Ubuntu :: Desktop Files Disappearing After Reboot?

Jun 8, 2011

I setup the chromium browser to come up in kiosk mode in the startup applications and after rebooting it does not come up in kiosk mode and the startup application entry is now gone.I have several machines and though they all have the exact same hardware and software, some lose the startup application entry on reboot and some do not.I was wondering if anyone might know what is going on and what might be the fix for this. I don't think it is a chromium problem, but I am positive.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Installation Wasn't Disappearing After Reboot?

Apr 16, 2010

So I have Suse 11.2 installed to dual boot on a Macbook Pro. Everything is finally working right after a lot of re-installs to get it too where the Suse installation wasn't disappearing after reboot, everything except for the wireless. Suse is seeing my connection and to my knowledge, I have all encryption and SSID entered correctly, but I cannot get a connection.

Ubuntu :: Conky Alignment - Desktop Icons Disappearing ?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm trying to work out with Conky on my Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

Conky is set to Top Left alignment, but it doesn't seem to be ending up there at all. After changing all of the different alignments, it doesn't seem to move around much at all.

(Desktop Screenshot Attached)

My other issue, which may have something to do with the way my Conky is set up, is that I have a couple of icons on the desktop, but they only show up when I put my mouse over them, and in the next couple of seconds they go away. It seems to be related to the refresh frequency of conky, which seems to be all of my issues right now.

Another note, this conky code is essentially pulled directly from the conky website.

Fedora :: Disappearing Files - Open A Folder And It's Empty ?

Dec 27, 2010

I've using RedHat/Fedora for years now, and every now and then I encounter the following situation :

I open a folder and it's empty. The folder was containing files and I'm 100% sure I didn't deleted them myself. Each time the folder is deep inside the hierarchy and is among other untouched folders. Sometimes it's a folder I never use, sometimes it's a folder I use almost everyday. The missing content is not large (a few regular files).

I'm currently running F13 but I've seen this behavior before on previous versions. This is kind of scary all my work is there and my backups are also done on a a linux backup server.

I'm puzzled, I cannot see any specificities to these folders, I had no crash or cold reboot, nothing I see can explain that. Could it be related to ext3?

Networking :: Unison/iwatch Sync - Files Disappearing From Server?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm trying to set up a synchronization with unison and iwatch to (more or less) instantly sync files upon change in a directory tree. iwatch calls unison like this:

Code:

unison /home/foo/vhosts/foo/my_vhost/bar.html ssh://server.tld//srv/www/vhostsfoo/bar.html -batch -terse -ui text -owner -group I would expect unison to sync all files between the two servers. However, that is not the case. Everything works fine as long as the files are only created/changed/whatever on the server running unison. If a file is created on the server that unison is synchronizing to, it gets deleted the next time unison is called.

For example:

Code:

on the host running unison:

$ cd /home/foo/vhosts/foo/my_vhost
$ touch foo.bar
-- sshing to remote host ---
$ ssh remote.com

[code]....

$ unison /home/foo/vhosts/foo/my_vhost/foo.bar ssh://remote.com//srv/www/vhosts/foo/foo.bar -batch -terse -ui text -owner -groupI expected that both files get synchronized - foo.bar from the unison server to remote.com and hello_world.html from remote.com to the server running unison. Instead, hello_world.html gets deleted.

I've been working a while on this and don't seem to be able to figure it out. Maybe it's only an argument to unison to rectify it but I couldn't find anything adequate in the manpage either.

Ubuntu Networking :: VNC To Remote Desktop After Reboot?

Since normal VNC isn't activated until after the login, what is the best way to go about remotely accessing this machine's desktop without having hands on it?

I've tried setting auto-login but then I run into the keyring not unlocked problem. Disabling the keyring or setting a blank password seems like a bad idea.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Icons Changed On Reboot?

Jul 31, 2011

I recently edited a .pptx presentation in LibreOffice, and it wouldn't close, until finally I had to force it to quit. The document recovered fine, and I saved it and all is good. I thought.

A couple of icons on the desktop acted weird, as in they wouldn't move, and I got a blank notification window when I tried to access them. So I rebooted.

