I've setup dimdim (opensource, centos 5.3) and noticed yum & rpm commands fail when executed as root because it uses librpmio from openoffice3 instead of /usr/lib (I'm running from memory so I may have misstyped). But sudo doesn't have this problem.
How can root's search path be different, especially after I state /usr & /usr/lib at the top of /etc/ld.so.conf.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, but wanted to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox. After running Code: sudo aptitude install banshee I wanted to bind my "Media" button on my keyboard to run banshee; unfortunately, it still wants to run rhythmbox. Where can I change the default command executed by these keyboard shortcuts? I can't seem to find them in gconf-editor under apps/metacity/* and googling has proved fruitless in finding where this configuration file is located.

I got myself curious on the possibility to change user's permission to any command, or at least giving other users some command line "power".
It all started a few days ago, when another user here, had a problem so that the computer wasn't answering.
So, after waiting a while, chose to hit the Reset button and start the computer again.
Considering this situation, I thought myself that it would have been better to restart the computer, through command line, on any terminal (F1-F6). Anyway, this user is no administrator, thus wouldn't have permission to use the code...
So, is it possible to let other users to use such commands, in order to safe rebooting the system, without logging as root?

If I interactively ssh to a remote host and enter commands, I can up-arrow through the command history. If a script ssh's to a remote host and calls a command, it does not get appended to the history. How can I configure ssh or sshd so that this happens? I'd like to be able to have those scripted commands available in the history file when I log back in interactively.

I am trying to find a method or tool to know the exact command history of all my users.I have tried to use "psacct" ,but it is not solving my perpous as it is only giving the command name.means let say 10 users have used "rm" command to remove 10 differint files then I want to know which user has removed what file.
But psacct will only give me the command name like rm used bu the user name. Then I tried to use the "w: command but it is also not solving the problem..

I've searched these forums as well as Firefox's site, as well as searching on Google Linux but can't find what I'm looking for.In a nutshell, I want to keep a log of my users' browser history so that even if they clear history or set Firefox to not keep history, I can still view a log of what site they have visited. My hope is that I can write a script(although I'm a BASH newb it would be a nice little real-world project for me to attempt) that would keep info such as user, visit date,ip of visited site, just the basics. A great feature would be for the logs to be emailed to me for inspection but that isn't vital if I can navigate to the log myself.
For all I know this is already available somewhere in the log folders I just can't find anything. If it helps I'm running Mint 9 Isadora and Firefox 3.6.12

installed Ubuntu Server Edition and I've found that my first user has a bash history and I can turn on a coloured prompt by editing my .bashrc etc but new users don't have that!I did : useradd -d /home/newb -m newbpasswd newband the correct looking .bashrc file appears to be in /home/newb but it is being ignore by bash when logged in as newb. Instead I am presented with just a dollar prompt instead of "newb@server"how can I sort out my users with proper prompts?

I have a script scheduled to run with Crontab at 5am each weekday. The script is all good and executes manually (is just a simple stop/start of a service)I have reason to believe that it is not executing according to schedule.I am looking to see when a script was last executed. The script is executing accordingly (long story short, I forgot it was Tuesday). I would still like to know how to check a last-execution time.

why a script is not being executed during shutdown. I have a script in 'init.d' that works properly from command line. It also works fine at boot. My problem is that it does not execute at all on shutdown. I am using all the standard rc.d stuff for the script. Here are my LSB tags:
Code:
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: setwebpage
# Required-Start: $network httpd
[code]....
When I check the rc?.d directories, the appropriate links are there with the proper NN. This script has to FTP a couple of files to a remote server so the network is required and the script should be run very early in the shutdown process. However, the first thing the script does is send a message via 'logger' indicating it is executing with the 'start' or 'stop' parameter. The 'stop' message never shows up in the log thus I have to conclude that it simply is never executed.
