General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

General :: Re-mapping Non-standard Keys To Modifier Keys?

Apr 7, 2011

I'm running Debian (Squeeze) and I have a toshiba portege m700. It has five buttons on the front just under the screen, which are the only ones accessible when you flip the screen over into tablet mode. One of them is for rotating the screen, and another is for switching to external display. I want to remap the remaining three to control, alt and super so that I can use shortcuts with the stylusThe problem is, when I used showkey to find out the key codes, I found out that each button generates more than one key code:Button 1:

key 126 press >> super_r, although this is distinct from the actual super key (125)
key 7 press >> 6
key 7 release
key 126 release

Ubuntu :: Never Get Keys From Keyserver?

Feb 5, 2010

I try to import a key from a keyserver when I add a repository to software sources, it just tries forever and times out. For instance, following the instructions here: [URL]... to add the key "CE49EC21" for the ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable. Whether I do it in the terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CE49EC21 or by clicking the link on their page, I get nowhere. I've had this problem with other keys from keyserver.ubuntu.com too.

It suddenly occurred to me today that maybe my router is the problem. It has a draconian firewall built in. (For instance, it won't allow incoming bittorrent traffic without me explicitly opening ports.) So maybe, since I'm trying to receive a key, it's preventing the key from coming in? Does anyone know why I'm having this problem getting keys?

Ubuntu :: Rsync - Ssh - Pgp Keys ?

May 15, 2010

I setup keyed ssh between two of my computers on my lan. It was working great. I used Ubuntu's Passwords and Encryption Keys tool to generate the key.

Yesterday I tried rsync'ing a grip of files to the ssh server and couldn't get it to work, I figured I was just messing the rsync command up. Today I just tried to log in using ssh and it just hangs there after I type the ssh command.

With verbosity on it stops at checking the blacklist file. Does this mean it decided my key is one of the badly generated ones? Why would it decide this now I thought it was supposed to catch that when generating the key.

Also I just checked that file it's trying to check doesn't even exist. Should it?

Ubuntu :: Ssh Not Accepting Keys?

I posted this in Networks but have had little luck in that forum lately...I haven't been able to connect via ssh to my media server at home. It's running Karmic (non-server version) and has sshd installed. I generated a rsa and dsa key pair and added them to the server in .ssh/authorized_keys and .ssh/authorized_keys2 by use ofcat key >> .ssh/authorized_keys(2)Changed sshd_config to only accept Keys and kept port 22, since I will port forward through router and make firewall exception down the line.I made an account on the server with the same name as my laptop. Here's output from ssh -v daniel@

Ubuntu :: How To Map Multimedia Keys In KDE

Jul 7, 2011

So I have a very simple problem, or rather I thought it was going to be simple. I have a keyboard with some multimedia buttons. They are the standard ones, (Home, Browser, New Document, etc.) but at the moment they don't do anything. I would like to set it up so that Home executes 'dolphin ~', Browser opens Firefox, New Document opens Libre Office.

This was all very straight-forward in GNOME but I can't figure out how to in KDE (I am a relative newcomer to KDE). I went to System Settings->Shortcuts and Gestures and played around for awhile but to no avail . I've also tried DuckDuckGo-ing.

Ubuntu :: Keys Stay On In Searchandrescue

Jan 4, 2010

So lately I've been playing searchandrescue and I think it's great, like a simpler version of Simcopter. But for some reason the key will stay on until I close the game, and occasionally after I close it. For example, if I hit m to check my map while the engine is revving up, it will stay on, and when I hit a button that requires typing, it will just be a bunch of m's. Or sometimes if I hit an arrow key it will stay on, then I'll exit the game and move up to the menu and the key will still be going, but when I hit the key again after the game is closed it will stop. Any ideas on this one? Once I figure out the command to start searchandrescue in the terminal I'll post the output when the bug occurs.

Ubuntu Security :: SSH Login Is Using RSA Keys?

