Mar 1, 2011I'm using an 'if' statement to check whether one of positional arguments is a word or a construction like "x-y", but something doesn't seem right.
Here is the relevant part of the code:

And for the input like this:

but shouldn't the $grepRange variable be blank in this case?

General :: Sed To Replace First And Second Instance?
Jul 17, 2011I might just be crazy or particularly dumb today but what I'm trying to do is have sed replace the first and second instance of a character on a line but not after that.
Basically it is a csv file with a date formatted as dd/mm/yyyy and I need to completely remove the slashes. No problem using:

sed 's////g' < file > outputfile
The only problem is that one of the columns after this may also contain these slashes and shouldn't be removed.
I must have read every single sed page on the net today to find a way to do it to no avail! Is it as simple as :

sed 's////1' < file > outputfile
And then run the same on the output file again? these two slashes will always be the first and second slashes in the file.

if [[ ${array[${last}]} =~ "screenpc.PRODUCTION.*" ]]
which WORKED as expected in bash 4.0.33 and now fails in 4.1.2
Instrumented the script to print the value of the left-hand side and it is exactly what is expected.
As noted above, this has been working fine until we installed Fedora 13 (kernel 2.6.33), and now it fails.
Tried setting shell 'extglob' to On with same results.
Did something change? Are there other shell/bash options that need to be set?this has the whole installation stopped!

Jul 28, 2011I have a large number of log files, on a linux box, I need to cleanse sensitive data from before sending to a third party. I have used the below script on previous occasions to perform this task, and it has worked brilliantly (script was built with some help from here :-)

However, now one of our departments has sent me a CLIENT_FILE.txt with 425000+ variables! I think I may have hit some internal limit. I have tried splitting the client file into 4 with around 100000 variables in each, this still doesn't work. I'm loathe to keep splitting though as I have 20 directories with up to 190 files in each directory to run through. The more client files I make, the more passes I have to do.

The variables are clean and available in my script. No prob. $old is an IP-address of a server, $new as well. replacement-file is an xml-file (the ip-address to be changed is within an xml-tag). It should be trivial, but it isn't. I spent the last 3 hours reading about the problem, trying several different 'solutions' or workarounds. It should work, the '"' should take care that the variables get expanded, but whatever I try the old server IP isn't replaced.

Feb 15, 2010I have KDE 4.4 and Firefox 3.6. Whenever I click a link from a plasmoid widget, it tries to open Konqueror and another instance of Firefox. The page actually loads in the opened Firefox window, but the task bar shows an instance of Konqueror and another instance of Firefox, that keeps loading for a while then close. See image below:
I currently have setup the browser default application as "firefox". If I set this option to use the default application, it opens in Konqueror and I don't see additional windows in the task bar. If I change the option to "firefox %u", then it exhibit the same issue, but the process is much faster, so the loading windows don't stay for long in the task bar. Additionally, it opens the link on a new Firefox window and opens the page twice. Although Konqueror is not loaded, the bouncing icon next to the mouse pointer shows up and stay for a while.

May 10, 2010I'm trying to write a bash script and I'm having trouble with it.I have a list of DNS entires from a file called zoneExport.txt.Than I want to parse a log file to see if that DNS entry has been queried for. So I'm running a grep command and trying to save it into a variable. What I'm looking for is a variable ($varGrepQ) that has the number of matches for the grep query. I will then run this through an if statement and do some things from there..
But my problem right now is with this grep query. It keeps outputting '0' even when I know there are records in that file and when I run the same query on the command line I get the actual count. My thought is that the $record variable is not passing right.

For example, after reading in a data file and making it into an array, I have:echo "To check the data, enter the first element number, last element number and step size as x y z:"read x y z.It then goes on to start a loop, but what I would like now (before the loop) is a check to see if three variables have been entered, before the rest of the script continues.
I've tried specifying the variables as $1, $2 and $3, but if I echo $#, the value comes out as zero, so it's obviously not working.
