Ubuntu :: Gksu Prompts For Administrative Password
Apr 19, 2011
How to fix the problem that is happening with gksu. It prompts me for the administrative password. I don't (for advised security reasons) have a password associated with the root account.
The sudo works fine and accepts my sudo password. Gksu fails with "incorect password... try again." error.
This is a new install of the Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64 Maverick edition.

I'd like to be able to run gksu (i.e. the default windowed authentication) without a password. I tried to find this on the wiki and here on the forums but wasn't able to find anything. I've allowed 'sudo' to run without a password:
Code:
<username> ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL
for my username but this has no effect on 'gksu'. As I am the only user on my machine and I have to enter a password on login

I have this issue on both Ubuntu and Lubuntu 11.04 64-bit on 2 different machines. I have not tested 32-bit.
When I run synaptic or update-manager it presents me with gksu, not gksudo as it previously did in previous Ubuntu releases, no matter how many times I try it will not accept my password.
I have even given it command line arguments to print the password to the terminal and it's correct.
I have found a workaround - by running gksu-properties and changing the mode from su to sudo it will now display gksudo and accept my password.
However, I want to know why it won't accept my sudo password for the su and gksu commands? There are no error messages which are outputted, the gui just says incorrect password.

The title says it all. Is there a way to just click ok to administrative tasks instead of having to enter my password every time? Sort of like Windows 7's UAC.I'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I don't want to log in as root

I am running Ubuntu 9.10. When I open Evolution, it prompts me for a password to the default keyring. I am not sure what this is, but I would like to not have to do this. I looked around in Evolution and did not see a way to have this password entered automatically. I searched this forum and it found no results. So I don't know if my problem is unique or not.

I know, I know, its a security feature. That doesn't make it any less annoying. I find the constant asking for my password to be every bit as irritating as Windows's UAC. When I want to use the terminal, or when I want to download something, I don't want to have to enter my password every time. I don't care that someone could theoretically do something to my computer in some way. I managed to stay out of harms way in windows with UAC off, I'm sure I can do it in ubuntu without the constant nagging of the password prompts. Its annoying and I am tired of dealing with it. Anyone know how to turn it off? I am really not looking for reasons to leave it on. Its the same with UAC: Yeah, it can keep you out of trouble. No, I don't want it on.

Just like the title says, if I were to try to run anything through gksu and accidentally put in an incorrect password, instead of the gksu window coming up again, it would just terminate.
Code:
theyain@theyain-laptop:~$ gksu update-manager
GNOME_SUDO_PASSGNOME_SUDO_PASSSorry, try again.
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts
Whats interesting is that it gives me the sudo error after only one incorrect password attempt.

Server A: Generated RSA Key
Server B: Added the RSA Key to authorized_keys list
SFTP from A to B.
Still prompts for password.
I will be sftp-ing both from Server B to Server A and 'A to B'. Sever B to Server A works fine. No prompting for password. But from A-B it this is what is happening sftp -v log...
debug1: Offering public key: ~InfAdmin-.ssh-id_rsa
debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password
debug1: Trying private key: ~InfAdmin-.ssh-id_dsa
debug1: Next authentication method: password
InfAdminATServerB's password:
Why is this trying id_dsa private key? From Server B to Server A when I do the same, it does not say 'Trying Private Key -id_dsa' This is what it says
debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277
debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA
debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey).
How do I enforce that Server A does the same? Why is it trying the dsa private key when I have used RSA.

I just installed Ubuntu last night on a partition, and so far..There is one thing that may be a deal-breaker for me though: It seems that I am always prompted for a password!!!! When I first start my machine up...PASSWORD! O-K, once a day wouldn't be so bad...but if I let my display turn off while I'm away from the 'puter...I come back, and...PASSWORD?! Every time I try to do anything on the system....PASSWORD?!
I did a few things that I thought might solve the problem- I checked some boxes here and there, like "automatically log on" and made myself an administrator....but no matter what I do, I'm plagued by the password prompt 600 times a day and i can't take it!!!
Is there any way to stop this nonsense? This is WORSE than Windows UAC crapola!! (at least with that, you just have to click a button)- As much as I am loving Ubuntu....if there is no way to disable this password nonsense, I'm afraid I'll be heading back to Vista. I'm the only person who uses my computer (Although I think my dogs were playing on it while i was out fixing the tractor today...)- so I just need to know if there's a way to get rid of all this password-protected stuff?

I have a standard home set-up for my Ubuntu OS, and I would like to know whether its possible to cut out the repetitive prompts to enter the password, as when you connect to the internet or access files on a partition that's not home, or install new software.

I have a Kerberos/LDAP/OpenAFS server running on Debian lenny, set up according to Davor Ocelic's excellent guide here (url). SSHd has ben configured to use GSSAPI auth and the clients have been configured to pass auth tokens through to the server.
My clients are all Ubuntu 9.10 x86 fully patched. On the clients, OpenAFS has been compiled and installed as a kernel module and git 1.6.6 has been compiled from source and installed. Otherwise, all software is stock Ubuntu repository-ware.
The setup is working fine as long as I connect to the primary server using its hostname:
peter@client01:~$ ssh nana
<connection goes through seamlessly without prompting>
peter@nana:~$
If I try to connect via a DNS alias (actually a second CNAME record), I get:
peter@client01:~$ ssh git1
peter@git1's password:
<connection completes>
peter@nana:~$
I need both passwordless auth and the DNS alias working, as it's internal policy that user connections are only ever made to service names, not real hostnames.
I have tried adding a second host principal to Kerberos for the alias (git1.darling.local) in addition to the host principal for the hostname (nana.darling.local).
If I turn off PasswordAuthentication in sshd_config, then "ssh git1" doesn't even fall through to passwords; it just denies logins. So it looks like it's not even using GSSAPI for the DNS alias.
So:
1) Is what I want even possible? I can't find anything that indicates that there's anything odd about DNS aliases such that this should happen.
2) Which config files should I post to help debug this? There's a lot and I didn't want to start blarfing them here if they aren't helpful.

