Just ran update, and it automatically installed an acroread package (9.4.2 60.5Mb). Thing is I removed acroread in favour of foxit a while back.Why would I receive updates for programs I no longer have installed?

After trying a `blind' sudo apt-get install acroread which was unsuccessful I tried installing using the synaptic package manager, and couldn't find it in there either.
According to the software sources info I have both Universe and Multiverse switched on. I'm fairly sure one of my attempted permutations of `acro', `reader' and `acrobat' etc should have hit upon something so I assume there must be something more fundamental wrong!
Am using a newly installed Lucid Lynx 10.04
When i try installing anything i get errors, for example when i try to install somthing from ubuntu software center i get this.

i have to use lh command. I have installed all updates for ubuntu, live-build (the package for lh) and its updates. So my system is fully updated.When i hit "lh" command i get the following message: The program 'lh' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install live-build
When i do type: "sudo apt-get install live-build" i get:

live-build is already the newest version.

I see some drastic changes on the fonts' of several websites I visit regular. Everything is ok when I try to remove the package msttcorefonts. The question is, why does this package install by itself? I remember that I've uninstalled it several times!

To back up the virtual machine, the 9Gb file needs to be split in half so that they can burn it to DVD Using lxsplit is pretty simple for me, but these people are completely terrified of a terminal. Is there a simple gui front end for lxsplit so that I can just put an icon on the desktop for them? I've looked around with no success.
Or is there a DVD burning package that splits them automatically? Brasero is on there but it doesn't seem to have that capability. This would actually be the best option, as they wouldn't have to bother with a manual split at all.

I managed to get recognized my Trendnet TEW-424UB wireless USB adaptor with ndiswrapper. Now I have the configuration problem. When I try to do the configuration in Yast, in network devices -> network settings and I save I get a message that I must install the "iw" package. Because the computer is quite far from wired networks I can't get it on Internet to download the package automatically. So, I want to ask if it's possible to install this package off-line because I can't find it by searching on OpenSUSE website.
On this computer I use OpenSUSE 11.2 32-bit with KDE. I put some commands if someone wants to know how I manage to get this USB WiFi adaptor to work (with the Windows XP driver sis163u verison 5.1.1039.1050):

Is there a package in YUM now that automatically updates amavisd-new to version 2.6.4??? My VM comes stock with version 2.5.4 and i absolutely CANNOT update it to 2.6.4 due to incompatibility issues in Maia Mailguard. When I do the package upgrade I don't understand but i specifically do NOT choose amavisd-new to be updated and everytime I check to see my latest version it is at version 2.6.4 I don't get it am I missing something? What can be causing my package to always get upgraded to the new version when I am not upgrading it.

I am going to setup a new Ubuntu 10.04 using RAID 1 soon. Installation will be via the alternate CD. Older distributions required manually installing Grub to the second drive, to boot if the first drive fails. I found different statements about how this is handled since 9.10.e.g.

I just removed the gnome from the ubuntu 9.10.then i reninstall the xfce4.i am invoking the xfce4 by typing#startxi want to start the xfce4 as usual like the gnome did automatically by asking login window.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh reinstall of opensuse 11.2 kde. After I installed it I updated the computer. However, when I returned to my computer after the update, I found the window borders to be missing and that I couldn't do anything with the desktop. I restarted, and lo and behold! I had KDE 4.4! Except I didn't want to install it. I perfectly like kde 4.3, and would probably prefer to move back to it until kde 4.4 becomes stable. Why did this happen? Had opensuse moved on to kde 4.4 already? Is there a way to get KDE 4.3 without reinstalling?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running the xfce desktop on a new ubuntu 9.10 installation.I used the Synaptics Package Manager to install several applications, including R, the statistics programming language. After the installation, it took me quite a while to find where the package manager put the executable, but I found it.The problem is, I can't figure out how to get it to execute. I tried double clicking on it and I tried right clicking on it and selecting "Execute" from the menu that pops up.
How do I get an executable to execute? Also, is there an easy way to track down where the executables get put after I use the Synaptics Package Manager?It would be handy if I could put links to them in some central location.
I can open other PDF files (including the instruction files for form 1040), but I cannot open the form 1040 PDF with acroread. I can open the same file with evince, but I really need to do this with acroread.

How can I get this package removed? I was able to get a different management tool installed to configure my RAID so I don't need this one. My system appears to be working, but everytime I use apt-get to install something else, it shows the hptraidconf package as failed.

In okular when you try to load more than one pdf, the newer one pushes out the first one.
First of all I must admit that I am quite new with linux, and maybe the problem I am experiencing is something trivial. Nevertheless I don't have any idea about how to handle it. When I try to print a file with Okular or with Acroread what happens is that the applications crashes and I have to terminate it, and the file is not printed.

Installed ubuntu 10.10 on my dell D600. Install went fine, but after updates, the initial startup sound disappeared. Also had a bit of an issue getting the wireless card to work, eventually found the answer in the debian wiki and got the legacy installer for the b4X broadcomn chipset. Since then, everytime i install something, the system tells me the package was not installed correctly, but it does appear to install, except the stellarium.