Feb 6, 2010

I'm having trouble logging in with SSH using RSA keys.

client: Karmic
server: FreeNAS (FreeBSD) ip:

I generated RSA keys on Karmic, added the id_rsa.pub to the authorized_keys file on FreeNAS, then removed the id_rsa.pub from Karmic (this is a poorly documented but necessary step I learned). My Karmic username is shawn, FreeNAS username is shawnboy.from Karmic it prompts me for my RSA key passphrase which it should do, but after I enter it, it fails and moves on to prompt me for my password. I know this isn't a FreeNAS forum, but this works perfectly using Putty SSH with RSA keys on Windows XP, so I figure it's more appropriate to ask here than in FreeNAS forums.

Ubuntu :: How To Remap And Disable Keys

Feb 26, 2010

Just installed the Ubuntu for the first time and I have a problem. My keyboard's "a" key is faulty, it's acting like it's stuck, that is it is constantly typing aaaas so I had to disable it and reassign the letter "a" to another key. I did this quite easily in Windows with a program called KeyTweak...

Now that I started working in Ubuntu, the damn thing started acting just as it did under windows and it's constantly typing a all over the place, so I can't get any work done. How do I disable the key "a" and reassign "a" to another key(like q for instance)? Are there any programs for key remapping in Ubuntu or I'll have to do it manually? If so, how?

Ubuntu :: Swapping Keys Using Xmodmap?

I am using an Apple Keyboard (DK-layout) on my PC running Ubuntu 10.4. The problem: My key used to type <, > and is swapped with the key used to type and If I connect a standard PC-keyboard with DK-layout using USB, it works just fine. The problem exists both in the console and X. I solved the problem in the console by installing the console-keymaps package, made a copy of dk-latin1.kmap.gz and swapping keycode 86 with keycode 41 and loading the new keymap with the loadkeys command. I only need to figure out how to load the new keymap at boot time.

However, in X, I want to do exactly the same. I suppose I have to use Xmodmap. I simply can't figure out how to do it.

Ubuntu :: Modifier Keys Do Not Work Through VNC

Aug 30, 2010

I've been an ubuntu user for a few years now, I just never joined the forums since I never really had problems with my installations. Today, however, is completely different. I recently converted my server from windows 2k3 to ubuntu server 10.04, and have been setting ssh and VNC so that I can access it remotely. Both x11vnc and ssh are installed and working fine, as I can connect to the server from my Macbook, but here is where it gets weird. When in VNC, none of the modifier keys work(shift, ctrl, alt, super) and caps lock only works half the time. (I have to press it twice to turn it on and twice to turn it off).

Server Specs:
Dell Poweredge 2500
1x Intel Pentium III 1Ghz (coppermine)

Ubuntu Security :: Ssh Keys Can't Be Found

Sep 29, 2010

Scenario 1. I am doing this from /home/deploy directory I am trying to set up ssh with github for capistrano deployment. this has been an absolute nightmare. when I do ssh git@github.com as the deploy account I get Permission denied (publickey). so may be the key is not being found, so If I do a ssh-add /home/deploy/.ssh/id_rsa Could not open a connection to your authentication agent. (i did verify that the ssh-agent was running) If I do exec ssh-agent bash and then repeat the ssh-add then the key does get added and I can ssh into github. Now I exit from the ssh connection to my server and ssh back in and I can't ssh into github anymore! Scenario 2 if I login to my remote server and then cd into my .ssh directory and ssh into github then it all works fine I guess there is a problem with locating the key and for some reason the agent isn't funcitoning correctly.

Ubuntu :: SSH Without Password Not Working With Keys

Dec 21, 2010

I have two machines at home. I am trying to setup the ssh server on the server machine so I can connect from the client machine with no password (keys authentication).Well, that shouldn't have been too hard, but the thing is the server user account I want to be able to connect to with keys auth has no password (that is actually the reason I want to setup keys auth). I have done everything in this guide (URL...), both alternatives, but with no success, because at some time I have to ssh the server to the user account that has no password (either with scp or ssh-copy-id) and it fails.

My question is: since I have root access on the server machine, can't I copy manually the public key from the client to the server? (doing manually what ssh-copy-id actually does).Or, maybe there is another way, to change the password on the passwordless account. I have tried with # su <acct>, then passwd, but it doesn't work (asks me for the old password). I was thinking about editing /etc/shadow manually, and inserting the hash in the password field for that account (it currently has an ! ). Would that work?
