Ubuntu :: Way To Display All Installed Software By Date?
Apr 14, 2010
In Ubuntu is there a way to display all installed software by date? For example it would be handy to show the most recent installed software like in Revo Uninstaller in Windows.

I know "rpm -qa --last" lists all rpm with date and time. But I want to sort the list by date, with earlier installed rpms displayed ahead. So it needs pipe, ie something like "rpm -qa --last | ...". What is exact script to do it?

I'm using ubuntu Maverick on a Dell 1545 and I'm pretty much a newbie to ubuntu. Most of the things have been fine so far, I just plugged it into a proxyless internet connection and adjusted my location for time zone (I've been using a porxy server previously for internet which didn't allow changes in location and time zone work) and since then that calendar has moved out of the scope on the top right corner of my screen and I'm unable to move it.

I have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.

I'd like to tweak my Conky so it automatically displays the days of the week correctly. So for example, if TODAY were Tuesday, it would look like this:
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
[etc.]
And then tomorrow, *automatically*, it would look like this:
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
[etc.]
I know I can get it to display *today's* date like this:
${time %A}
But how do I get it to display tomorrow's date?

This is on an old machine that is running Solaris 7. I know that I can run the command script 'last' to get a list of who has logged in. When I do that I get a very long list of lines like:
username pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)
I see that the year is not posted. I have about 11 years worth of logins where users have logged in multiple times over several years.
So, here is what I need: I only need the date of the very last time a person logged in. I also need the year of that last login.
script that will do this? Something with output like
username1 pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 2005 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)
username2 pts/4 110.33.11.18 Tue Apr 20 2009 8:30 - 9:30 (01:00)
username3 pts/4 10.32.11.18 Mon Jun 12 2008 1:30 - 2:40 (01:10)
username4 pts/4 110.33.12.19 Sat Oct 10 2001 00:12 - 00:13 (00:01)

The following are the two tex input files written in vi and compiled with pdflatex. In the first case the document details (author, date etc) are displayed as desired but are omitted in the second case. The only difference is the use of maketitle.
Case 1:
documentclass{article}
author{Name}
date{}
itle{Title}
Begin{document}
maketitle
Text to be inputted
end{document}
Case 2:
documentclass{article}
author{Name}
date{}
itle{Title}
Begin{document}
Text to be inputted
end{document}

As a photographer I'm constantly taking photos and storing them in folders. Now occasionally I'm using two cameras (either for different settings or an assistant is also taking photos) which means that for one event I can have differently named images.Both cameras have the same time set (which always helps in Windows) but in Ubuntu when trying to sort my folder by date taken I can't.The options I'm given are to sort them: Manually, by Name, by Size, by Type, by Modification date and by Emblem.Now none of those are helpful to me once I've done a few edits to the images.So please if anyone knows, how do you organise a folder with images taken on different cameras by Date Taken rather than Date Edited?

I just did the upgrade and I want to turn off the display after 30 minutes. I check that selection but the display does not turn off after 30 minutes. It is still on. I enabled this setting through the power management. The screen saver is on, go to blank display but the monitor does not turn off.
On Windows, dual boot on the same machine, the monitor does display off. I don't know if this is part of the problem or not, but when I go to "System -> Preferences", there are two different "Screensaver" options.

I am using CRON to create a new, blank file, every minute, in a specific location on my web server. After web searching, and reading man pages, I get the impression that the following command is supposed to work:touch /home/mydomain/var/folder/attachments/`date +%H%M`.txtThis should give me a new file with a file name that is the current hour and minute.However, when executed, the CRON mailer reports:touch /home/mydomain/var/folder/attachments/`date +/bin/sh: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching /bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of fileSo, it looks like shell is seeing the plus (+) sign as an EOFObviously, nothing get created.What would be the easiest, single line command to create an empty file, at a given location, with a time based file name

boots fine if an external monitor is plugged in, otherwise the laptop screen just flashes white till it dies and reboots. lsmod says nouveau is loaded, however it lets me rmmod it as though its not in use. rmmod on the nvidia mod says it is in use. nvidia settings can change the resolution of the external monitor
used yum to install and built from scratch, both have the same result. reason i want to get rid of nouveau is because it detects my laptop resolution as larger than it is and even if i lower the resolution it still stretches it further than the boundries of the screen. without the nvidia driver my laptop display is recognised correctly aside from size issues.
Enabling the nvidia driver / etc / rc.d / init.d / functions line 526 1484 Segmentation fault "$@"
[FAILED]
^^ that appears during boot.

