Unfortunately I get only read permissions, while need write too.There are no any entries in fstab, so I do not know what does handle automounting and how to edit options to force mounting with write permission to user (root obviously can write). Are they hald options or any other app does this? Where to edit them? The drive is not permanently ON, just switch it when need, so it has to work every time I put it on.

The websites are located in /home/www/. This is where the guide I was following told me to put them. I also don't have a user named www.How can I give write permission to upload, delete, and edit all the files in /home/www/ for multiple users? They can connect to the ftp server and see the file, just not change them.

Share this folder, then followed by 2.allow others to create and delete files in this folder3. guest access.Now if someone in my local network edit any file and save it, it gets locked. if some one copy their file in this folder the permission is marked as "no group" "no owner". and they get unaccessible to me. i tried doing chown <user> <folder> but it says Operation not permitted. Suppose I have a binary program with only execute permission enabled for the current user. How (in general) would I be able to obtain a core dump of the file? I think I have read it somewhere but I want to know if there are more ways of doing it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to edit a C++ source file, but gedit wont allow me to save changes to it. Gedit says:
Code:
A file with the same name already exists. Please use a different name.
Right. Of course the file exists, I am trying to edit an existing file.
About the same happens with kate... Kate opens the file in read-only mode.
However, if I edit the same file with nano, editing and saving works. So the problem shouldn't be with access rights. Also "ls" shows rw rights to the file.
What could be the problem? I can use nano, but I would need the syntax highlightind, and other features of a better editor.
And whether I use sudo or not has no effect. The same happens with or without sudo, and I am the owner of the file.
PS. luckily I am still dual booting with Hardy. I can always go back.
Oh and this is a new installation of ubuntu 10.04

However, when I try to open or import a .pdf there not listed at all. When I looked in the file format filter drop down menu I don't see PDF. I look in synaptic for any additional packages I might need and I didn't find anything that helped. I also did find and useful documentation on the koffice website.

But got this message:

I have to do this after every reboot unless I edit the /etc/default/grub file (the second part of the tutorial). I'm not sure how to go about doing this since the article is very vague.
I have a few music videos in mkv format that are edited. I'm trying to replace the words that have been edited out, but having trouble aligning the audio and saving a finished product. In Windoze I would use Goldwave and/or Multiquence for any simple editing needs. I tried using Multiquence via wine, but it needs DirectX and winetricks isn't enough to alleviate the problem.
I figured there must be some similar apps available for ubuntu and there definitely are, however they're not for simple editing like I'm attempting and more for the advanced user looking to do multi-track creating and editing. I've tried to find online tutorials and help via searching but am just getting a headache.

but it is also not working i tried the comand gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst but it is not opening the file to edit since the graphical interphase is not there.
I need to edit my xorg.conf file. I can navigate to it in Terminal but do not know how to open it. If I navigate to it outside of terminal I can change it but cannot save the changes (not allowed) I can't seem to find a "how to" for this. (Debian 504 on a Toshiba laptop)
