View 2 Replieshi, use have ubuntu 10 as client on a windows7 comp. have used the "shared folder" options of virtualbox to share my external harddrive, the command:
sudo mount.vboxsf J_DRIVE /mnt/J_DRIVE
works. but when i go to make a launcher:
sudo nano /usr/local/bin/extlauncher
command: sudo mount.vboxsf J_DRIVE /mnt/J_DRIVE
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/extlauncher
everything goes fine, but upon launching my launcher ubuntu doesnt mount my external harddrive.
adding
J_DRIVE /mnt/J_DRIVE vboxsf rw,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dev 0 0
to fstab also works fine.
do i need to create a launcher differently when i want it to contain a sudo command?
I am running Fedora on a VirtualBox. Sometimes to allow for performing some real hardware testing, I need to run my development environment on a physical machine. So I need the hard disk of the virtual machine (the .vdi file) to be interchangeably working on both the virtual machine itself and my physical PC by booting a bootable image, mounting the vdi file, and then chrooting to it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running VirtualBox on a Windows XP host. Red Hat Linux 5.2 GUI is running inside VirtualBox. I want to use my USB pen drive inside Red Hat - it is visible from Windows XP but not from Red Hat.
Can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how I should fix it? I am new to using Linux.
Moved to virtualization forum: [URL].. I just upgraded my Ubuntu VirtualBox guest to Lucid. My host machine shares two folders with the guest. I have them listed in my /etc/fstab so they're automatically mounted:
share /mnt/share vboxsf defaults 0 0 For some reason, it looks like Ubuntu attempts to mount these shared folders twice. The first time, the mount doesn't succeed, but the second time, it does, so by the time I actually log in, the shares work properly.
Karmic would just print an error message at boot, but now Lucid makes me press a key to continue booting when the mount fails. Ideally, I'd like to figure out how to make the first mount attempt work properly. But if that's complicated, just disabling Lucid's prompt would make me happy.
I on a dell latitude c500/c600 and running 9.10 and have a maxtor 160 gb external hd that wont mount right. it shows up in / but when i click on it i get the error message:unable to mount location can't mount file. could someone give a suggestion to get this to work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use VirtualBox at work, where windows7 is host and ubuntu 10.04 is guest operating system.
I want to access my windows drives, folders in ubuntu, when i did sudo blkid or mount or fdisk -l, i cannot see all the drives on my machine.
So i finally did with shared folders concept. Now i can't mount them wherever i want, but when i say automount in the virtualbox settings->sharedfolder, then it auto mounts in /media/E-drive??
But to see, copy, edit or access those media files, i need to be sudo?? With normal user i can't use those /media files.
Suggest a good method of sharing files from windows7 to ubuntu in virtualbox
I am running ubuntu using VirtualBox on a Macbook Pro. I wanted to share my documents folder on the Mac in the virtual machine. I had no issues creating/mounting the share folder on ubuntu. However the file permissions for the shared folder are owned by root.
Code:
drwx------ 1 root root 1088 2010-02-04 10:18 Mac_Share/
I used the following command to mount the folder:
Code:
sudo mount -t vboxsf Share_Documents ~/Mac_Share/
I checked that the folder is mounted I can see what is there using
Code:
sudo ls Mac_Share/
How do I make the folder accessible to the user? Is there another -option needed to do this in the mount command?
Does anyone know where I can find the complete VirtualBox .deb file for Lucid? That is the one that doesn't need an Internet connection to install VirtualBox.
I downloaded the .deb available from virtualbox.org but, when I copied it to a desktop I have without Internet connection I can't install it because it looks for a connection to the repositories.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu server with Apache 2, PHP, and various DBMSs running in VirtualBox on my Mac host for my web development work. To easily create/edit the files I'm working on, I mounted a directory from my Mac host via the VirtualBox shared directory feature to /var/www/. Every file I create on my Mac host has the following permissions on the on the Server: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6 2011-07-30 01:27 test. The problem is that most PHPscripts/frameworks/etc.need write access to some files. It is extremely annoying to have to chmod every new file/directory that needs write access. Is there a way to set the correct permissions for the files/directories automatically?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm uncertain if this is the correct forum to ask this question. Please redirect me to the correct forum if necessary. I am attempting to install MS Windows 7 as a guest in VirtualBox inside Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. on a ZaReason Strata 3660 with 4GB of RAM and adequate memory. The machine is correctly partitioned for this event. I am using the Ubuntu Walk Through as a guide: [URl].. All was going fine until VirtualBox asked for the .iso image from the MS cd 'UDF Volume'. There appears to be no .iso file in the UDF Volume.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have virtualbox installed, and arch set up as the guest OS now i have made my home folder shared folder with the guest OS but at first my arch couldnt read my home folder.i realized the permission setting for the home folder is set as rwx to myself, and nothing to everyone else.so i chmod -R 755 to everything and that seemed to have solved the problem now i want to make my home folder readonly to my guest OS. do i just do chmod -R 744 to my home folder? i already messed up something when i set 644 to everything in my home folder, as my dropbox stopped working so im afraid of something like that happening to me again, otherwise i d love to experiment
another question is, are .so files supposed to be executable? I googled it, and it seems they dont have to be.But my dropbox stopped working after the .so files in /home/myhomefolder/.dropbox got assigned 644 D:
For some reason, when I click on the Slackbuild link for virtualbox-kernel (3.1.6) for virtualbox-kernel-3.1.6.tar.xz , it downloads as virtualbox-kernel-3.1.6.tar.tar. The file is misnamed. If it is renamed virtualbox-kernel-3.1.6.tar.xz , the SlackBuild works just fine.

I'm trying to mount a .img file with a HFS+ partiton on it. I can't seem to get it working. I don't want to overwrite a whole partition. Just mount the filesystem to /media/directory.
sudo mount -t hfs -o loop /path/file.img /media/directory/ gives me wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
Output: dmesg | tail

I've got an image file that I made with DDrescue.I installed Sleuth Kit and when I type: mmls /mnt/drive/file .it says "cannot determine partition type".I imaged a different drive and tried to use the same command line and got the same results.I'm not familiar with working with image files too much,.I would like to mount the NTFS partition within the image file.
