I have a system with couple of local user accounts. I setup /etc/profile with umask 027 so that I can use groups to control if users can access files they don't own. It works great but now I find that cron saves stdout and stderr redirections with an effective umask of 022 (everybody has read rights).My user cron tab looks like this:

Finally I managed to install my printer/scanner drivers.The last thing I need to do is to add the following two lines to 40-libsane.rules (which is a read only file):# Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes".How can I change permissions for this file or add these lines without changing permissions?

It has always worked. 2 Days back I switched to a different pc and now suddenly the script don't work.If I run it manually in the terminal it works. But when it execute with cron it doesn't copy any files to the backup destination. It starts but doesn't copy anything.Can someone help me as to why it works manually but not with cron ?

It seems that cron is not upgrading my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server, no GUI installed. I changed /etc/crontab and watched apt running:

I put in my cron entries to run my backup script which rsyncs my data to my 2nd drive, however on a hunch I checked my backup drive which mounts automatically via fstab and I realize it had not ran in a while. I checked cron and there were no entries for it. I got to wondering if I should ever be worried about a cron update coming down and over-writing my existing cron file with the backup entries in it to run.

Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.
I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have system at work I am setting up that runs on linux, it was powered up back in september but we didn't get the details to configure until this week, unfortunatly var filled up with 100% spaced used due to a log file that keeps being written to until its intizilized, I can't just delete the file so (will not be recreated), I pulled it off and took it home and split it into a smaller file (from 740mb down to a 15mb chunk)I'm really just a linux newbie so can someone explain to me what the permissions are on the current file and then what chmod would make smaller file the same. clusternet.log is the orginal and clusternet1.log is the one i made from split. I know its read, write and execute (whats the r write after x on clusternet.log?) but I'm not sure on what it means in the position its in, the clusternet.log should have permissions only for root correct?

i am trying to set the file permissions for the log files "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and "/var/log/gdm/:0.log". These files seem to be created when a user logs into a whokstation (my guess so far). I am trying to comply with a security mandate that all log files in the directory /var/log are set to 0640. The two mentioned files always seem to have the permissions 0644, does anyone know where and when these filea are created and how I might set the permissions when the files are created

Do I just execute:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to have the files from /user/directory copy every hour to /backup/user/directory. It would seem that cron or crontab is what I need to use. Looking at previous posts and other documentation only shows how much I don't know. When I type crontab -e I get a blank file I can type into, seemingly using vi as the editor. I have no problem with that but when I type cron -l, I get my text after a message about "Do Not Edit this File". What I am reading just makes no sense, I am not understanding even the most fundamental aspects of cron or crontab. Where I can get the most basic of basic instructions to try to understand this function?

The script does exist. And so does the directory /home/usr/log and writable. /var/log/syslog only has a bunch of these:

I don't see any file gets written to the log directory. That suggests to me that cron didn't run the job, as confirmed by /var/log/syslog.
I have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).
The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.
The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.
I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)
I have set up a cron in /var/spool/cron/root

I can see in /var/log/cron that it is running every 15 minutes but it has no effect. It is not doing the commands in the bash script.
If I run /usr/bin/phplist.sh right in the shell it works great.
I have noticed that in the /etc directory there are some subdirectories of /etc/cron.daily and /etc/cron.hourly. Also I have determined that there is a service included as part of the Fedora OS 'crond' which I have started with the use of 'service crond start'. My question is this. If I drop an executable file into the '/etc/cron.daily' directory will it just run? If not what configuration files should I go about editing to run my executable daily? There seems to be a pretty large network of cron related files. I'm trying to make sense out of all of it.

why sadc (a front end for sar data collection) would append a "?" to the output file when run from cron? And more particularly, how should I correct it? I have a RHEL 5.4 system which is doing this.e.g./usr/lib64/sa/sadc -d 10 6 /tmp/test produces output file /tmp/test when run from the command line but when run from cron the file produced is called "/tmp/test?"
Normal system logging with sysstat, which uses the same sadc command (with a couple of other options, and none of the options -d, -F, -L affect this behaviour), produces output files /var/log/sa/sadd where "dd" is the day of the month. There does not seem to be any control over this within the sysstat start-up scripts, other than use of option "-" to generate standard output files, so I expect that the dd is being done within the code. Is this associated with the "?" ?.Whatever is going on, the appended query seems to get added to everything as it still happens if I make the output file /tmp/test_$(/bin/date +\%d).Is this a bug or am I missing something fundamental about cron?

A bunch of my .rtf files suddenly (within the last few days, not sure when) have the "Allow Executing File as Program" box checked under their file Permissions. So whenever I try to open an rtf document, it asks if I want to run it. What's up with that?