Now, Launcher icons that had color are all in black and white, or most are, my desktop icons are b/w, and no longer have the icons that were associated with them originally. They seem to operate well, everything just changed.

I am running a Dual Core AMD Phenom II X2 565 64bit processor, 2G Ram, Natty, 2.6.38.10 generic kernel, Radeon 4290 graphics.

All of my windows (I know, bad word, but what else do you call them?) have changed to b/w themes as well.

Ubuntu :: Hanging Desktop Sometimes - Requires A SYSREQ Reboot To Restart It

May 11, 2011

Any time i try to start my computer from a cold state (off for 1+ hours), the first time i start it, it hangs and requires a SYSREQ reboot to restart it. When it hangs, all the window decorations disappear and the background vanishes. The main menu opens, but click on things does nothing. clicking shutdown only brings up the normal shutdown window with the text replaced with squares.

Thought it was my hdd (i/o errors and for some reason the HDD remounts r/o at this point), but e2fsck shows no issue.

Thought it may be an IRQ conflict, so i enabled MSI on all my PCI Devices.

Thought it was the 'green' aspect of my WD Drive, so i set the spindown time to 5 hours using hdparm config file. startup messages printed to screen confirm it is working.

Also, due to the numerous hard resets, the system is detecting a 'previous i/o error to the superblock'. Should recovering the SB from a backup be beneficial?

I really have no idea why this happens, and certainly does not happen with every reboot. If it helps, I am using Intel Ironlake Mobile.

Fedora :: Gnome Desktop Wallpaper Changes Don't Stay In Effect After Reboot

Jun 9, 2010

This is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.

Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.

I accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Spontaneous Reboot - KDE4 Desktop Comes Up With The Keyboard And Mouse Not Working

Jan 16, 2010

I have a new system with Asus M3A78-EM mobo, 4 GB RAM, AMD Phenom II quad-core 955 3.2 GHz CPU, on which I've installed the 64-bit version of openSUSE 11.2. It's a lightweight server as well as a desktop machine, and is on 24/7 (and on a UPS). The problem is that the system reboots itself spontaneously, on average a couple of times a day, at seemingly random times. After one of these reboots, an examination of the system log shows nothing at all suspicious logged in the minutes prior to the sudden reboot. Sometimes the system recovers after the reboot, but about half the time the KDE4 desktop comes up with the keyboard and mouse not working. The system log in that case shows that the USB subsystem is wedged, with the message "task khubd:38 blocked for more than 120 seconds", followed by a series of call traces. At that point, I can usually log in via SSH from another local machine and execute a shutdown/reboot, and the system usually recovers fully after that... until the next spontaneous reboot. The only thing unusual about my USB setup is that I have a Hauppauge HVR-1950 TV tuner plugged in, and the pvrusb2 driver installed on the system.

The mobo has an onboard ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphic controller, and I installed the proprietory ATI driver for it in the hopes of improving system stability. It didn't.

Due to the lack of syslog warnings before one of these reboot events, I was inclined to think the hardware was at fault, and my first thought was bad memory. However, fairly extensive testing with memtest86+ showed no errors. Of course, it could be other more obscure hardware problems, but it would be nice to be a little more certain before I resort to replacing the motherboard or the whole system.

Other info... booting in failsafe mode doesn't seem to cure the problem. Setting acpi=off in the boot menu doesn't seem to help either. There are some suspicious things in the boot log, though, such as:

My system does not have ECC memory, so it is indeed properly disabled in my BIOS. Again, I see discussions of this bug(?) on the net, but little indication of whether it is anything serious.

At this point, I'm running out of ideas... I'm still not sure whether the hardware or openSUSE 11.2 are at fault, and I don't want to give up on either prematurely.

Debian :: Spontaneous Reboot - Log Files Overwhelming?

Jun 25, 2011

A short while ago and for no apparent reason, my system rebooted. I was doing a lot of things at one time scanning, Photoshop in Wine, Open Office, ftping etc. I can't remember ever having this happen. When I logged in again, the window manager wasn't working quite right. That made me think Compiz might be the culprit. Logging out and in again set things right.

I started looking in log files to see what happened but was quickly overwhelmed. Are there any likely key words I could search for to track down the cause? And in which files?
