I have 4GB of RAM in my machine, and I am using 32Bit Ubuntu Lucid, I was wondering if there were any disadvantages of using the PAE mode version of the kernel, as that would allow me to use the whole of my memory instead of 2.9 GB.

At the moment I am using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

More than half of my computer work takes place on a word processor.I take notes, make outlines, and then write drafts of papers, chapters, presentations, etc. I regularly have to share these files with others who use operating systems other than Linux.I have just switched from OS X (after 5 years and half of using Mac) and I am still figuring out how to write my next dissertation chapter in Ubuntu.
There seems to be no consensus on what is or what are the best word processing softwares -- especially for academic writers -- in Ubuntu or Linux for that matter.I have read a number of posts on various forums and I find them either dated by several years or not dealing with the problems I am facing :
namely writing a serious, book-length academic work in the humanities and desiring to work with a user-friendly and fast word processor that would also be powerful enough to accomplish most or all academic tasks such as footnotes, style change, bibliography, accessibility, etc. There are people who suggest using LaTeX (LyX, Kile, etc.) but it seems to me that they're mostly based in the exact sciences and benefit from the math and science features that exist in LyX or another LaTeX editor. LaTeX is moreover not very accessible to those who do not know the LaTeX language or do not have an editor and work primarily with a word processor: meaning that when I share a LaTex document with my colleagues they have difficulty editing my work. My own personal experience with OpenOffice.org has not been very positive. It's pretty slow and has problems with multiple language input. Switching from Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel (both OS X softwares), OpenOffice.org Word Processor seems also not very user-friendly. It seems to follow the design of MS Word (or what MS Word used to be) and feels above all *cluttered.* I am however trying to like it as I understand there's probably no other word processor better than OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu. Am I correct to assume this? I also downloaded Kword which in terms of interface and egronomic design seems quite nice. It is also a bit faster -- although I don't know how powerful Kword is at the moment and whether it can accomplish all that my academic work requires from a word processor. I have also read somewhere that AbiWord is really not all that powerful. It is meant to be a fast but "lean" word processor which would do basic things quickly.
I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04. I had ubuntu 10.10 but I want to install 10.04 (32 bit) because 10.10 is slow. Problems with cd drive/cd caused installation to be incomplete so system cannot reboot at all.

One of this is Linux software.Installing programs from various distribution's package repositories leads to using out of date versions. From this point of view Windows users have an advantage. They always have latest releases.So, I want to ask a simple question: what disadvantages do I have when use "compile form source" methods of installing software. I have built a new server, now I am trying to restore my db from mysql. I have a backup that is out dated, I was hoping there was a way to copy the files over and have them work on the new installation. I can boot the server with the installation cd using recovery mode, I can get to the hdd and mount a smbfs share from the new server. I have tried to cp the files retaining the permissions and get a permission denied error, but if I copy without retaining the perms they copy just fine and do not work.
I have setup the new server with very close to the same version of all software. I have built a new instance of my service using all of the same users and passwords. I then backed up the new db and moved it over and attempted to copy the old db over. I did not copy it straight to the mysql folder as I did not share that folder out. Any other ideas to get this db recovered? What about getting my old server to run again just long enough to get a mysql dump?
Do you get any messages in the output of 'dmesg' related to wlan0?What specific kernel version do you have?What's the output of 'lsmod'?

Usually when this happens there is an additional item in the grub menu. The last two times this has happened I didn't get an additional menu item. What is the latest stable version? I am currently running:

After a large update of software I can nolonger open Squeeze. I get past the grub screen however before the gdm starts up the screen goes blank and stays that way. I have only one kernel showing on the grub screen.
I tried in Recovery Mode: Ctrl+Alt +F keys with effect and startx returns a blank screen, this is why I though to try loading another kernel to see if that helps. I'm using a Acer Laptop.
My question is: Is it possible while in Recovery Mode to load/install another kernel os that when I get back to the grub screen I have another kernel to try to boot into?

I have a question regarding application/process execution and it's the following:
Is it possible a user application (which will regularly be executed at user-space) to be re-written as a kernel-module to allow the entire execution to be under kernel-mode (i.e. no system calls should be needed)? I am not saying that this is the right thing to do; I am just asking if it's doable.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can run Ubuntu 10.04 just fine as long as I have my hardware drivers disabled, but when I enable my hardware drivers I get an error before the GDM login screen that says something to the effect of it being unable to load the NVIDIA KernelI'm then given the choice of booting into low-graphics mode, configuring xorg for this hardware, troubleshooting, dropping to console, or restarting X.Booting to low-graphics mode does nothing useful, just boots to low gfx mode.Configuring xorg for this hardware does nothing at all - same errors after trying every single option in the configuring xorg sectionTroubleshooting is equally useless to me - I can't copy and paste the very-long error reports, I'm not an xorg pro so editing the xorg conf doesn't help me, and when I tried following the option to export all my config and error logs, it said that it has exported it to $xorg_backup_file - but that's just a variable not a file.. after a reboot I can't find this anywhere.
I've googled this and the only useful info I've found is to run nvidia-xconfig as root, which I've done and it has zero effect.The only temporary solution is to disable the nvidia driver, which lets me boot normally using metacity at full resolution, but has no accelerated 3d or composite overlay so I'm unable to run compiz or have any nifty 3d.Details: Vid card: NVIDIA G96 (according to lspci) Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended] OS: Ubuntu 10.04

I did a fresh 64-bit install of 10.04 workstation a few weeks ago, and my grub seems to "double up" the listings of my kernel versions. I have removed the older versions hanging around on my system, but you can see in the list below, that I still get the listings more than once:
