Ubuntu :: Alternative To "startupmanager" That Works In 11.04?
Jul 22, 2011
I did a fresh installation of ubuntu 11.04 desktop and i installed the package "startupmanager" to change boot option. This software doesn't work for me now, but when i tried it in ubuntu 10.10 it worked.is there an alternative to that software?
I've created my own usplash theme and configured it using startupmanager. However, I'd like to know how to set it without using this GUI application, could someone tell me what would be the appropiate files to edit or commands to run
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat onto a USB stick. Booting up is fun but it does come up with a load of text and a blue menu screen that hangs around for 5 seconds and then loads up ok.
My challenge is to somehow customise the boot up process. For one I'd like to customise the options that are presented on the initial blue menu boot up screen and possibly to not show the back ground text that presents during the start up process.
I've googles about a bit and am aware that I need to be using startupmanager as the GUI customisation tool of choice. The trouble is that after installation startupmanager doesn't launch.
This is what I've done so far:
1. gone to [URL] and downloaded the startupmanager (1.9.13-5) version of the package.
2. gone to [URL] and downloaded the menu 2.1.44ubuntu1 as looking at the the pre-requisites for startupmanager this was the only one not already installed.
3. from a terminal window executed sudo dpkg -i <the previously downloaded startupmanager package>
4. from a terminal window executed sudo dpkg -i <the previously downloaded menu package>
5. Tried to launch it from the systemadministration menu. Nothing obvious happened.
6. Created a shortcut of the startupmanager shortcut on the desktop and viewed the properties.
7. opened up a terminal windows and launch command su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/startupmanager which was originall shown within the startupmanager properties of the shortcut.
From this last terminal command I get the output as follows:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/startupmanager Grub2 detected Usplash not detected Splashy not detected
I upgraded my wife's dual boot netbook (Ubuntu/Win7) from 10.10 to 11.4. Windows was set as the default OS in Grub v 1.98 via startupmanager in 10.10 and that's the way I want it to be again. After the 11.4 upgrade, Ubuntu 11.4 is set to defualt and even though I changed the default in startupmanager it always defaults to Ubuntu on boot. It's interesting to note that when I go back in to startupmanager to see what's up after reboot, it still has Win 7 selected.
Also, the choices in startupmanager look a little different from what shows up in grub. Grub shows just the latest version of ubuntu (and recovery mode), the memtest stuff, windows, and "previous versions of ubuntu" while startupmanger just lists all three ubuntu version w/recovery options, memtest stuff, and Win 7. If I do sudo update-grub in terminal, it lists the available options just like startupmanager does.
Bottom line, Win 7 will boot if manually selected, but I can't set it to default, and this is my wife's netbook so she wants it put back I just remembered and I don't know if it would matter or not. I did the original Ubuntu install first, then win 7. I used a windows program called easyBCD to get back the ability to choose which OS on startup. When I upgraded 10.10 to 11.4, Grub is back in charge. If I manually select Win7 to boot in grub, that easyBCD selection menu will pop up for a sec, offereing windows or ubuntu.Could this be confusing startupmanager and not letting my changes take effect?
Does anyone know of some things I can check to find the root cause behind this error? I pulled startupmanager via apt-get, and I get an error when I try to launch the startupmanager executable from a terminal in Gnome.

I've got a problem in doing sudo working for mounting things (e.g. usb pen or optic discs). Details:The OS: Slackware 13.0The response to sudo -l command:

I use the TV + HDMI cable. Versions tested 32BITS/64BITS (stay with x64) has no disk error. already downloaded several times. MD5 is correct well ... I'll start here with my concerns ... version 9.04 onwards does not work gives blackscreen. I think "forgotten" by the generic drivers for ATI or something that influences the video. it does not show. 9.10,10.04,10.10 none of those versions worked ... on other computers functioned normally. I found researching how to dribble and go to live. and thus unable to install. but does not work after the pc restarts. Linux does not. shows nothing ... goes to black screen with the (- FLASHING) but nothing else happens.
I have used TurboTax online for several years to do my return....this year they are refusing Firefox running on a Linux OS!Anyone know of an alternative that is Linux friendly?
i've been searching for GTD app alternative to OmniFocus but till now i couldn't find any REAL apps that's use the real methodology of GTD don't answer me with one of those apps 'cause i've tried them and they are either ugly or poor or both
I use dual monitors and it's extremely important to me to arrange them and keep 'em reliable. So I have been looking for an alternative for DisplayFusion on ubuntu since 1 year but I couldn't find any good result, if you know any sort of good drivers or programs to arrange the desktop and scale backgrounds perfectly.
Been playing around with the new Ubuntu 11.4 and really don't like it. The previous versions were much better. How long will Ubuntu 10.10 be supported and what would be a good alternative to eventually switch to?
just wondering if there is an alternative to Ssreenlets available? Love the program, but on 11.04 a lot of the Screenlets just don't work yet. Yes, I am aware that this may also happen on an alternative, but was just wondering, if anyone knows?
I'm fairly new to the Ubuntu community, having dl'ed Ubuntu 11.04 little more than a couple of weeks ago, deleting my Windows completely. I'm sure this has been said before, but I'm trying to find a good VoIP I can use to call my Windows using girlfriend who is currently very far away. Skype for Linux just crashes for me after a minute or two, Ekiga only allows me to make a call to any contact ONCE, then I can never do it again, tried Faceflow and couldn't even see or hear her. I'm running out of options, it seems. Will I really have to go back to windows just to see her?
I've been having some issues with the speed of firefox recently (on a netbook) and have been trying out other browsers such as chrome and midori. Currently I'm using xmarks, which fits my needs nicely however, I'm looking for an alternative that gives similar functionality and would allow me to access my bookmarks from several different computers (using both midori and chrome browsers).
xmarks has a development version for chrome, which is not working at the moment, and I cannot find any plans for xmarks in midori.
I've read through others posts about installing Dreamweaver with WINE, but want to know what everyone here recommends. I see Quanta and Bluefish are pretty popular but haven't tried either one. Is it better to just use Dreamweaver or one of the alternatives?
Looking for something to control my sound right on gnome-panel with a drop down, but that doesn't have the little envelope function that I never use anyhow and is wasting space.
I keep hearing about this "alternative installation CD" so that I can encrypt my hard drive. But I can never seem to find it. I would like to use it and do a new install with an encrypted HD. Also, know I can google it, but I was hoping someone could point me to a how to on encrypting grub.
I would like to ask your thoughts of the security of a computer that has the bios password protected, grub password protected and the HD encrypted. I know it all seems excessive unless you are afraid of people who have physical access to your computer, which I am. I also know physical access = root access and that given physical access there is no way to secure the computer, however that does not mean I should not make it harder and more time consuming for the evil maid.
So I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that operates in hexadecimal, binary (maybe), and decimal, for fairly large values. While openoffice does handle hexadecimal fine, if you convert it to decimal (at least so far, if anybody has a more naturalistic way of doing this, that would be great), it can't seemingly handle how large the values are, and truncates. So, if possible, I would like an open source alternative that is perhaps more robust than OpenOffice. Hopefully one exists.