I can enter my password just fine to log into the system, and using sudo from a terminal also works, but "gksu" does not. It tells me my password is incorrect. That means Synaptic doesn't work unless I "sudo synaptic" from the terminal. Anyone else happen to encounter this yet, or is it just me? I started with a clean install of Kubuntu 10.10, which I later installed ubuntu-desktop over and then removed. Would that possibly make a difference here?

I found a similar problem. The poster used a similar title "Administrative tools fail to open - karmic" I also have karmic and four tools fail to load; Ubuntu Software Center, Hardware Drivers, System Testing, and Update Manger. Synaptic and System Monitor run. I ran update-manager and software-manger and was told module pygtk does not exist. I ran "sudo apt-get install pygtk" and it said that did not exist as a package. The terminal update and upgrade also work.
Code:
me@me-laptop:~$ update-manager
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module>
import pygtk
ImportError: No module named pygtk
me@me-laptop:~$ software-center

Would the best solution be to reinstall the OS from fresh downloads as at least the Hardware Drivers tool works with the live USB?

Not too long ago I upgraded to 10.10 and after doing so, many of my Administrative GUI apps wouldn't work properly. For example, I can open the Update Manager, it will display all of the available updates but when I click "Install", the button "clicks" but nothing happens. The same behavior is displayed when trying to use the GUI to add a new user. I click the "Add" button but nothing happens. Similarly, if I try to change my graphics driver to the old version (not that I would necessarily want to) it tells me I don't have permission to do so. And Lastly, if I try to enable Visual Effects I get an error message saying that my graphics card does not support them.
All of this worked just fine in 10.04. And I'm not sure where something went wrong. I realized I can use gksudo for any of these applications and they work fine, however this is not really a solution for me because any time I log off, or restart, I would need to re-execute the commands to enable compiz and all that, and honestly, that's not how I want my box to work.
I thought maybe I had lost admin privileges, but I checked and I am in the "admin" group. I thought maybe somehow root took ownership of some of my configuration settings in my /home/<user> so I:
Code:
<user>@<user>-desktop:~$ ls -lar .*/* | grep root
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12288 2011-03-15 20:32 .rpmdb/Providename
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12288 2011-03-15 20:32 .rpmdb/Packages
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12288 2011-03-15 20:32 .rpmdb/Name

I find myself using SSH from my mobile phone to manage administrative tasks when I'm away--completing updates and the like, things that can be done during normal usage but sap my RAM and CPU to the point of frustration, given the hardware I've got to work with. It's convenient, I can do what I wish (without the benefit of an X session) while I'm at work. The issue I run into is the fact that my auth.log is littered with items like this:
Code:
May 16 12:53:17 BETA sshd[18941]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=200.111.184.180
May 16 12:53:19 BETA sshd[18941]: Failed password for invalid user lala from 200.111.184.180 port 41787 ssh2
May 16 12:53:25 BETA sshd[18943]: Invalid user master from 200.111.184.180
Which tells me that some inconspicuous person and/or botnet keeps trying to get into my system. This is generally annoying; at this point, my system isn't used for anything particularly critical; however, the fact that only failures or questionable successes--such as those from my mobile, the IP and Host of which can vary a fair bit (and the host resolution almost always fails, based on the way the IP/Host advertisement is presented to an external host is established--it's essentially manufactured)--doesn't tell me who/what has figured it out. I've done what I can to tamp down SSH access to the system, root is blocked via SSH (a moot item, since root isn't allowed locally), I've limited only my own username as allowed to connect via SSH...all it would take, though, is an alphanumeric dictionary that hits the right combination to get a password prompt, and to be able to brute-force it from there.
Overall, I know there's few, if any ways, to prevent someone attempting to get into my system via SSH; what additional steps can I take to minimize the possibility that I might end up compromised?

I have a feeling this may be a bit of a stupid question as it seems like one that must have a very basic answer so for that I apologise but I have yet to come across or work out the solution. The problem I have is that I cannot do anything that requires administrator priviledges from within GNOME without doing it directly from a Terminal using the su command. The reason being is that GNOME will not allow me to log in as 'root' from the normal login screen. So therefore I cannot do something as simple as edit a text file that is not in /home/'my username' as I do not have the required permissions.

I am new to this O/S. I have tried Mint and Ubuntu. There are some problems I would like to work out by myself before I take short-cuts, as if.I have tried to install codecs for my o/s media player and get a reply from computer "xxxx does not have sudoer rights, you will be reported."I tried to get sudoer rights and was told I had to have administrator rights first. To get administrator rights I needed sudoer rights. I decided to come to forums to ask and this is my first post.
Is there a danger in getting administrative rights? If so, I would still rather like to face the danger than not be able to play music. And how do I get real superuser rights? My root account is localhost.localdomain and my login account is XXXX. I would have access to everything rather than have a warning that the administration is receiving reports of my activity. Might anyone have help?

while using my pen-drive in fedora 14, a small dialog box appeared and before I could read it,it disappeared. It worked normally till I turned the computer down. Next time I used Windows XP. There were no files in the pen-drive but it still showed 5 GB used ( the same amount of data was there previously ). I restarted and switched to Linux. All my data was in a single folder named 'Found.000' . It showed nearly 400 objects , renamed as 'file0001.CHK'. They were all mine, merged in a single folder. I am helpless because I can not delete them (as I need them). I can get administrative privileges.
