I have compiz fusion and an ATI card (FGLRX driver) installed. This means that my windows are painfully slow to resize/min/max. This has bugged me for awhile, but apparently someone found a fix, as specified in: 107_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch
[Basically, they commented out most of a function].
how do I apply this patch? It causes problems for people using KDE on intel cards, but that won't bother me since I'm AMD on gnome.
VLC is my favorite multimedia player, but when I tray to play any video show with RMVB extension it doesn't work so good ! I mean not as much as if I used any other software ( like for Example: Totem! ) . so I've made a search on the internet and found a patch that can solve the problem ( from here & here ).
I'm using ubuntu 10.10. I heard about BFS kernel patch, that this patch has great improvement for desktop systems.
Now, I have this question: Do developers of linux kernel(kernel.org) apply these kinds of patches to kernel source for next releases? if no, how can I apply this patch to my ubuntu kernel?
My system has been crashing, and I think it may have something to do with Gnome since the crashes only occur when I'm using it. I checked the log file after a crash and it reported...
so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I couldn't find much information regarding it online, and the only stuff I did find applied to using Gnome's git hub.
I am trying to compile the iscsi-target software SCST. It wants me to apply a patch to my Linux kernel in order to allow for certain performance gains. The problem is I still new to Linux development. Where do I begin? How do I apply the patch? Do I need to recompile the kernel? I am running Ubuntu 10.04.3 amd64
Is there any way to make emerald apply to Songbird? I've got all my maximize-minimize-close buttons on the left side of the windows now, only Songbird refuses to adapt to the new style.
I have to install ubuntu on 3 computers. Installing updates and applications on each takes a lot of time (even though i use a script to install all the updates and software).
So is it possible for me to install lucid on a usb flash drive (unetbootin) apply all the patches & software and then run the installation on each computer from the flash drive.
Will it work?
Or i will have to follow the way i generally do, by a script .
Is there any way to apply dependency (order) to the execution of init.d scripts ? I wrote a script and put it in init.d folder and then executed the relative update-rc.d command, but the problem is that the command fails executing on boot time, but it executes with no problem manually. I found that it requires another service (mysql) which I guess it's not ready in time which the scripts starts.
I love the theme that the Netbook remix 10.04 LTS has, but I jumped the gun installed desktop onto my laptop (not a atom based laptop). It works no problem. Is there anyway I can get Netbook remix theme loaded into 10.04 LTS desktop that is default with netbook 10.04 LTS? Searched the gnome sites for theme, background, art, etc, nothing.
My wife doesn't like gnome so I said I could make the desktop look like Windows 7. I've downloaded the theme pack but I can't find any instructions on how to apply it.
Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Installation went OK.When it starts I see the following message;"Could not apply stored configuration to monitors. Error on line 1 Char 1. Document was empty or contained white space"Maximum monitor resolution is 800x600 although my monitors is capable to 1280x1024 and Refresh Rate is 56 or 60. I do not know what happened. But when I move the text files back and forth between Windows and Linux, the enters/paragraphs gets messed up and square characters appears. And I think it got worse when I deleted those squares. So now it is one very long line. How do I get the long line to break every 50 characters but not having the last word get cut off mid-word? I am thinking "cat textfile > something" but I do not know what that something is.
I am experiencing a problem reading long filenames on dual-layer 8.5 Gb DVDs. SEE: [URL] I am considering a possible solution might be a firmware update. The drive is a Toshiba-Samsung : SE-S084B/RSBN [TSST=Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corp] Samsung provides ONLY windows updates or a web-based *windows-only* method of installing same. SEE: [URL] Is it possible to apply a firmware update using WINE?
I have some programs that I have already uninstalled, but that I now realize have left behind files on my computer. I went to the package manager and selected them for complete removal, but the apply button will not work. Same with ctrl P. Is there a way to get it to completely erase these programs? Is there a better way to go about this?
Whenever I start Synaptic package manager it shows some changes to apply and when I click apply it shows error E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1.
I want to add my daughter as a user and give her full permissions to all the same folders and files that I use. I have given her permission to folders and their sub folders however she doesn't have rwx on the individual files within the folders. What is the command line to set this up?
Also with the command;
Code: chown -R root:root files
what is the -R for and when do I need or not need it?
Running 10.04 very nicely, but I have applied a cursor theme - Comixcursor - which appears fine in my Gnome apps, but does not in my KDE apps, i.e. Amarok, and I get the default cursor. Each time I restart my lappy, I have to go into the KDE System Settings to apply it again.
I would like to sort ALL my Evolution email folders in reverse date order (most recent message to appear first). You can create a customized view, but you then have to apply this view to EACH folder individually - not fun if you have hundreds of folders... I don't seem to be able to edit the "default" view called "Messages", the Edit button remains greyed out when you select that view...
I found a filter I like, and I need to apply it on a couple thousand photos, how can I apply this in gimp to all these photos without having to work them one by one?