I just switched from a basic digital camera to a more advanced one that stores both Jpeg and Raw (.Nef - it's a Nikon) files for me.When importing files in Digikam, I rename the files so that they start with Date and Time. Example: 20110121-223748.JPG for a photo taken on Jan 21st 2011 at 22:37:48.I was a bit surprised when importing both the JPEG and the Raw version of the same photo, that the filename is different by a few seconds (no constant offset, sometimes they are the same):
20110121-223748.JPG
20110121-223750.NEF
I did some "research" by looking at the exif data of both files (using "exiftool 20110121-223748.JPG" from the command line). Here is what I got back
(amongst other data):20110121-223748.JPG
File Modification Date/Time : 2011:01:21 22:37:48+01:00
Modify Date : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
Date/Time Original : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
[code]....
So it seems that Digikam is using the "File Modification Date/Time" (different in the Jpeg's and Raw's of my camera) rather than the "Create Date" (the same for both Jpeg and Raw). (The few seconds difference in "File Modification Date/Time" between the two versions of the same photo is probably due to the time that my camera needs to write away the data on the SD memory card. I guess.) Is there a way to have Digikam use the Create Date? (Or the Date/Time Original?)
PS: I'm on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, using DigiKam 1.2.0

I would really like to preserve a file's original modified date and pass it back to the file as the same attribute after a script has worked on it. I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400
Passing that string as-is to date foo.jpg, I get the errordate: unknown option -- 0 and the usual semi-courteous suggestion to Try 'date --help' for more information.Somehow my TexInfo database got screwed up somewhere along the line and info dategives me the short article on date input formats, not the full documentation for the command

When I clall the "update manager" it tells me if my system is up-to-date or new updates are available. Lets assume I update my system now (I disabled automatic updates).
Then (in a couple of days or weeks) I start the Update Manager again and it tells me again that new updates available. How can I find out now when the last time was when my system was "up-to-date" (=when a complete, successful update took place)?
Is there soemwhere an entry which shows this date?

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.
echo $DISPLAY
<no output>
I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.

echo $DISPLAY to verify

xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"
I have commented out nolisten tcp as suggested HERE I have modified /etc/gdm/custom.conf as suggested HERE Actually, the last suggested modifying /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, but that file didn't exist, so I added the line: DisallowTCP=false to /etc/gdm/custom.conf I rebooted, and still I get: xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"

I'm testing HTML5 for the first time, using Firefox (beta) 4.0b8 and SeaMonkey (beta) 2.1b1, and its ignoring some CSS. Specifically, I have problems with the <details> tag. (It is nested in a paragraph...I am using it to provide an in-paragraph definition in hopes it can be toggled.)
Firefox only partly supports <details>. It's not supposed to show anything except the content of <summary>, unless you click on <summary>'s content. Instead, it puts a line break before the content of <details>, splitting the paragraph in two peices (which looks silly), without the "closed/open" functionality.
So I tried using "display:inline" in my CSS, but that gets ignored. Just for fun, I also tried "display:hidden" (also ignored) and "display:none" (obeyed).
SeaMonkey doesn't doesn't do anything special with the content of <display>...but it also ignores the same CSS as Firefox.
The only thing I can do to support semantic design is apply "font-style:italic" to all <details> elements.
Granted, you might ask, "why bother using <details> at all. then?" Well, I would like to have <details> for the browsers that support it, with the "font-style:italic" to degrade the page nicely for those that don't (such as for SeaMonkey).
Does anyone know why "display:inline" and "display:hidden" get ignored?
