I've just upgraded my installed software packages to last version of Lucid and noticed a weird issue: my keyboard keys are all messed up. Although my keyboard layout is still US-105 keys, when I press (for instance) "asdfg", I get "abfhj" and for "ASDFG" I get "1a1b1f1h1j" !? This only happens when I am logged as user in a X session. It has five buttons on the front just under the screen, which are the only ones accessible when you flip the screen over into tablet mode. One of them is for rotating the screen, and another is for switching to external display. I want to remap the remaining three to control, alt and super so that I can use shortcuts with the stylusThe problem is, when I used showkey to find out the key codes, I found out that each button generates more than one key code:Button 1:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Logitech K830 wireless 'Living Room' keyboard for general use under Debian/Gnome. The function keys (F1-F12) operate in conjunction with the FN key. Various multimedia options are alternately available by pressing the function keys (F1-F12) without the FN key.
I want to make the function keys primary (not requiring FN). 'xmodmap -e "keycode 172 = F11"' reassigns F11 as expected, but xev reveals multicode output for some keys that I cannot similarly remap. The (de-tabulated) table shows xev output for press-events. Single F(n) keycodes are followed by the equivalent multimedia keycodes (e.g. F2[+FN] key is also 'Minimize window'[without FN]).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 17 L702X running vanilla Wheezy. The laptop has 3 special soft touch keys above the keyboard. Using Dell software in Windows you can configure these for whatever, but in Debian/Linux they share the same functions as keyboard keys.
Key 1 -> Super_L Q
Key 2 -> Brightness Down
Key 3 -> Doesn't seem to do anything and xev doesn't report any key codes
Apparently other XPS models have similar keys with the same problem. It's not a show stopper but it would be nice to have them working.
When a user that has rsa public key set in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file logs in via ssh an sshd process is started to handle the ssh session.Periodically we audit the authorized keys and remove them from the system and authorized_keys file. This means the next log in attempt will fail, which is fine.However we need to terminate current ssh sessions in progress that use the rsa key.I have not been able to determine a way to map sshd processes with authorized_keys entries.
View 11 Replies View RelatedSince the upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10, I'm having issues with Xfce4-terminal. When I use aptitude, the home and end keys don't scroll the list to the top or bottom. With vim, it generates input of adding a new line with F or H on it above the current line. Ctrl+arrow left/right also generate unwanted signals/characters.This does not happen with Kubuntu or Ubuntu and when I install Gnome-terminal and use that, everything works as you expect. This even happens on the live environment. I don't want to use gnome-terminal, as it pulls in more packages than I need and the Xfce4-terminal should just work.
Another thing that happens is that when I read a man page or close vim or aptitude, it behaves as if it's in a TTY: the text it just showed stays on screen or it clears the bunch in the current view and puts the prompt at the bottom. It should be that the application just closes and you get the prompt back the way it was before you started to read the man page for example.It is purely a terminal emulator problem. Does anyone have a solution for these issues?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.
Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?
Is there a session manager I can use with 10.10? I would like to try Openbox but am not sure how to select it as a startup session. I would like to be able to choose between kde, gnome and openbox.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.
All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.
The following message comes up when I boot up: Logging in user Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 0. When I press OK, the system completes the start up and everything looks normal. But when I try to connect to internet, I get the following message:
KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future. If I reboot the system, I logg in successfully. So far the problem has appeared approximately upon every second time I boot up. Rebooting the system seems to take care of it.

I use tmout = 15 min in my /etc/profile (along with readonly tmout). i have some issues i need to address, looking for ideas.
1. what is considered a idle "session" ?
2. if i & a process to the background and do nothing is this a idle session?
3. if user uses su to a higher level, are there now two sessions? is the tmout for user suspended until su user time outs or leaves su session?
4. i have some users who will run long sql queries. is there a workaround to have the session remain active until process has finished?
I do a clean install of slackware64 13.1 beta1 with KDE and switch default runlevel to 4 in /etc/inittab.
I try to login in kdm, I always come back to the login....
I try this with default runlevel 3 and an .xinitrc with "ck-launch-session startkde" .. works without problems, so I switch back to default runlevel 4, now i can login and only get the error "Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session..."

