Ubuntu :: 699MB 10.04 File Too Large For 700MB CD?

May 2, 2010

I am attempting to burn the ISO for Lucid Lynx final onto a 700MB CD. The ISO file is 699MB, but Windows reports that the size on disk is 733MB and thus CD Burner XP refuses to burn the file, stating that it's too large for a CD.

Why this discrepancy on file sizes? I've noticed this with other files as well, suddenly it's a bit of a problem, as you can see!

Software :: Install LYX Without The 700mb+ Of Dependencies?

Jun 20, 2010

I tried to install Lyx today, but because of the massive overhead I decided to install it without its 'recommended' packages. From previous experience some of these packages were just the same font in different sizes that rendered font selected in other word processing applications tiresome as I scrolled through the list.

Code:
apt-get install lyx --no-install-recommends

Only 8mb of disk space was needed! But at a cost.

Although AFAIK as a user that has only spent fives minutes at LYX ( 4 of which gawking at how easy it is to write mathematical symbols in ) the segment that does not work is the 'rendering' where I cannot export as dvi, pdf etc.

When I open a document, I get this error:

Quote:

The layout file requested by this document, article.layout is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX class or style file required by it is not available. See the Customization documentation for more information. LyX will not be able to produce output.

What packages are absolutely necessary for LyX to work at a bare minimum? My monthly Internet usage is capped, and 700mb is a massive blow to it.

By the way, the documentation it recommends me to read ( 'Customisation' ) contains information applicable to creating new layouts and/or why I do not have someone else's layout that this document requires. It is obvious however that 'article.layout' is a standard component, and is probably inside on of the many recommended packages.

The download of recommended packages is ~ 400mb, but once extracted is ~700mb. That is still a large download for my internet connection currently.

Code:
The following NEW packages will be installed:
dvipng lacheck latex-beamer latex-xcolor libt1-5 lmodern luatex lyx pgf
preview-latex-style prosper ps2eps psutils texlive-base texlive-binaries
texlive-common texlive-doc-base texlive-extra-utils texlive-font-utils
texlive-fonts-recommended texlive-fonts-recommended-doc

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Copy A 700MB .avi To A USB Stick

Apr 16, 2011

Been using 11.4 for the last few days and I think I might really like it. Thought getting my Broadcom wireless to work would be the hard part but I'm having real trouble with USB transfers for some reason. Tried to copy a 700MB .avi to a USB stick yesterday, I know it's good as I use it regularly. I get the KDE notification that it has copied the file (seemed far too quick but didn't think much of it) and then went to watch it.

Didn't show up on my telly and when I stuck it back in the computer to check it had only copied an arbitrary 39MB of the file. Tried again this morning, copying three albums to my phone - I get the notification that copying files has been completed almost instantly, I let it sit for five minutes and of the three albums one track has been transferred. It's an Android phone so I can use a file browser to confirm they are there, but they're all 0 bytes in size.

Ubuntu :: Adding Tags To The FLAC Files?

Apr 16, 2010

You will need "cuetag" for this which is part of the "cuetools" but since you already installed it (see previous seps), all you have to do is open the terminal, navigate to the folder where you just splitted some APE or FLAC files and type this:

Code:

cuetag *.cue split-track*.flac ;

(if you didn't change the file's name from split-trackNN.flac). All the split-track*.flac files will have tags in just a few seconds.so i did exactly what i was suppose to do but for some reason is still could not add the tags to my FLAC files..

Code:

kon@kon-laptop:~/Desktop$ cd *ora*

Programming :: Adding Some Code To Like 50 PHP Files

Jan 15, 2010

I need to basically add some code to like 50 php files. It's basically a script that I want to add near the end of these 50 php files. I figured I could use sed to replace </body> with the code. However the code, is very long and has a bunch of newlines obviously. How would I be able to do this?
sed -e 's/<//body>/(all the text)/' *.php

Since it has newlines, I don't know how to paste it in cause it would take me to a '>' prompt without allowing me to complete the sed command. I want to insert this code.
Code:
<br><br>
<center>
<form action="test.php" method=post>
<textarea name="comments" cols=40 rows=6>

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Adding Data Files To A Multisession CD Using Brasero?

Jan 7, 2010

I tried the above using an existing multisession CD where data files were previously burned in a different pc using K3b. However, when the burning was completed successfully, the CD could not be read at all. I repeated the process with a blank CD choosing to leave it open in order to add more data later. All went well and the CD was readable but when I tried to add data to the same CD I got the message

Quote:

Appending new files to a multisession disc is not advised.

Already burnt files will be invisible (though still readable). Do you want to continue anyway?

I opted not to continue despite the temptation to see how invisible files can be read.

To sum it up, I find this turn of events absolutely appalling given that Brasero is the default software for CD burning in my system (Xubuntu 9.10). Can anyone tell me how to resolve this glaring shortcoming of Brasero so as to keep all my data files easily accessible in multisession CDs?

