Ubuntu :: Attempting To Resume Another User's Screen

Oct 5, 2010

I am attempting to resume another user's screen (-r) and execute a command in it (-X) While I can resume (-r), if I combine that with executing a command (-X), errors arise. Instead of trying to explain my problems, see the below outputs.

All screens are ran as one user ("minecraft") minecraft has his .screenrc file setup to enable multiuser mode, and to allow access from kjohnson

Code:
minecraft@mc1:~$ screen -list
There are screens on:
18810.threatgreater (10/05/2010 02:23:31 PM) (Multi, detached)
1185.baron (10/05/2010 07:29:26 AM) (Multi, detached)

General :: No Prompt For Root Password After Attempting To Enter Single User Mode?

Jul 13, 2011

I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??

When one of the users hibernates (to disk) and the other resumes with a change user click the system sometimes ! does not know what to do. It askes for the password but both passwords (both users) are rejected, however the last time the system resumed with 2 active mousearrows and I think both users were activated. Unable to use the mouseclick because both arrows were active. Is this a known 11.3 unstable bug or is it in my system?

When I close my laptop lid (it goes into suspend mode). When I open it again, I can't see anything but a black screen. I have to reset the computer manually to accessUbuntu again. On a related note probably.. for 'some' screensavers, when I click to re-access my desktop, the screensaver freezes, but I can't see the unlock dialogue. I can however still type my password and it will unlock, I just can't see what I'm doing

Debian :: Blank Screen Upon Resume From Suspend?

Jan 28, 2010

Up until a couple days ago, my computer had no problems suspending to ram. However, now when I suspend, and later hit a key on the keyboard (usually space) to resume, all I see is an illuminated black screen. I can't even open a tty via Ctrl+Alt+F1. I can however ssh into the machine.he only possibility I can think of is that I am no longer running kdm. I just use "startx" to star an openbox-session.

I have a problem with resume from ram on my hardware. I tried to install Karmic Alternate and Lucid Alternate (command line only). After resume I have no screen and the monitor is off. I also tried different pm-quirks, in combination too. I tried to install the nouveau driver on lucid but then the monitor is always off. I guess to install the nvidia-driver is no solution for a command line system?

Slackware :: 13.37: Crazy Flashing Screen After ACPI Resume?

May 6, 2011

Slackware 13.37 is giving me ugly suspend/resume problems. When I suspend to RAM and my laptop wakes up again, I get a corrupt screen flashing like crazy. This happens when I suspend from the console and when in X11; be it by issuing 'echo mem >/sys/power/state' or 'pm-suspend'.Tried the 'save-pci' quirk for 'pm-suspend', no dice.Tried to POST the card with 'vbetool' after resume, no dice. Tried to save/restore vbestate before and after suspend/resume, no dice. What is one supposed to do to get this stuff to work in 2011?Funny thing that suspend-to-disk works as it should. Also, with 12.2 I would pick a VGA mode for the console in 'lilo.conf' and it would freaking stick. Not anymore. Now the 1st half of the boot is performed in my chosen mode (80x30), then it switches to maximum resolution with an idiotically unsightly small font.My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5101 with an ATI Radeon 200M card.Is anyone going thru the same hell or has anyone found a fix?

CentOS 5 :: Lock Screen After System Resume From Suspend / Hibernation?

Mar 21, 2009

For the sake of security, I want the screen to be locked after the system is resumed from suspend or hibernation. Now the only way I can do this is to check the options "Lock screen when screen saver is active." in the screensaver preference. But this method is annoying since I have to type the password to quit the screensaver. Is there other way to do this? Thanks.

By the way, I use CentOS 5.2 x86_64.

Ubuntu :: Attempting To Move /usr To Another Partition?

Aug 1, 2010

I recently bought a SSD and decided to give the majority of the space to windows for production purposes I gave 3.5GB for ubuntu but that filled up rather fast so i decided to move the folder taking up the most space to another partition which is /usr.

I tried moving the /usr to another partition and using a symbolic link but that didn't work so i'm trying (and would prefere this method anyway) to use fstab to do it

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

I have Ubuntu 9.10. The batter drained several days ago, and now when I attempt to boot I simply get a string of indecipherable error messages which last for about 5 minutes, and the screen then goes completely black. I am not able to even get to the login screen. Windows 7 Starter boots fine, so it's definitely a software issue. Any solutions short of completely reinstalling? I really don't want to lose all of my data.

I have /home on a separate partition. Using the manual recovery I can see that the partition still exists and has all the files.

What do I need to do in order to get /home mounting again? Is this even the issue?

Ubuntu :: X/GDM Crashes Then Dies While Attempting To Restart Once Per Second?

May 29, 2011

This can't be duplicated by anything specific, but I know it's not out of RAM at this point. The console keyboard and mouse are inoperational, and the monitor display seems to be going through test patterns, which turns out to be that the monitor is trying to sync to video output which is switching on about once a second. I can ssh into the box and see that many processes that were running are no longer running, for example gnome-session... and that once per second there is a new X process invoked with a different auth-for-gem parameter, per below:

/usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-Kynptf/database -nolisten tcp
(one second later...)
/usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-GfBhRk/database -nolisten tcp

Ubuntu :: Hide User From Login Screen Lucid?

Oct 29, 2010

I actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.

It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.
