I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 and Apache.I connect to the machine via FTP. It seems as if the connection times out every few seconds. If I u/l a file it will take 15 seconds to connect. Once that connection is open I can u/l more files instantly. If I wait a few seconds it closes, then I have to wait another 15 seconds for it to reopen. Any ideas how to make it not time out so frequently?
View 9 RepliesOn my linux machine, I've enforced a password expiry policy every 45 days. So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Karmic the other day and my Wireless Internet has been disconnecting every hour or so. I had the same problem on Intrepid but I managed to fix it somehow. After disconnecting, it will reconnect after a few seconds.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am far too often getting connections dropped when trying to load web pages from my local server. From my mac running Safari I get the error message "Safari can't open the page...because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection." From Firefox on my Ubuntu 0.10 desktop it opens the window that says "You have chosen to open index.php..." and ask if I should edit the file or save it. When I tail the apache2 access.log it shows the previous successful page load but the one that failed is not mentioned. In error.log I get some stuff I don't understand, except the last line which says aborted:

I used to sync my local directories via smb4k plus synkron to the server. It works like a charm including kernel 2.6.38.BUT with 2.6.39 it doesn't. /var/log/messages says:

I've been messing around with debian A LOT, getting to know it, seeing what makes it run. I recently screwed up big time and nearly rendered it unusable, but I managed to slowly repair it. However, I was unable to do any kind of auto-DHCP connections. Now when I put eth0 up, the connection will cut out after about 5 seconds, and I can't connect any more until I either restart the networking service or do ifdown then ifup.So can anyone suggest to me any logs I should look for, or any packages I should make absolutelyure I have installed and configured properly? After I open the dvd rom tray either via ubuntu or by the eject button, it closes automatically. I have two dvd drives insalled, but only one has this problem. It's been a month that this problem started occurring, but it's not a hardware problem since both drives work fine in windows.

When I go to open Openoffice again it asks if I want to run a recovery, I opt for that and it gets me back into the file (which is empty).I have tried saving the file in html format but, the same thing happens.I can paste into Tomboy without problem so it must be the Openoffice program.Maybe I should simply hop over to Sun Microsystems with this, mmm.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile using my laptop, (touchpad) if I click on a link in a web page, sometimes it will open in a new tab, other times it will not. I would prefer it to never open in a new tab unless I ask it to. BUT, the really annoying thing is that when I click on the tab that appears, it just closes. I think this is a bug because sometimes the tab says something about java with some strange characters mixed with it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedBanshee only recently started doing this: When I play an song it works fine but if I click on skip it plays the next song for about 1-2 seconds then Banshee just closes. Also if I just let the song play (or skip to the end of the song) it also closes within 1-2 seconds of playing the next song. If I'm half way through a song I can click on another song to play it and it works fine through.I've tried disabling all my extensions but that didn't make any difference.
If I launch Banshee by typing 'banshee' into Terminal (and then play a song and press the skip button) this is what the Terminal says:

Anywhere from 2 -> 6 times a day, my computer will freeze up. If any audio was playing, it will repeat the last few seconds over and over again.
I've been dealing with the problem for a couple of months now, with no solutions.
It can happen anytime, but it tends to happen on my screensaver about 50% of the time after I've locked my computer and during the early morning (12am onwards) when I have a full-screen video playing, but it's never done it at night in the same circumstances.
I am confused and just can't figure out the problem.

user of Kubuntu 10.0.4. So far, one of the major things I miss is the ability to have my system sleep when I close the lid of my laptop. Any tips on how to enable this behavior? Note: as I said, I'm brand new to linux, so the simpler you can explain things, the better!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu Lucid beta 2 and had installed Lord of the rings online with pylotro which worked brilliant. But due to some problems with lucid i decided to reformat. I installed wine, winetricks, all the necesary files and went to install lotro that went brilliantly, set up pylotro that was fine, patched and just to be sure also installed the CLI client of lotro. Now when i start the client, it loads up everything so I can select realm, enter user name and password I select to login my screen changes resolution, the screen goes black it closes. Here are the results I get on both pylotro and the CLI installer...can anyone make any sense of the reason behind the crash?