Ubuntu :: Basic Video Editing - Adding Transitions / Effects To AVI Files

Oct 29, 2010

I decided to try Ubuntu 10.10 after I had enough audio driver errors on my Acer netbook ( it came with windows wtf why errors) to drive me crazy. Anyway since I installed Ubuntu its ran better then when it was new my question arises here tho. I need to do some basic video editing (combine a few avi files, add transitions, add effects, etc) I don't need some end all to do all editor. just something basic like the windows. Video editor thingy was. So far I've tried pitivi which crashes, open soft which also seems to dislike me, and kdenlive which shows some promise but seems to be slow and needs libmp3lame.

I tried to install it and while my software manager thing says its installed kden says its not. I wanted to try lives editor but my terminal abilities are almost non-existent. Is there an editor I haven't tried that could be what I'm looking for? Is there a way to fix kden? I just want to edit the video and put it on Facebook. I'm willing to learn and I'm not a computer idiot just a Linux one. I really don't want go back to windows cause ill have to reinstall it and even when I do that with the disc Acer sent me windows makes a screeching noise even when then sound is off and locks up.

Debian Installation :: Adding Downloaded Deb Files To Cache?

Jun 6, 2010

I have a download cap therefore when I install Debian, I like to have a backup of all downloaded .deb files that I can install from rather than download all over again. From what I've read, it should be a simple case of copying the .deb files to /var/cache/apt/archives and then install using apt-get. But apt-get seems to 'ignore' them. Am I supposed to do something to get apt to use them? Bearing in mind, I need to do this from a console as there will be no DE.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Adding Third Drive Keeping Share Under Var Files

Aug 7, 2010

I am just starting out in linux and am a little confused about mounting drives. On my fedora pc, I have 2 x hard drives. When I originally installed the os, I had 1 drive with the default partitioning. I placed all my data into /var/files and had various folders under there e.g. music, video, docs etc. It didn't take long for this to fill up. So I added a 2nd drive and mounted it as /var/files which increased the space for all the folders in that directory. So my fstab has:
sda1 /
sdb1 /var/files

Now its filling up again and I want to add a 3rd drive. But this time, I want to separate my music from my video's etc but still keep the share under /var/files. So, do I add the 3rd drive, mount it as /var/files/music1, then transfer the music files from /var/files/music to /var/files/music1 and once the transfer is complete, delete /var/files/music, rename /var/files/music1 to /var/files/music and then mount sdc1 to/var/files/music? The bit I can't get my head around is the mount within a mount:
sdb1 /var/files is mounting everything under it including /music
If I add sdc1 /var/files/music how does it affect the mount point of sdb1
Am I better putting the /music under /var/music instead of /var/files?

General :: Adding A Files Creation Date To It's File Name?

Sep 17, 2010

I have some basic experiencing creating simple scripts/making directories/changing permissions/etc. but I'm stumped on this one.

I have two linux boxes. I have a script set up on box 'A' to SCP into box 'B', grab a copy of a database backup and store it on box 'A'. It looks like this:

scp root@X.X.X.X:/blah/blah/blah/dump.23.gz /home/blah/DB_Backups/

I have generated a public key on box 'A' and placed it into the authorized_keys file on box 'B', so a password is not required and the file copies over successfully when the script is run. On to my problem...

I need to know what date the 'dump.23.gz' file was originally created when I'm viewing it after it's been copied to box 'A'. If I ls -l on box 'A' it only shows me the date it was created on box 'A' when it was copied.

What would I need to add to my script to append the backup's original creation date on box 'B' to the filename so that when it gets copied to box 'A' I know when the backup was created on box 'B'. I'm sure this is probably confusing. I've done lots of searching and can only find information on how to append the current date and time to a file name. I need to append it's original creation timestamp to the filename when it copies over.

General :: Adding Custom Files And Rebuilding Live CD

Jul 13, 2011

I have been able to successfully build a live Linux CD, the problem is during the course of setting up my new linux instance on my latop I had to install a few items (intel drivers). So got all the files and everything worked after manually installing, but wanted to try to rebuild the CD with all the files in the CD, rather than having to use a USB drive to put the file onto my laptop. When I made the changes to the configuration that I previously used(just edited the chroot file and did lh_build again) nothing happened the binary was no rebuilt. So some questions: If I am wanting to add files into a live CD build how do I do this? How do I rebuild a CD? or Is it possible? (i.e. I have to continually start from scratch each time).

Ubuntu :: Hide Folders Or Files Without Adding Period "." To Rename File Or Folder

Jun 18, 2011

I am trying to hide some folders in Ubuntu Linux which are always hidden in Windows through File/Folder Attributes (attrib -h)

It is not an option for me to rename the folder from let's say "Ancient texts directory" to ".Ancient Texts Directory" because the programs associated with these files and shortcuts will not work in Windows. I would like to make the folder hidden by not renaming the folder. Is that so hard to ask?

Is there really no other way of making a folder or a file hidden in Linux just like in Windows by Applying Attributes? I Don't want to rename it by putting a dot in front of it. Moreover renaming a file by putting a dot in front of the name changes the position the folder appears in the list view. For some people this may be ridiculous, but for me with a few hundred files and folders and subfolders, this organisation is important, aside from the aforementioned reasons.

I need to maintain compatibility between the two operating systems' basic folder structure as i must use both Operating systems.
