Since I upgraded to 10.04, I went to launch gDesklets, and it will not launch. I looks like it wants to, spinning cursor and bar down in the task bar panel, but then it disappears.

When I do gdesklets check I got this message:

recently I installed gDesklets with some minor problems that I fixed along the way.. But now that it finally works, I don't see all the categories? For example, the System/CPU category is missing etc.. Here is a screenshot of gDesklets Shell open:So, the problem is that it's not showing all the categories needed.. So, any advice? Edit #1: I found out that what I was looking for was the SideCandy things from gDesklets.. And I tried Screenlets, but it doesn't have what I need and the look is not really me..PS. View 4 Replies View RelatedI just made the complete switch from windows 7. I'm looking for a weather applet and a currency conversion applet for my desktop.
I tried gdesklets but I couldn't get any of the weather applets to work. They couldn't find weather data. The weather part of my gnome-panel works fine.
I also couldn't find a simple currency conversion tool with gdesklets.
Ps: major kudos for anyone who can find a tv guide desklet.
When I run Conky on Ubuntu 11.04, then after some time it suddenly disappears (isn't drawn anymore on the desktop). With 'ps' I can see that the Conky process is still running, it just isn't drawing itself anymore. I don't know what exactly triggers Conky to disappear. Does this have something to do with Unity?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy family uses Ubuntu on two separate laptops. What happened on each of those laptops with the last ~10 days was that the top panel disappeared. I don't know what lead up to the disappearance on the first one, but this is what happened on the second one:The user closed the lid while Ubuntu was running. I don't know whether Ubuntu is set to sleep or to hibernate when the lid is closed, but regardless of that doing this never caused problems before. Yesterday when the lid was closed and then opened and the user logged back in, the top panel was missing. Still missing after a reboot. Had to be rebuilt.
Both laptops on which this happened are running 11.04 using the classic interface.Perhaps related is that on the first laptop the sound volume adjustment icon disappeared. I tried to add it back in but it's not in the list of widgets or applets or whatever Gnome calls them. How do I add the volume slider back into the panel?Is this a known problem?Is there a fix or a way of preventing this from happening again?I don't use Ubuntu, but I have direct access to these machines so I can run things and get info if you need such.

After rebooting the computer the USB external HDD I use for backup appears and is accessible at /media/OneTouch 4
A few minutes later I check and it's unmounted itself (apparently) because it's no longer there.
Restart the computer and it appears for a while once again, then disappears.
I login and its gone!

I'm trying to figure this one out, don't know why, but when I try to use my Asus USB DVD-Writer, to read DVD's, it will start to read the DVD, then all of a sudden just disappear as it was unplugged. I've tried different USB ports and same result, tried it on another computer and it works fine. When I insert the CD which accompanied the printer, the CD/DVD icon disappears from the Computer window. Where'd it go? I successfully installed the drivers on it onto my laptop (Windows Vista) without much problem.
Perhaps it should go on another thread, but I also downloaded the UnifiedLinuxDriver_086.tar.gz from the Samsung website, and unzipped it. Where to look for the unzipped files? I did stumble on them, and did install the driver from the deb file which was there, but when I try to print, I'm informed that there's a missing program called 'rasterto samsungspl' which needs to be installed. The unzipped files include five different ones with that name. Which one should I use, and how can I install the right one?
When my friend tries to login in to skype, skype just disappears. that means if he tries to write the loginname or the password it just disappears. and has to restart skype. and problem hapens again. skype 2.2 on ubuntu

I run / activate Skype.. 7 every so often (more frequently than not), when i'm not using it, it "dissapears" from my panel & i can't open it to chat with anyone. though i do see when people log in / log off - I'm not sure if they try & contact me or not.
QUERY :- What causes skype to drop off my active panel. Where does it go, & how do i get it back / active ? also how can I prevent it from dropping off. Ps - i cant re-activate a new skype, as the 1st one is still running.

When i enable compiz I lose my wallpaper and i get a back screen with no wallpaper no icons. But when i do metacity --replace all goes well but have no effects.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Conky, and have shamelessly copied from the many other conkyrc files posted here! I have Conky set to start up with a 15 second delay, and it does. But frequently when I close another programme (eg Firefox) Conky disappears. It's still running, and if I log out or reboot I see it for a flash, and it appears OK again when the system starts up.

