Red Hat / Fedora :: Xorg.conf Causing On Scientific 5.5?
Apr 5, 2011I am new to RHEL. I am using a Thinkpad W510 and SL 5.5. I am trying to get everything working smoothly on my system.I am having issues with the gpu drivers and the touchpad, both of which seem to be traced back to xorg.conf.I can set the proper resolution using nvidia-settings, but it resets to 800x600 on restart no matter what I do. I have used the gui to save, I have tried nvidia-xconfig, and I have tried to just editing the xorg myself, but it always goes back.I am having even worse problems with the trackpad. I downloaded and installed the synaptics package, but nothing I do changes the trackpad settings. Mouse properties has no trackpad info in it.

Dec 31, 2009I'm having a few problems with XOrg freezing while playing World of Goo (not the worlds most intense game for graphics, but seemingly too much for my rig). I initially posted on the developer's forums, but they said a full X freeze wouldn't be the game. Testing with BZFlag got me a full Xorg freeze even quicker than with WoG. Later I even tried glxgears to see how well it ran and even that froze the system! My only way of recovering is SysReq-REISUB.
Specs/system details:
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
2GB RAM
Radeon X1950XTX using the open source drivers
openSUSE 11.2 (64-bit - patched up to date and without an xorg.conf)

So, is there a fix for the huge instability with 3D graphics, or am I stuck between a rock and a hard place with the options of outdated official drivers that may not work with the latest kernels (and would need manually rebuilding even if they did) or flakey open drivers that are guaranteed to freeze at some point, it is just a matter of when?

Mar 28, 2011Alright setting up a friends netbook, display has been a little iffy (slow. glxgears is giving like 100fps). Couple issues: xorg.conf doesn't exist (i know thats typically not an issue) and "sudo xorg -configure" and "sudo xorg --configure" both return "xorg command not found."
glxinfo say that its using Mesa for the software rasterizer and that the driver is from mesa. lspci says the VGA controller is from Intel. I'm thinking xorg is defaulting to vesa for drivers, but I need to know how to change that to the open source intel driver

Jan 5, 2010my laptop is running Slackware64 13.0. Today I tried to update to X.org 7.5 (version 1.7.1) from version 1.6.3 shipped with Slackware. I downloaded the relevant source tarballs from www.x.org and compiled them with no errors. The compiled packages are:

My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.
It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

Hardware :: Xorg.conf Is Replaced With A Default Xorg.conf After Reboot ?
Apr 9, 2010I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.
But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.
What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.
I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

May 3, 2010I'm running the ubuntu based Green OS and cant get my video card properly configured. i've already gone through the forums to figure out what i need to do to get my ATI card working but my system wont let me access the xorg.conf file. i can see it using the the GOS file editor but it wont let me save the modifications. when i attempt to edit from a terminal window with su privelages it tells me that /etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist. i've even tried booting into recovery mode and using the root instead of the sudo command. nothing i've tried will let me open the file.

Jun 24, 2010i recently switched from windows vista to ubuntu 10.04, so i am a complete noob at this stuff... i enabled the ufw a few days ago and ever since then my Internet connection has been pretty spotty. i connect to the wireless network fine, and there is nothing wrong with the actual Internet connection (other computers in the house are using it fine) it is very frustrating and i was wondering if there is a way to stop this, do i need to forward some ports, or do i really even need the firewall at all... i don't really do many things that would allow me to get hacked in the first place..

Oct 19, 2010I had this problem in 10.04 and hoped it would go away in 10.10, but it did not. My computer crashes on shutdown. When the system is shutting down, the screen goes black (sometimes with a bunch of grey lines), and just hangs. I have waited for a long time but nothing happens. I have to shut it down manually, with file losses as a result. How should I go about fixing this? I have looked a bit in /var/log but do not know where to look for. Where can I find what is causing this?

Jan 26, 2010Is anyone else having trouble with frequent kernel panics whenever the Transmission bittorrent client is running? I get them after about 1-2 minutes of having transmission running, and need to do a hard reset. I didn't restart transmission this last time and it has been almost 10 minutes with no problems. I've been having problems left and right with KPs since around 8.04 but previously they were infrequent enough that it was still more convenient than using windows...Every 2 minutes is ridiculous though, if I can't fix it I'm going to need to get another torrent client!

May 7, 2010I recently upgraded to 10.04 and now netbeans is not working. It worked fine the first restart after i upgraded so i thought all was good. This morning i ran it and it said something about not being able to load some modules. Since then, i've tried uninstalling it, re-installing it, and numerous restarts, all to no avail. I'm gonna try downloading the package from their website and running it from a separate install and see if that helps, but after that, I'm out of ideas.
When i run it either from the terminal or by clicking on it, it shows the loading screen, then the loading screen dissapears, then nothing else happens. In the terminal, it waits about ten seconds after the screen dissapears and the program seems to exit, since the terminal begins accepting commands once again.

Nov 11, 2010I'm running firefox 3.6.12 with the following add ons installed: Windows Media Player 10, Div X web player 1.4.0.233 and Flash 10.1 r102. Ubuntu is 32 bit as is the Flash plugin. Quicktime, VLC and iTunes application detector are installed but disabled. I get recurrent episodes whilst using firefox where the entire screen goes grey/black and after a minute or so the login screen appears and I have to enter my password get back to the desktop. I suspect that this is flash related as it normally occurs after watching a few minutes of video. Disabling flash reduces the frequency of the problem but does not eliminate it.

Dec 29, 2010Running a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 under VMWare Player on a Thinkpad with Win7. Have previously used Perl/TK for GUI apps to run under both Windows & Linux. Latest Activestate Perl (Windows) does not support Perl/Tk, recommends Tkx, so I wanted to see if Tkx would work under Ubuntu. Tried to install Tkx using cpan, got obscure failure indicating dependency problem. Found a recommendation to apt-get install tcl8.5-dev, and then cpan installed Tkx.
Note, perl 5.10.1 is installed in Maverick by default. apt-get upgrade says I have the latest perl, Tcl and TK. I installed Tkx version 1.09 (using cpan). Couldn't find any info on what perl / Tkx versions are compatible. Now Tkx is installed, but any attempt to run a script that uses Tkx causes a segmentation fault. apt-get installed pmtools to investigate. Even examining Tkx with pmtools can cause a seg fault, for example:
$ pmvers Tkx
Segmentation fault
Is Tkx known to work (or not work) under Ubuntu,version 10.10 or other versions? Any suggestions about what to try next?It's hard to find info about Perl Tkx because so many people put "Can u help, tkx in advance" or similar in postings about anything under the sun. I've read a lot of them.

Mar 20, 2011i've noticed lately that when scrolling, the video "tears" and moves along with my scrolling on sites such as videos, when it should be fixed in position. note that it doesn't actually move perfectly and is flickery/cropped while scrolling. i have all the latest updates (10.10) and notice it in both chromium and firefox, so it's either the window manager or ati driver.

OpenSUSE Install :: Precedence Of Xorg.conf Over Xorg.conf.d?
Jan 26, 2011I've read the how-tos (thank you oldcpu!) and wikis about how xorg.conf take precedence over the section configuration files in etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, if it exist. I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:

My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?
