I have messed up, I downloaded something about gnash through the repositories trying to get a flash player to feed my little house on the prairie on ..... habit(I know, addiction is sad). Anyway, it didn't work but now it won't let me remove it. I have flash player installed but it's doing the same thing as gnash by itself, I have black lines across the screen instead of a flash player. Is their some way I can force it to remove gnash?
I'm new to Fedora and not sure how things are done so please keep that in mind while you're trying to help me fix my stupid mistake. Thanks

Is there anyway to force gedit to be aware of changes made to file permissions? The thing is, sometimes I open a readonly file and I just go back to the terminal and set write permissions on that file, but I have to close and open the file again so that gedit saves it. Is there anyway we can make gedit aware of changes to file permissions?

When I run a script with nohup, the output is forced to the out.log file by default; is there a way to force the output to the screen instead of the file? I need to be able to see when my script gives me a "process started" message, and I don't want to clog up the system with log files.

Many folders within a subdirectory some of which have lots of data in and some of which have only one specific file called produkt.fil inside.I need a command to find and delete those folders that contain ONLY the file produkt.fil - if other files exist (doesnt matter what they are) then they should be left alone. Note: produkt.fil exists in all of the folders always.

When I ls -l /etc/passwd, -rw-r--r-- 1 root root /etc/passwd When I login as myself, and rm /etc/passwd, it asks: rm: remove write-protected file '/etc/passwd'? If I say yes, will it actually delete the passwd file?

In Windows when you delete a file, it really isn't gone.Have to have special software to actually wipe it.what programs in Linux/Ubuntu are along same lines.secure delete a file, secure empty trash, clean the hard drive unused areas (where files once were). Are they in package manager, synaptics or on the web?Update. I took the new Ubuntu system with me on road trip this weekend as a trial.Wireless network connection is from across street. Connected just fine.Hook Nikon camera in to D/L pics, "saw" camera immediatelyForgot cell phone charger at home. Used the USB cable. "saw" phone immediately and phone said charging. So, so far all is well just some things are done a little differently than windows!

I put a MicroSD card in to a card reader, it's from a Nokia mobile phone, and then plugged that in to the USB port. For some reason I can't delete certain files. I am assuming my phone has some kind of virus.Ubuntu refuses to let me access, modify or delete the files that are in the music folder but clearly not music files.
So I tried to open the folder with Wine to try and delete it the windows way (I have no idea if that was even supposed to work) and I get an error message that says 'File not Found' in a typical windows error display box.Now I am having the exact same problem trying to open my home folder from the places menu. The same error pops up.All I want to do is clear a MicroSD card and put new music on it.Also, I am the only user on this computer, and I have administrator privileges, and I cannot access the root folder or the lost-found folder.

I have moved all files from one hard drive to another but one file remains that I cannot move, delete or rename.
From a fresh boot, nothing nefarious running in the background...
Using Nauitilus, find a file called: .goutputstream-59R62U
It appears to be a 1.5Gb MPEG file. I can click on it and it plays in MoviePlayer. I can drag it into VLC and it plays normally. But I can't move it, delete it or rename it and I can't do the same to its parent directory or the parent of that directory.
Running sudo nautilus from Terminal it doesn't appear at all.
Running Gnome Commander it doesn't show up either. When trying to delete its parent directory (with permissions set to rwxrwxrwx) I get the following error:
Error while deleting ".goutputstream-59R62U"
File not found

My problem is with a file that I can't delete, or move for that matter.
My dad was just randomly saving pictures and deiced he wanted to trash it. I don't know what he did, but in no longer has a file name, just the extension jpeg. Now I tried to right click it and move to the trash, but that option isn't highlighted, same for the rename. When I try to move it, it says the file does not exist. Here is what is says exactly:
Error stating file '/home/ashley/Desktop/Ed/dads files/TV Shows/isis (joanna cameron)/jpeg': No such file or directory

If there are users in a network who have desktop Linux (any variety), is there a way to configure their computers to "require" them to save documents to the network? Like for example, redirecting their /Home folders to a network file server or not allowing them to save files to their local hard drives?

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

When I boot up my Ubuntu system I get the following error message:Install Problem The configuration defaults for Gnome Power Management have been installed incorrectlyI found the following posting and this describes what also happesystemhttps://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/111256I've created a recovery disk by using a memory stick from which I can boot. I can mount the old filesystem (HD). When I navigate, with the file browser, into one of the folder on the the HD and try to delete messages I get the following error message - 'Error removing file: Permission denied'.I guess I need to log / tell those files the root password from the system installation as per the version on the HD. But how do I do this?

I have a bunch of text files, all of them have a .txt extension. They are all located in subfolders of the /MyTextFiles folder (but could be anywhere, no idea what depth). If any line in any of the text files has the word "hello" I want to delete that entire line. I know sed and awk are made for this problem but I can't seem to get the syntax correct.

Ubuntu 10.04 Guest in VirtualBox
I'm trying to delete a file called
Code:
springlobby_config.h
I've tried:
Code:
rm -i *
which gives me:
Code:
rm: cannot remove `springlobby_config\.h': No such file or directory
Tried to rename it:
Code:
mv * abc
which gives me:
Code:
mv: cannot stat `springlobby_config\.h': No such file or directory
I don't think it's a permissions issue because usually the terminal would say permission denied, but perhaps I'm wrong.

I have a problem deleting a certian file from a NTFS format 1TB USB HDD.
I attempted to MOVE the file (x.avi) to another directory on the same drive. On the MOVE process I accidently cancelled it. I then COPIED the file to another directory, this copied fine so i just need to delete the original x.avi.note; when I now attempt to move the original x.avi I get an error message: "Error while moving "x.avi". There was an error moving the file into /media/1TB/Movies. More details: Error moving file: Numerical result out of range. (I'm assuming a corrupted file)?
Lastly, every time i attempt to delete x.avi, it puts the file in the wastebasket but doesnt delete it; Every delete attempt makes a new file in the wastebasket (e.g. x, x.1, x.2, x.3, x.5 etc etc).
All other files/folders are fine its just this 1 folder/file.

I just found out that I did mistake.I transfer 1 file into the Ubuntu Linux, but that File has a strange character. Take a look at the picture screenshot taken.free image hostingExplanation: 1) The file name is unknown, take a look at the WinRAR Archive (left window)2) The file name recognized in Ubuntu without any name, thus it appeared as Empty (right window: putty program). And via Command Line Interface, it appeared as Question Marks.

I can see them on my desktop but i cannot delete them. In the terminal, "ls" command does not show these files exist. "rm" will also say cannot find these files. How do I get rid of these files/folders?
