samba bug 6291, the "force user" option is no longer working.

Ideally I would run another "yum update" and that would fix the problem. Apparently the bug has been fixed in Samba 3.4.0pre2 - when can when we expect that to be released and included when I do a "yum update"?

Alternatively how do I get back to version 3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64 ?

Slackware :: Different Mounts Of Same Ext Hd

Aug 8, 2010

On my same box are two slackware-installations: one slackware64-13.1 and one slackware32-13.1.

There is an ext Hitachi-hd plugged on my box. With slack64 the ext hd has the uid of the normal user, so I can copy files onto it as user. With slack32 the ext hd has the uid of root, so only root can copy files onto it.

The mounting is "on the fly" with power on/off of the ext hd and NOT set in fstab. How can I change the "automatic" mount-defaults in slack32, that the uid is set to normal user instead of root?

Ubuntu :: Totally Screwed Up Audio And Mounts

Jun 29, 2010

I had it working perfectly everything worked including my headset. The only problem was certain programs were too quiet for my taste and seeing as i have a laptop and cant manually turn up the speakers i looked for a solution and found

Code: [URL] I followed those directions to try and boost the poor sound volume that has plagued me in ubuntu distros. Instead sound sparsly works. It is quieter than was, and if chrome is open at all no sound will play at all in rhythmbox or amarok(the play button dont even works it just sits at 0:00) Only after chrome closes does it play my music files again but only on this partition. As now my windows partition thats also located on this fakeraid just magically disappeared.

how to fix this as i dont even know what i did to begin with. how i can trash kde and start over from within gnome(havent tried to see if it works there yet though) EDIT: Logged back in to gnome and everything works fine. The missing partition is auto mounted like i wanted, the sound is perfectly fine. Obviously something got screwed up in the kde config but i dont know what or what to look for as i have never used kde before.

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Randomly Mounts On Boot

Upon reboot, sometimes it would mount automatically and sometimes it would not. I have not discovered any specific pattern. It is very random. Sometimes it would go many reboots without mounting and on the next it would mount it. I tried putting timeo paramter, played with the parameters, but still have the same issue. My laptop is connected to a wireless network. When I do mount -a or if I go to Places everything mounts great. It just simply will not mount all the time automatically upon boot, and after wireless connection is established.

Ubuntu :: NFS Mounts Failing At Boot With DNS Errors

Jul 14, 2010

I have several NFS entries in my /etc/fstab file. Each entry generates an error during boot (from /var/log/boot.log):mount.nfs: DNS resolution failed for macpro.dpc: Name or service not known mountall: mount /mnt/BaseLines [656] terminated with status 32

This occurs even if I specify an IP address in fstab rather than a host name. I was really surprised by that. The odd thing is that by the time the system is up, not only is DNS working as expected, but the NFS shares are mounted as expected. I'd just ignore it for now, accept that it prevents Apache from starting since some of the server's files live on the NFS shares (this is a development system). It appears that the DNS resolver isn't running when the mounts are attempted and that they are attempted again later, after the resolver is running.

I did an
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade....

Ubuntu :: Boots And Mounts A Dummy Directory?

Oct 17, 2010

I had a problem with Ubuntu 10 trying to mount a non-existent directory, mount/DRIVE_F/R&RMT . It would post an error message, wait for acknowledgement (or timeout).

The only cure for this incredible annoyance was to manually create the missing directory and path.

This works, EXCEPT THAT now instead of the (Gnome) desktop coming up, the empty directory I created comes up, and I have to close or minimize it.

I can't find where in the boot process the command to mount this occurs.

I need a clear explanation of the complete boot process from cold boot to Gnome GUI exposition.