I have reinstalled 10.04 several times and have the same result. After the install everything works and looks great. Then after the first power down and reboot the top menu bar and bottom panel are gone.
The desktop wallpaper (bare of anything) is there, still responds to right-clicks, etc, and the system seems to function, but the menu bar is missing. The extents of the desktop are still the same, so it's not the desktop extending outside of the screen display area (mouse doesn't disappear over the edge).
I can alt-F1 to get to the menu bar menu items, and they function - appearing from the top edge of the screen, but cannot activate them via mouse. I have reinstalled several times and this consistently happens every time. I had 8.10 on this box and it didn't do this. I reinstalled 8.10 and it was fine again, and then back to this with reinstalled 10.04. The 8.10 was a virgin install and I reformatted the drive on every install so there's no legacy crap clinging on.
I can use ctrl-alt-del to shut down/restart/etc., and alt-F2 gets me the command line. All seemingly functional.
I was looking in to a easy to use linux distro to surf the internet, do some text editing and emailing for my moms old laptop, cause its being very slow with windows xp on it.

I figured out Lubuntu would be al right, so I connected my usb cd/dvd reader(cause intern cd/dvd drive is broken) put in a disc that I burned with my other pc and started up the os. the live cd is working al right when its at the menu and I choose to start it it hangs for 30 sec-2 min then it starts to load and eventually the desktop shows up then I can start to do things but as soon as I open something the gui disappears before the program opens.
I tried to run the installer but I get the same issue. I see my mouse changing when I start the installer the mouse pointer doesn't points to the left side of the screen any more it points at the right side(which is strange) I tested this on my other pc and the installer loads up just fine and everything works ok(though I still have the mouse pointer issue if I start the installer)
btw if you got any ideas for a better distro these are the requirements: my mom is a linux newbie so an easy to use, lightweight distro for internet browsing, emailing and text editing(word) is needed. I think lubuntu will do? btw2: is there any way to import settings from the windows os to the linux os? btw3: dual boot should work just fine if I install this without deleting the windows partition right?

I'm supposed to run this dbgl file (front end for dosbox) in terminal like the tutorial i'm viewing says, but everytime i click "Run in Terminal", the Terminal shows up for a split-second and then disappears. Nothing else shows up. Nothing else opens.
I've just installed Lubuntu 10.10 to an Asus A2400H laptop. It has a Celeron 2.6 Ghz CPU and 512mb RAM. In the past I have installed Ubuntu and more recently Xubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. This time round I wanted to try out Lubuntu to get more speed out of this laptop but it's giving me crazy problems.When I run the Live CD all seems to work well and quick and there are no problems I can see. Then having installed it -- no errors during install -- when it boots up the fan goes at 100%, the only items on the menu are log off and something else of no use, but neither work. I can't load any of the main programs, but I can get to terminal and the update manager works, although it works extremely slowly.
I typed the 'top' command from the terminal and it says CPU usage is only 35% and only half the memory is in use, and no swap file.I have tried a reinstall and it's exactly the same. I've done the 'check disk for errors' and given the CD lens a clean because sometimes this has caused problems in the past, but it doesn't seem to be the case here given there are no errors during install (I watched the whole install... all 50 minutes of it).I have previously istalled LXDE on this laptop side-by-side with Xubuntu and it did have some fan issues and bugs but still worked for the most part, so I would have thought just having the one system would create less conflict.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and GNOME 2.32.0, when the notification message pops up in the top-right corner, my instinct is to mouse-over it and click the "x" to close it. But when I move the cursor over it, the box disappears.

I am trying to get my system up and running with motion (motion detection software).
After a reboot I have the video device /dev/video0
But then when I start the daemon

but now the devide /dev/video0 is no longer there and motion won't start up.

The only way to get the video0 device back is rebooting.

my Outlook on my windows box still show's the messages along with OWA

I activated the Global Menu applet (the old one that you can get from the Webupd8 PPA, not the new one that comes with Natty). I also activated the Window buttons and the Window Title applets. In effect, when I maximized my window with these applets activated, there was no title bar and no menu. I couldn't really get it to look very aesthetically pleasing, though, so I ended up removing all of them.However, now when I maximize my windows, the title bar is still gone. I've looked through gconf-editor and think I may have found the culprit, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it.
There's a leftover key from the Global Menu applet for show icon. When I was fooling around with the applets before, I set that value to "true" as default. I've tried unsetting the key. I've tried uninstalling Global Menu and cleaning the configuration files. I've logged out and rebooted. The key is still there.Assuming this is the issue (and I'm not sure that it is), what should I do here?
my problem is with Vmware Workstation after upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. Vmware dissapears when i do anything in it. I have posted a video for those who want to see the problem in action and i have a syncmaster t240HD as my monitor but Ubuntu says its an Unknown Monitor.

Update: Catalyst Control Center reports my monitor and the settings correctly.
I have installed Blender from Blender.org. I have installed it my home directory. After launching Blender the icon appears in the unity launcher. Then I fixed the icon in the launcher via the context menu. After restart the Blender icon does not reappear? How can I realize that the Blender icon shows up very time after starting Ubuntu?
