Ubuntu :: Bad SSL Certificate Check In Evolution?

May 19, 2010

I opened Evolution to send an email, and up popped this warning: What's more, I can't get rid of the warning: clicking Cancel does no good, nor clicking the X in the corner of the box. And if I try to close it via the "Window Menu" at the top left corner of the box, Close does nothing. I haven't tried clicking OK, because I don't know what I'd be agreeing to.

Ubuntu :: Evolution - Store Emails At Linked Location After Upgrade To 11.04

May 11, 2011

Way back in the day (7 something I think) I had made my .evolution into a link pointing to a very large harddrive. That said, I've never had a problem as evolution happily grabs and stores my e-mails at that linked location. Since the upgrade to 11.04, I still have evolution but it does not store it where I expect it to store it. I still have my little .evolution link in my profile. I still have my old e-mails there but I have no idea where evolution is storing my new e-mails. I don't have any of my folders and my online e-mail stack is growing by the minute

General :: Where Does ITunes Store Its Stuff - Copy Its Data Store To An External Drive

Dec 8, 2009

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.

Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.

Where does iTunes store its stuff?

Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?

Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?

Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?

Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?

Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?

Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

General :: Evolution - Changing Account Information, Imports, And "keyrings"?

Feb 21, 2011

I just set up Ubuntu on a computer for my wife today. My first attempt at a working system rather than just a demo. For certain reasons, afterwards I found it necessary to change passwords in the Evolution account. There does not seem to be an obvious way to do this from within Evolution. A bit of "guru" level advice says that something has to be deleted in some "gnome" directory, presumably on the occult command line level of business - but this was a several-years old msg and perhaps Evolution has "evolved". At my newbie level, I am afraid to do anything like deleting things in directories I don't understand.

Also, is there a way to import mail from Outlook Express .dbx folder files? Wife has thousands of valuable emails on her defunct WinXP computer. Finally, at one point Evolution asks for a "keyring password". Not only do I not know the password, I have never heard of the "keyring". Looking this up with a search engine gives an incomprehensible (to me, a newbie) explanation. Can I ignore this? Is there an explanation of why this heretofore unknown bit of Ubuntu arcana should surface? I thought Ubuntu was the Linux for the "rest of us". Should I just junk Evolution and install Mozilla Thunderbird? If so, is there a way to import the emails my wife has downloaded (733 at last count) from Evolution into Thunderbird?

OpenSUSE :: Version Of Evolution - Running The Evolution Mail System Under Fedora - 15 / KDE

Jul 26, 2011

I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.

It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

Fedora :: Error While Fetching Email. Evolution Version: Evolution 2.28.0

Apr 5, 2010

I had configured the evolution to send/recive email. After it had been configured, it could receive emails. Suddendly it can't fetch email anymore. In the inbox of evolution, there were about 200 emails. There are maybe 5K emails in the server, I guessed. I'm not sure whether it's the problem that there's one email in the server too big, so the evolution can not fetch it. The error of evolution is: error while fetching email. OpenSUSE :: Restoring Evolution 2.32.1.2 Settings Into Evolution 2.30

Feb 20, 2011

I have been using Fedora 14, which has Evolution 2.32.1 but have recently also installed openSUSE 11.3, which has Evolution 2.30.1.2. I would like to make openSUSE my primary distribution, and so I would like to restore my Evolution settings from Fedora, but Evolution complains that the backup file is invalid. I have tried copying the folders in the backup to their appropriate locations in openSUSE with no luck. I have also tried manually copying with instructions for older versions of openSUSE, but with no luck.

An obvious guess at what might be the problem seems to be that I am trying to restore settings from a newer version to an older version? An obvious thing to try would be to upgrade to Evolution 2.32, but Evolution has a long list of dependencies so before jumping into that fun I thought I would ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found a straight-forward solution. I still have access to my emails in Fedora so this is not hugely pressing, and if upgrading to 11.4 will do the trick then I can just wait for that.

Ubuntu Servers :: Encryption With Certificate And CA?

Oct 7, 2010

I have a server with Apache2 and I would like to use encryption to prevent eavesdropping POST requests and similar. I've had success using SSL with a self-signed certificate, but this will of course generate huge warnings from the web browser. It's no problem for me when I'm connecting to the server as I know what to expect, but any other user who sees such a warning will surely leave the site unless I have personally explained the procedure.

Is there really no way to encrypt HTTP without having to use certificates? I know that this is supposed to provide security by identifying the server, but my point is that an encrypted connection without a CA would in no way be inferior to one that sends passwords as plain text. All I want to do is prevent people who are using programs such as Cain or any other packet sniffer from getting their hands on my passwords. I'm not exactly running an online bank system her

Ubuntu :: Switched From Gnome To XFCE - Can't Use Certificate Login To Ssh

Mar 5, 2010

So I installed xubuntu-desktop and have been using XFCE as my desktop and everything's groovy except for one thing.

In Gnome, I created a certificate in order to allow me to login to my web host over SSH without requiring the SSH password (which is very long and complex, for good reason). It worked fine under Gnome but now in XFCE when I attempt to SSH to the server, my keyring password is not recognized.

Code:
andrew@guardian:~$ ssh <hostname of server>
Enter passphrase for key '/home/user/.ssh/id_dsa':
Enter passphrase for key '/home/user/.ssh/id_dsa':
Enter passphrase for key '/home/user/.ssh/id_dsa':
*****@*******.net's password:
(Note: I redacted the server name and username.)

A few weeks before switching to XFCE I changed my local username from user to andrew, which is why my home directory is called user, but it didn't break the keyring in Gnome.

How can I fix this? The certificate still works properly in PuTTY under Windows, so it's not the cert.

Edit: Using (X)Ubuntu Karmic.

Ubuntu Servers :: HTTPS - Cannot Accept Certificate Permanently

Oct 1, 2010

A few days ago I installed a new SVN server using ubuntu 10.04 server editiopn at our company and it runs almost flawlessly. Almost that is. The server uses a self-signed certificate so all communications go over https. The strange thing is this. When I run some svn command from my (windows) pc, like update I get asked whether or not I want to accept the certificate. Then I choose "accept permanently" end all goes well. In future command I don't get that question anymore. But when my colleague does the same from his pc, he also gets the same question. Now, when he chooses "accept temporary", all goes smooth. But when he chooses "accept permanently", like I did, he gets an error saying:

RA layer request failed
svn: OPTIONS of 'https://path_to_some_repo': Could not read status line: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.

Of course I googled on this and could find two things: Server settings are wrong
there's something wrong with the firmware of the router. The first couldn't almost be the case since it works for me and I followed the manuals. The second one couldn't be it either because when I log in with my account on my colleague's pc, it works. This is also the case when he logs on to my pc. So the problem exists specifically when he is logged in on his own pc. The setup of this machine is exactly the same as mine.
