Ubuntu :: Dpi Settings For Kubuntu Setup?
Jun 25, 2010
I'm struggling to figure out the "right" dpi settings for my kubuntu setup. Currently ubuntu-karmic, kde-4.4.2, linux-2.6.33.2, and the new open source radeon drivers.I have a ThinkPad T400 with a 1440x900 14.1" display. That gives the display panel a resolution of 120dpi (see http://directedge.us/node/36).
'xdpyinfo | grep resolution' properly reports a resolution of 120x120 dpi.
However, 'grep DPI /var/log/Xorg.0.log' returns '(==) RADEON(0): DPI set to (96, 96)'.I initially had my KDE settings set to 96x96 dpi, as this "feels" more "right" to me. When I set KDE to 120x120, 8pt text seems pretty big, and the fonts in my gtk apps go crazy-huge. OTOH, a 72 point font should always be 1 inch at the proper resolution, and that is about spot-on at KDE's 120dpi setting (at least in native kde/qt apps; gtk is another story).I just want to use my display at its native resolution and have it look good all the way around. why radeon is logging 96x96 dpi to xorg.log, when the display is clearly 120dpi? I'm currently running without an xorg.conf. Is there an option to force dpi that I should add there?

I just installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my Inspiron 1011, working great except it will not save my aspect ratio settings, I have it plugged into a 19 inch monitor, I have set the monitor at 1440X900 and disabled the built in monitor, but no matter how many times I correct it, when I log in both displays are on and set to 800X600. How do I make the settings stick?

This should be relatively simple, I've tried searching google for it already posted, but couldn't find the list. Would anyone possibly know what the default autostart settings are for kubuntu? Like, if you haven't changed much in your autostart, could you open that up real quick and take a screenshot and post it?. I was trying to remove one of the things I had in autostart but my laptops touchpad got stuck and held down the "remove" and removed 3 of the default applications.

When I change the display resolution and refresh rate in system settings, those values will be reset to default every time I restart the computer. Is there a way to save the values, so that I don't have to change them again every time? I use Kubuntu 10.4. Another problem I have is that when I choose Leave / Sleep (Suspend to RAM), the computer will sometimes be locked, so that it never wakes up again. I can hear when this occurs, because then the cooling fan(s) will stay on. Normally, when Sleep works, the fans are turned off, because the computer goes into energy saving mode. i noticed the occasional sleep problem already in Kubuntu 9.10.

I have been following a tutorial to get wireless working on my laptop. But the funny thing is, I can not find the hardware driver settings. In the tutorial they say: "Under the desktop menu System > Administration > Hardware/Additional Drivers, the b43 drivers can be activated for use." My KDE desktop looks like this:
[URL]
I am very confused and uncertain how to proceed. Besides this little confusion, is there a way to get the normal KDE desktop back? With the taskbar at the lower-side of the screen?

I am a new Linux user and Maverick Meerkat happens to be my first Linux system i installed. Setting up wireless was pretty easy in GNOME as it displayed my wireless system and i just entered the WEP key and i was all set.I decided to install KDE. After i installed KDE i wanted to setup internet There. However the KNetwork manager is not as friendly as Network Manager. It does detect my wireless router, but after i enter the WEP key it does not get connected.
It was asking me all sorts of question like SSID which i did not use in GNOME at all and neither do i know that information.I tried wcid network manager but removing network-manager and knetwork manager.wcid did get connected to my wireless but it was unable to acquire my IP address. (please do note that both k-network manager and wcid network manager work well with wired internet connection). Could you please help me setup internet in KDE? the truth is internet responds better in KDE than GNOME for my computer somehow.

I just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).
But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.
Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?

I was trying to setup gogui to work on kubuntu, using instructions found on an ubuntu forum: [URL]. I did not even have Java installed yet, so I first tried installing some of the sun-java6 packages. Usually kpackage is good at picking dependent packages and installing them also, but apparently not this time. Next time I tried using kpackage, I was not able to do anything. It gave me a message saying I had broken dependencies, and should use synaptic or aptitude. I do not even have these installed! I think that un-installing the Java software and starting over should do the trick, but I'm not sure how to do this from the command line. Also the instructions in the link above never worked for me.

I have a few questions about VBOX.
My system now is a dual boot computer with Ubuntu and Winxp each on there own HD. The system has 4gb memory with a 512mb Nvidia video card.
1. If I understand it correctly, VBOX installs it's own copy of Windows to a directory. I can't piont it to the Winxp that I already have installed on the other HD?
2. VBOX has a two sliders for Memory, one for System and the other for Video. Do any of you have a system such as mine and would you have any suggestions for the two sliders settings?

I am wondering if there is a basic tool out there that will work with graphics card powered by FOSS drivers that allows to adjust resolution (and configure secondary monitors) and then save that configuration so it can automatically be restored next time the system starts up.

I just set up a Squeeze server for a friend of mine using my exact apache2 settings. He has been playing around, having a bit of fun learning HTML, but he ran into a problem where one of his images would not display. I at first figured his HTML was incorrect, but after a very long time of trying to figure out the problem, I still do not know what is going on, so I think it must be an apache2 problem?[URL]..

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,

Restart your PC / lappy

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

I have a triboot windows suse 11.3 stable and suse 11.3 factory pc, I would like to share the browsers and email settings between the suse stable and factory, I succeed with thunderbird and firefox moving the /home/.thunderbird and /home/.mozilla in an ext3 shared partition and linking these in the respecive /homes, I found that there isn't a /home/.chromium folder, I found probably /usr/lib64/chromium could be the same as /home/.mozilla for firefox, but I don't know if is secure or can damage my system to move this in a ext3 partition and then link this to the respective /usr/lib64/chromium, /usr/lib64/chromium has root owner, root group, visible and modifiable for root and only visible for group and other.

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04
When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

I've been all afternoon trying to install Ubuntu Lucid on my fakeRAID 0 configured (2) HDDs and am unable to set GRUB up. The fake RAID setup is provided by Intel Matrix Storage Manager, it is correctly enabled and the BIOS is also correctly set up -- in fact, I've managed to install Windows 7 with no significant hitch. After struggling with partioning the drives (had to follow advice I found on a very helpful guide online [0]), creating the filesystems AND getting Ubuntu's installer to actually do what it is supposed to do, I now cannot seem to set GRUB up. My system, as it stands, is unbootable at all; via live CD only.
This is how the RAID0 dev is partitioned:
Code:
# fdisk -l /dev/mapper/isw_ecdeiihbfi_Volume0
Disk /dev/mapper/isw_ecdeiihbfi_Volume0: 1000.2 GB, 1000210694144 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121602 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 131072 bytes / 262144 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x6634b2b5 .....
