Ubuntu :: Can't Type The Backslash Character (nor The Pipe)

Dec 9, 2010

I'm a UK based user and using a standard UK keyboard (Coleman based layout I think) although I have a backslash (to the left of the "Z", I can't type the character in any application. This is very frustrating when typing FQDNs amongst other things. How can I enable the backslash key for use with UK keyboard layouts. BTW I have tried all of the UK keyboards suggested in the keyboard layout dialogue

Fedora :: Incorrect Keyboard Layout ( No Pipe Character )?

Feb 11, 2010

I'm new to linux, been using fedora 12 for about a week. I just noticed a problem with my keyboard layout. When i press the key with the backslash and pipe character, i get < for backslash and > for the pipe character. I have tried the following to fix the problem:

1.$ gnome-keyboard-properties then selected the proper keyboard model (Asus Laptop) tried adding different keyboard layouts and setting them as default nothing i did there made any difference.I am currently using USA, i have tried Canada English, USA international, and more I noticed that even when i change it to something like Afganistan, there is no noticable different when i type in the test area. I notice that there are keyboard layouts that have < and > where the backslash and pipe character should be, but the picture for USA shows the pipe and backslash where they should be.

Programming :: DB2 VARCHAR Type Usage With NULL Character?

Mar 7, 2011

I have a vector of bytes that I need to store in a DB2 database and was wanting to do it with a column declared as VARCHAR () FOR BIT DATA. I can do this with no problem except when a byte representing the NULL character occurs in the vector. Anytime this occurs, the rest of the bytes are truncated. I know this is the proper behavior for if this were a string, but I was under the impression that if the column is declared as I previously mentioned, that this would support any variable length binary data including the NULL character.

I've found repeated references to people dealing with DB2 tables where the data in VARCHAR columns contained leading and embedded NULLS, so I know this is possible. Can anyone provide me with the proper INSERT statement in order to get this to work? This is the current BindParameters call I'm making for the VARCHAR () FOR BIT DATA column that's truncating after the NULL character occurs.

Code:

SQLBindParameter(handleStmt, 3, SQL_PARAM_INPUT, SQL_C_CHAR,
SQL_VARCHAR, (SQLUINTEGER)(30000), 0, data2, 30000,
&sqlNts);

Ubuntu :: Cannot Delete File With Backslash In Filename

Feb 6, 2011

Ubuntu 10.04 Guest in VirtualBox

I'm trying to delete a file called

Code:
springlobby_config.h

I've tried:

Code:
rm -i *

which gives me:

Code:
rm: cannot remove `springlobby_config\.h': No such file or directory

Tried to rename it:

Code:
mv * abc

which gives me:

Code:
mv: cannot stat `springlobby_config\.h': No such file or directory

I don't think it's a permissions issue because usually the terminal would say permission denied, but perhaps I'm wrong.

General :: Backslash Preceding A Shell Command

Mar 21, 2011

Reading a BASH script, I saw a find command preceded with a backslash. It was similar to this:

Code:
`find . -type f -name '*.xml' -print > xmlfilelist`

It's impossible to find documentation about this in man pages or on the internet, since 'backslash' are always evoked along with special characters. I also noticed that even though the command was surrounded with backquotes, the result was not affected to any variable. Maybe the backslash's presence is related with this?

Programming :: Sed Bash Command - Not Print Backslash In Perl

Jul 11, 2010

This pretend to be a script for rename a lot of files automatically. So I put the list of files in an array named @lista. But, as you can see, at the end of the command I use a sed filter to print out a backslash for those files that have spaces in their names, so the path for those files could be rightly interpreted.

But there's no way I could print a backslash. It works well when I use the Perl's sed substitution s///, but I need every path in the array to be fixed.

I'd like to add that the bash command works perfectly well alone. I mean outside the Perl script.

This is de command line with the sed filter:

Code:

And this is what it brings:

Ubuntu :: Frozen Panel - Messing Around With The Alternate Character Panel App And Made A Custom Character Set

Jun 12, 2011

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.

When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Number Keys On The Right Side - Including Backslash - Plus - Minus Stopped Working And Mouse

Mar 23, 2011

1) Keyboard number keys on the right side, including backslash, plus, minus, etc. stopped working. The rest of the keyboard seems okay. It's not just this keyboard, either, because I plugged in my other keyboard and it has the same problem.

2) My mouse seems to have an intermittent problem in which it stops working for a few seconds or a minute. I can move it around the screen but I'm not able to click on anything. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it returns to normal. If I logout using the keyboard commands and log in again, it seems okay, at least until the next occurrence.

I'm running 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. I installed a kernel update a couple of weeks ago (2.6.32-29) but I've gone back to -28 in the hope that it would solve the problem. It has not. Is there a software package I need to reinstall or some other way to revert keyboard and mouse settings to defaults?

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive

I did have to change this setting at the graphical login initally, whether from choosing this setting by mistake or the installer choosing it automatically when I chose English UK for the language.