I have found that the <Enter> key on the numeric keypad does not act the same as the <Enter> key on the main keyboard. Confirming a file copy in Gnome Commander for example. Using xev I found the following

So based on some research it seems I should be able to edit my ~/.Xmodmap to assign the same key (Return) to keycode 104 - the keypad <Enter> key. Except - I have no .Xmodmap. Did it move in Ubuntu 9.10? Do I have to create it? or does Ubuntu 9.10 use a "better" method of handling key mappings?
I am very very productive with the new Windows 7 taskbar. The ability to press Winkey + # to either:
1) Minimize that window if it is the window that currently has focus set to.
2) Restore the window the key combination is pressed but the window is not currently open. For example, if Firefox is the third tab across the bottom of the taskbar, and not currently open, I would like <Super> + 3 to restore this window for me, instead of having to do alt + tab, tab, tab, tab [OH! Now I finally got to it!]. I just work much faster with this convenient shortcut.
The Problems
1) I need to know how Ubuntu remembers the current location of an item on the taskbar. It must, as you are able to re-arrange items with a drag of the mouse. I need this to find out what item #, so when I press <Super> + num I can figure out what is the numth window across the bottom currently.
2) I need to know how to execute something like [psuedo-code for bash script]:[ie: How do I minimize? How do I check if a window is currently the focused window? How do I make it the current window?]
I am a programmer, I am willing to figure this out for myself at least partially, but how the hell do I find #1 without diving into thousands of lines of source? I could use some push in the right direction. I just switched to Ubuntu a month ago [from Windows, but I was very much a power-user and know my way around it well].
I've got an old Nostromo n50 speedpad that I decided I wanted to try to get to work with WoW. I have looked into the Nostromo Linux drivers and Pystromo, but I decided to dip my toes into Python with Gizmo Daemon because I should be able to use it for other gamepads in the future. Here's what I've done so far: Installed GizmoD from Synaptic. Read through the tutorials and HOWTOs on the website. Used gizmod -g to record the input from my Nostromo n50. Attempted to modify a GizmoD map file to do what I wanted. Up until the last part everything has been going fine. Here's the mapping of my input keys:

As you will see from the map file, I just want keys 01-10 to translate into my normal keyboard keys 1-9 and 0. The DPAD I want to translate into a normal WASD for gaming. I'm kind of stumped as to where to go from here. I run gizmod from a terminal, but it doesn't seem to work.
I've found that simply sharing a folder on my Ubuntu PC with other Linux PC's on my network proves unwieldy from an 'ownership' standpoint. For example, if I create a file from my Ubuntu Laptop and save it onto my Ubuntu Desktop 'share', I find that if I try to access it from the Desktop that the group/ownership prevents my access so I end up having to chown it. I'm finding sharing in a mixed environment to be a pain.
So, I recently configured an old desktop box with FreeNAS and I want to move all of my files from my main Ubuntu PC over to it, and have those files accessible from various clients (both Windoze and Linux) from thoughout my network. Now I've got the FreeNAS all set up and shared, and I'm ready to transfer files to it. What's the best way to mount Mr. FreeNAS on my various desktops and laptops such that sharing is not a problem from a security (group/owner) standpoint? Should I be using CIFS/SAMBA or is NFS mounting better? Will there be sharing problems or ownership issues when accessing from Windows?
Using Anthy with IBus I'm having troubles typing the correct characters. I have stickers set on my keys that correspond with the correct keys for Windows/Google IME. Unfortunately Anthy and IBus have my keys mapped differently than this for some reason. If I have "Use System Keyboard Layout" checked in IBus settings the character ろ isn't mapped at all and if I uncheck it, a very large number of characters are mapped to completely different keys. When I look at the keyboard layout for Japanese Kana I've also noticed that ろ is unmapped. If it's not clear, I typically type using 1 keystroke being equal to a single character rather than typing in Romaji.

Or basically, how will I either share or map the files *from* Ubuntu *to* XP? Also, the users will be reading, writing, creating and deleting files on the server.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 (Netbook Remix) installed on Asus EeePC 1000. Sometimes I use Apple Wired Aluminum keyboard for comfortable typing. There is no problem for me with netbook's keyboard, but i want to change the keys for the Apple one. For example: make F1-F12 keys really work like F-keys, not control keys; make Fn key to work like Insert key, and swap Cmd/Alt keys.
So, the main question - is it possible to change the layout of apple keyboard without changing the behavior of netbook keyboard? If not, then maybe there are some "switchers" that can constantly change mappings from one to another and back? And, at last, if there is no such tools, then what is the easiest way to do it manually?
