Ubuntu :: Etc/rc.local Not Executed On Startup?
Apr 12, 2010
I usually set the transfer rate for wlan on start up because I dunno any other way of doing it. I find it weird that every other ubuntu versions can do rc.local at startup, even 9.10 xubuntu, but it didn't work for ubuntu.
how can I get the computer to run the script on startup? I tried to google for the problem but I only seen people mentioning the problem not the solution.

I'm trying to figure out how to launch rc.local before services like autofs is being executed during system bootup. The reason I wanted this is because I needed for my server to pickup a DHCP address from my college's DHCP servers in order to get an IP address. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an IP address any other way and the update-rc script is really confusing to use.

I thought the standard was that rc.local was executed before GDM and Nautilus loads. For some odd reason, my Lenny desktop is loading Nautilus before it decides to execute rc.local. This is causing me some serious problems.

I came from Windows and I am want to learn how C++ programs are compiled and executed in Linux. I read in "Thinking in C++" that the linker adds (by default) a startup module to the object files that an application should be made of. Now when I use g++, I can create an single object module out of a single source code file then execute it in the terminal like this:
./objectFile.out
How can this object file be executed while it doesn't contain the startup module? In Windows, object files usually get combined into an executable file (somthing.exe) then that executable can be executed, is this not necessary in Linux? does the OS perform required actions before it executes that object file?

I was messing around with my newly installed Archlinux, in a virtual machine (thankfully not my main computer) and now I cannot boot up. The issue is, I read that I could add commands in the rc.local file so that they would be automatically executed after booting up... so, I added the "pacman -Syu" command there, but it usually asks for a confirmation to continue, and that's why I think it is getting stuck there (it gets stuck just after running the daemons).
So, is there a way to stop the rc.local file to be loaded at startup?

I have some problems with rc.local. It wont execute a scipt of mine at startup.
The script itself works and if I run rc.local manually it works too...
The script to run:
Doesn't seem to be a lynx-issue. I've tried with hard coded text as message too...
The script lies under / and have chmod 777.
Running CentOS 5.5 (if you didn't get it, this script is for sending the external IP-adress to my email att startup. If a thief is stupid enough to start it connected to internet)

I have a script scheduled to run with Crontab at 5am each weekday. The script is all good and executes manually (is just a simple stop/start of a service)I have reason to believe that it is not executing according to schedule.I am looking to see when a script was last executed. The script is executing accordingly (long story short, I forgot it was Tuesday). I would still like to know how to check a last-execution time.

How can I find out which script runs and automatically mounts any usb drive inserted? This script seems to be faulty because it fails on ext3 disks but functions fine on NTFS or HFS+ disks. If I can find out which script it is maybe someone can help me fix it?

why a script is not being executed during shutdown. I have a script in 'init.d' that works properly from command line. It also works fine at boot. My problem is that it does not execute at all on shutdown. I am using all the standard rc.d stuff for the script. Here are my LSB tags:
Code:
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: setwebpage
# Required-Start: $network httpd
[code]....
When I check the rc?.d directories, the appropriate links are there with the proper NN. This script has to FTP a couple of files to a remote server so the network is required and the script should be run very early in the shutdown process. However, the first thing the script does is send a message via 'logger' indicating it is executing with the 'start' or 'stop' parameter. The 'stop' message never shows up in the log thus I have to conclude that it simply is never executed.

I'd like a way to see all of the devices on my local network and what their local IP address is. I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. (I'd like to do this without having to physically interface with my router if possible, and I am in an encrypted network if that matters)

I have installed a web server on my local network. Everything is well configured and web pages are shown correctly from Internet (outside the local network) using the domain or the public IP.The issue is if I try to see that web pages (using the domain or the public IP) from inside the local network. In that case the router config page (192.168.1.1) is shown instead of the web pages. From inside the local network I'm only able to see the web pages using the internal IP address (192.168.1.XX).

Basically, to save battery (extend battery life) of computer, I use these commands to shut off my dedicated graphics card:
Code:
cd acpi_call
sudo insmod acpi_call.ko
./test_off.sh
Now right now I have to do this manually. Is there some way for the system to execute these automatically when the system boots?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, but wanted to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox. After running Code: sudo aptitude install banshee I wanted to bind my "Media" button on my keyboard to run banshee; unfortunately, it still wants to run rhythmbox. Where can I change the default command executed by these keyboard shortcuts? I can't seem to find them in gconf-editor under apps/metacity/* and googling has proved fruitless in finding where this configuration file is located.