I can't open my terminal anymore. I changed a preference under the Title and Command tab in the preferences of the GNOME terminal. I put a custom command instead of the normal shell, but after I closed I realized that under the "When Command Exits" menu, I chose "Close Terminal". This means that the terminal closes automatically as soon as the command is done. After I open, it finishes the command and closes. I was wondering whether there is some way to change the terminal preferences from somewhere else or reinstall the terminal, and I obviously can't use terminal commands.

i just slammed ubuntu 11.04 onto a spare server i had and im having a real issue with remote desktopping from my Win7 computer, ive checked the settings for the remote desktop server on 11.04 and all seem fine, i go to connect to it using tightVNC from my win7 machine, ask's for password, fill that out then click connect, and as soon as i hit connect it connects for about 1 second, then says there was an error contacting the server, i checked 11.04 and it then says that i can only connect via local host and not the IP address anymore.

I thought perhaps pipes in /proc/[pid]/fd/..
I just upgraded to Natty on a (almost brand new) HP pavilion dm4t. I'm finding that it crashes pretty frequently, in a variety of ways that might or might not be related.
1) Sometimes (every 2-3 days) it will just blink out and go back to the login screen. This usually happens within a minute or so of logging in. If I log in again after this, it will usually crash again. A restart of the system typically will make the problem go away for at least a few sessions.
2) If I leave the computer on for a while, the screensaver will freeze and nothing can get me back to the desktop. Processes seem to still be running behind it (I left some music playing once and the music continued to play, but the screen was black and I couldn't get back to my desktop - I had to do a hard shutdown)
3) A perhaps unrelated problem, every ten sessions or so when I log in the indicator applet will be gone and an error telling me that indicator applet failed to load (or something to this effect)
Btw I'm using ubuntu classic rather than unity (just because I like it better). I haven't used Unity enough to know whether these problems also occur with it.
I started using 10.10 a few months ago and had very few problems aside from a few minor issues with Wine. I frequently used Skype under 10.10 and it ran perfectly with no issues whatsoever.
Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and well... basically things have just gone downhill from there.
Over the past few days Skype has been ridiculously unstable, I'll be talking to somebody using text chat and it will essentially freeze up. These freezes can occur within minutes of starting Skype and are very infuriating. I am still able to type and send messages but the "message not sent" icon will appear next to each of them and the timestamp on each message will be identical (the messages in question will not send even after a restart of Skype). This problem will persist until I force-quit the application, closing it normally will not work and often I have to restart my computer entirely before it will work again.
I have tried updating to the latest version of Skype to no avail (if anything I think it has made matters worse, but that may just be my imagination.)
I'm not particularly command savvy, just posting on the off chance that anybody has encountered the same problem or has found a relatively simple fix. I don't really want to have to re-install the entire OS just to roll back to 10.10.
I'm looking at conky and my cpu frequency is fluctuating really fast (in a relatively narrow range) but from second to second I can see a 2-3 degree change, is this even possible? It seems like the sensors aren't working right if they are showing changes that fast.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Nautilus Elementary and Gloobus Preview, and am having a problem with Gloobus Preview. At first, when I pressed the gear icon, the menu would come down. Then, I changed toggled the preferences so that Gloobus Preview would quit when it lost focus, and so that it would always be on top. Now, whenever I click the gear, Gloobus Preview shuts down. I ran it from the terminal, and nothing abnormal happens when it quits from a gear press. Could it be something about the close button position being goofed up? I don't think so, because the expand picture button also makes it quit. It's weird, though, because the open in application button on Gloobus Preview doesn't "crash" it. It opens up in the Image Viewer. I tried modifying the preferences in /usr/bin, but that didn't do anything. Purging and reinstalling also does nothing.

I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.

I can connect to my Ubuntu box remotely with VNC, but if I type any character anywhere, it closes out the window I was typing in. I dont seem to have a problem clicking and opening windows and applications, I just cant type anything into them without the window closing. Has anyone seen this behavior and know what the fix is?
