Ubuntu Installation :: Swap Partition Won't Mount After Kernel Upgrade?

Dec 1, 2010

I just installed kernel 2.6.37-rc3-natty in an effort to clear up the audio stuttering problems prevalent in Maverick. It worked, but now my swap partition won't mount on startup and because of this the computer won't hibernate. I'm using a Toshiba NB305-400 netbook w/1GB of ram, 250GB HDD and 1.6 GHz processor. Here's what's in my fstab file:Quote:

# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10 To 10.4 - Kernel Panic - Unable To Mount Root

May 13, 2010

I had 9.10 installed on my IBM Lenovo Thinkpad, x301. I was performing updates as normal, and chose the Upgrade button to upgrade me to 10.04. Everything started fine, but upon reboot, no bueno, Kernel Panic!

The exact message was "Kernel Panic ubuntu - not synching VFS Unable to mount root fs".

I thought this was a grub issue. Since grub2 now is installed... But it was not. I think it ended up being a problem with some of my configuration files.

I have three kernels I tried:
1. 2.6.32-22
2. 2.6.31-21
3. 2.6.31-20

The first threw me into the kernel panic.
The second would hang on "init crypto disks"
The third would hang on "checking battery state"

I noticed (from reading another thread) that while these are loading up that you can click on alt-ctl-F1 thru F6 and get prompt. (I also had my home directory encrypted, thought that was part of the problem, but it wasnt).

Once I get passed the loging, I am able to poke around. I tried manually start Gnome via "sudo service gdm start", but it failed. Said it was missing a configuration file. Then I tried on "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and it would not work. Saying some configuration files are missing or broken. It also said something about dpkg --configure -a, I am assuming this configures everything...

So I tried "sudo dpkg --configure -a" And selected 'y' to every option. Which basically installs the package creators default settings, and viola! Works.

Just wanted to share that knowledge for the other stuck in the upgrade hell.

Normally I would just copy my files off and reinstall, but it was encrypted... Another headache. I guess good in case someone stole my laptop.

Remember try to "sudo dpkg --config -a"

The server runs# uname -r2.6.18-128.4.1.el5However, today I executed yum update kernel*due to security advisory. Debian :: Upgrade Debian 3 Kernel 2.4.18 To Kernel 2.6 Or Bigmem-kernel?

Nov 11, 2010

We have a Dell 1850 with Debian with 2.4.18 kernel running some critical applications, now the issue is we need to upgrade the memory to 8 GB but the memory is detected by the bios itself, Operating system is not able to detect it, it is showing 3096MB of memory,

After a lot of googling and the artical in linux.com/archive/articles/119287 :: Got more than a gig of RAM and 32-bit Linux? Here's how to use it i came to know the solution i.e

1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,

2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel

Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM

Ubuntu :: Kernel Panic, Unable To Mount Root?

Feb 2, 2010

I recently (a couple weeks ago) installed Ubuntu on my desktop computer dual booting with Win XP (which I am using right now). I used Wubi to install it, and everything went fine. I used Ubuntu without a problem up until a few days ago. I am using an install of Ubuntu (I am not running it off a disc, USB drive or through the Wubi software).

I restarted my computer after using Ubuntu constantly for the time I've had it installed. It booted into Win XP (because it was first on the list where you select which OS to load) so I restarted again and tried to boot into Ubuntu. Instead of working, it gave me the error "Kernel panic - not syncing: unable to mount root" or something like that. So, I restarted again, and it was the same thing. I restarted in recovery mode, and it was the same thing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Mount DVD Drive After Upgrade From 9.10 To 10.04

I have an LG DVD+RW and an older DVD drive...FSTAB contains the following:

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

I see a cdrom0 in "Places", but get the following error when access:

"Unable to mount cdrom0. mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0"

I do see the following mount points in the filesystem under media:

/media/cdrom0
/media/cdrom1

I assum my fstab entry is incorrect... not sure how to resolve though. I'd like to get my DVD+RW working, so I can burn a Live CD and re-install from scratch instead of upgrade.

Ubuntu :: CD/DVD Drive Won't Mount After Upgrade To Lucid?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm running ubuntu Lucid Lynx on an asus K50IJ series laptop. I'd had jaunty before and made a fresh install of lucid. My CD drive had been fine in jaunty, but doesn't mount any more in lucid. I have found numerous threads with promising-looking titles, but they either do not match my problem or their solutions don't work for me.

This is my situation: The disc will turn for a bit after inserting, then stop. During that, the little light on the drive will flash a few times, then wink out. So I guess the power supply's fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Mount Drives After Upgrade

Mar 10, 2011

a few days a go I got Samba messed up and I decided to just reinstall Ubuntu. Ubuntu resides on an 80GB drive and I have 2 1.0 TB drives that I use for storage. At one time (pre-Ubuntu) they were connected to a VIA SATA RAID card and I had them on a software RAID under Windows XP. Both worked absolutely fine under Ubuntu 10.04 (which had bee progressively upgraded from the original install of 9.04.

Now, both drives have been given the same label, and neither one will mount because the file system type is reported as "via_raid_array" rather than the EXT4 that they both should be. TestDisk can read them and identifies the partition as a Linux partition, and the data seems to be there. I have even reformatted one of them and still, it will not mount.

Yesterday, I was offered 2.6.32-30 by the update manager and accepted it.

However, I can't boot up using that kernel. I get no video. (I'm now choosing -29 at bootup instead of -30. It still works.)

What should I be trying in order to get -30 to work?

Slackware :: Kernel Tries To Mount Wrong FS Type?

Aug 13, 2010

I just installed Slackware 13.1 x86 on a new laptop (you probably remember me from my audio post). I am having one other issue. My root file system is formatted as EXT4. When my computer boots, it tries to mount it as EXT3 then EXT2, fails both types and then tries EXT4. Here are the messages.

Code:
EXT3-fs (sda2): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT2-fs (sda2): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
So, eventually / is mounted correctly, but I think this is slowing down my boot time. Does anyone know how to fix this.

Fedora Servers :: Nfs Mount After Upgrade To F14?

Feb 8, 2011

I have upgraded one of the computers on my network to Fedora 14 (previously Mandriva 2010.1). There's a directory on another machine that I want to mount on this one. The directory can be mounted OK on two other machines in the network (including one running Fedora 13) and, before the upgrade could be mounted on this one, so the nfs server is OK.

If I try to mount manually I get the following:

[root@lipwig Documents]# mount -v 192.168.8.4:/backup /mnt/librarian/
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Feb 8 12:17:00 2011
mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'vers=4,addr=192.168.8.4,clientaddr=192.168.8.12'
mount.nfs: mount(2): Operation not permitted
mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'addr=192.168.8.4'
mount.nfs: prog 100003, trying vers=3, prot=6

[Code]...

/etc/hosts has the names and ip addresses of all the machines on the network so the reverse dns lookup (which I have fallen foul of in past years) shouldn't be an issue. So I'm kind of out of ideas. I don't recall there being any problem accessing this mount with Fedora 13 .

Ubuntu :: Way To Automatically Upgrade Kernel?

Aug 4, 2010

I added the PPA: 'deb [URL]... So basically, every time there is a kernel update in there, such as 'linux-image-2.6.35-15-generic' or something, I must 'sudo apt-get install' it manually. Anybody know how to have it automatically install the latest kernel? Is that even possible?

I recall seeing something about this before, but can't find the thread. It's a fairly simple fix to get the graphics running again, but I can't remember what the solution is.
