Ubuntu Installation :: Display Error Notification 'Could Not Apply The Stored Configuration For Monitors X Server Does Not Support Size Requested' On Bootup

May 8, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid, I am getting the following dialog warning on login: 'Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors X Server does not support size requested' Im using the current proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver with dual heads. My display is fine, but the warning every time I login is annoying. After googling around I found this thread: [URL]. I tried going to Monitor Preferences as suggested. My resolution as displayed in the default tool is set to 3840 x 1200, which I suspect is the issue forcing the dialog, but I cant change the resolution, refresh rate or rotation from the Monitor Preference dialog box. dino99's response (in the referenced post) about xorg.conf not being needed anymore seems relevant. How can I resolve this issue and get rid of this annoying warning? Is there a configuration that I can update with a supported resolution to placate lucid?

Ubuntu :: X11 Configuration For Dual Monitors?

Nov 1, 2010

I have a brand new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I'm using a GeForce 8600GT graphics chipset. I have two monitors, and my goal here is to have them both working under Ubuntu in their full resolutions, and I've not had any luck with this yet. I've got a Viewsonic VE155s with a native resolution of 1024x768, and a Chimei CMV 221D with a native resolution of 1680x1050. When I first installed Ubuntu, both monitors were working, and the VE155s was working in its native resolution of 1024x768, but the CMV221D was stuck in 640x480.

The Nvidia video configuration utility was not identifying the latter monitor - it only reported it as DFP-0, and doesn't allow any resolution above 640x480 to be set. The mechanism (which has a name which I don't recall) which allows the OS to interrogate the monitor's firmware to find out the monitor manufacturer, model and accepted resolutions and frequencies to use does not seem to have worked. (I previously had the Nvidia driver installed, but I've since switched back to the default open source vesa driver. I won't use the closed Nvidia driver if I don't need to, but if I need to use it to get acceptable performance from this hardware than I will.)

So I did a little bit of reading and I did some hacking of xorg.conf. Previously I had the 15" monitor working in 1024x768 and the 22"
monitor working in 640x480. Now I've got the 22" monitor working in 1680x1050 as desired, and the 15" monitor not working at all. Here's a copy of my xorg.conf. For the sake of brevity I have not included the unnecessary bits such as input devices.

Code:

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVidia"
#Driver "nvidia"

Fedora :: Where Are Stored PWs For Remote Desktop Viewer Stored?

Oct 20, 2010

I have machine that I used to VNC to on my network with Remote Desktop Viewer from my Fedora 12. When I first connected I checked the checkbox that I wanted to store the pw. Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.

Debian Configuration :: Jessie Nvidia-settings Multiple Monitors

Aug 30, 2015

I've always used Debian with a single monitor and no need of proprietary drivers, because I usually don't do graphics or multimedia. Now I'm asked to set-up a machine with 3 nvidia video cards (770) and 4 monitors and everything went south. I started with just 2 monitors connected to 2 different video cards, not wanting to push my luck.

I installed a fresh Jessie and followed the instruction to install the nvidia drivers and tools from the Wiki. Everything went smooth. After reboot I executed (as root) nvidia-settings and I configured the two monitors to be one to the right to the other, with BaseMosaic option (at this point just one monitor was active) I saved the configuration to /etc/X11/xorg.conf , I even executed nvidia-xconfig as suggested, I rebooted and nothing happened, only one monitor was working, while the other -- looking again in the nvidia settings -- was still disabled.

I then tried with xinerama option and things are even worse, since now both monitors are black. I can login in one textual shell, but then I don't know what to do, since in my 10+ years of linux ... I never had to mess with X server. Is there a way to at least recover a working X without reinstalling everything?

Debian Configuration :: Separate Virtual Desktops On Dual Monitors?

Jul 19, 2011

I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.

Debian Configuration :: Radeon DRI Driver, Clicking "Apply" It Fails?

Mar 3, 2011

i couldn't get out after many hours of reading documents/posts/forums etc.

The issue:In Kde 4.4.5, using xorg and radeon opensource driver, i can't set OpenGL for desktop effects. Clicking "Apply" it fails. OpenGL seems corrupted someway. I have to stay on XRender. This is the glxinfo output:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

The story:i was running previously kde with nvidia propertary driver and a nvidia board. Then i removed the board for a fault and put a sapphire radeon HD5450. Initially i set up propertary radeon fglrx. At the end, i decided to use the opensource drivers, removed in the best way all fglrx files and links. So i then followed the wiki for reinstall open source radeon drivers, did it many times, also reinstalling xorg with purge, same for libgl1-mesa-xxx etc, but i still cannot use the OpenGL hardware support (should be DRI, that is correctly installed but not loaded).

Seems to be really an opengl corruption, if i disable the check on apply, and select OpenGL rendering, i get a complete blank screen.

Some information of the system:

processor: 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel

[Basically, they commented out most of a function].

how do I apply this patch? It causes problems for people using KDE on intel cards, but that won't bother me since I'm AMD on gnome.

General :: Apply Patch To Gnome On Ubuntu?

Jun 20, 2010

My system has been crashing, and I think it may have something to do with Gnome since the crashes only occur when I'm using it. I checked the log file after a crash and it reported...

Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed

so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I couldn't find much information regarding it online, and the only stuff I did find applied to using Gnome's git hub.
